Help! Sippy cups!

I'm going back to work in about a month, when my (ebf) baby will be about 7.5months. He used to have an occasional bottle of ebm but since 4 months he's been a bottle refuser. Which is fine- he can use a sippy cup. He didn't get on with a no-spill cup (again fine - I removed the valve). He's had a cup of water with food for about a month and I recently tried with milk.
I'm getting a bit nervous because he doesn't seem to get drinking from a cup - he's fine getting it to his mouth by himself and is also happy to open his mouth and let someone else do the work, but once the milk/ water is in his mouth he just spits it back out. He will swallow some, but I have to keep wrenching the cup away so he doesn't overflow! I've tried warm and cold water but only cold milk (it was a warm day Smile). Anyone got any advice or success stories please? Oh, I've also tried a doidy cup. He uses it to rinse his mouth out...

But he will drink from a sippy cup? So what's the problem?

He spits most of it out. Was wondering if it was normal?

Oh I see! Well, it's what mind does Smile my 7 month old can drink from a sippy cup, but lots comes out too. He gulps and guzzles and dribbles lots out. It takes them a while to get used to it, I wouldn't worry at all. It will be a while before he does it without getting water all over himself!

Mine was a bottle refuser from when we first introduced ebf at 3 1/2 months. At about 7.5/8 months we started introducing formula in a cup in advance of me going back to work. Like yours he'd take a little, spit a lot out and generally wouldn't get 'a feed' from it - even though he'll drink water well from sippy cups.

In the end, I caught him playing with a friend's bottle one day and decided to try a bottle again, having not offered one in more than 3 months. Suddenly he guzzled the formula from it! I'd say try again. Eventually he moved onto open cups/doidy cups but would only ever take water from sippy cups.

Thanks Smile. Luckily I'll be at work so won't have to clean up the mess!

Yup, pretty messy here at first as well but he got the hang of more of it going in eventually. DS2 liked the Doidy cup first, then the Nuk soft spout sippy "trainer cup" for milk and the Tommy Tippee non-spill for water. Though he is currently obsessed with drinking from an open cup all by himself, which is very messy.

Try the silicone sports bottles type.

Thanks everyone. It's interesting you were able to go back to bottles lorelei, I was thinking of giving them another shot. We have all different types of cups, but I think at the moment he's only interested in teething on the silicone teats!
