Calorie content of breast milk??

Does anybody know if the calorie content of breast milk changes depending on my diet. For example, if I've eaten a lot of cake, chocolate etc will my breast milk have more calories??

This article has some interesting stats about breastmilk, although it would seem that there is quite a wide variation in the samples taken.

I wouldn't worry about what you eat particularly - just eat a reasonably healthy diet with the odd bit of cake if you fancy it!

Thanks for posting this as I have recently cut back sugar in my diet as my sugar addiction was getting out of hand (4 creme eggs in one sitting)!

Since then my 12 week old has started to increase on feeds including during the night and I was not sure if the two were related or just a coincidental growth spurt!

Kellymom has some information on how your diet can affect your breastmilk - with the general message being that for the most part it doesn't make a difference to baby, only to you. This article has specific information about what affects the calorie content of milk - diet doesn't, but apparently the types of fats you eat does affect the types of fats in your breastmilk.
