Infant feeding

HV has confused me again - BF overnight now weaning

Its my own fault for getting my DH to take DD to be weighed today. I shouldn't let him out unattended!

DD is 7 months on Friday, almost on 3 meals a day and is still BF. The HV has said to DH that now she weighs 17'9 I should stop BF her overnight (she wakes every 3 hours currently, I alternate between rocking back to sleep and feeding) as if I carry on we'll have problems with obesity.

I thought that food was for fun until one and that milk would be her main source of nutrition still for a while yet. We don't force great quantities of food down her, she does tend to feed to sleep with milk at night but during the day she will settle with a cuddle and a rock.

Should I go for a second opinion with another HV (it wasn't my usual one who I trust and who understands my PFB tendancies- its also worth me mentioning I spent ages and ages getting to grips with BF and was very stubborn about getting it right for DD)

Do you have any experiences to share- should I carry on as I am?

Carry on as you are! That advice sounds bizarre. I've never heard about night feeds causing obesity! And yes, at 7 months old milk should be her main source of nutrition, she'll gradually ramp up on the solids over the course of the next few months.

Carry on as you are. I'd like to see anyone tell my not-yet-6mo 20lber he couldn't feed at night.

FWIW there does seem to be a tiny, tiny link with lots of overnight ff or cows' milk, but not with bf, which appears to protect against obesity if anything.

My DS fed at least once, sometimes several times overnight till 11 months. He remains on the 50th centile so it has not made him obese. Often he just needed a comfort boobie to get back to sleep, especially when he had teething pain.I expect your HV has not had much up to date training in breastfeeding, this is a common problem.

I knew it. It sounded completely wrong (I don't think its my DH's retelling either) I certainly won't be getting her weighed again for a while. There's something about HV's being determined to make you feel like you're doing everything wrong no matter what you do.

Thank you- I've now got to phrase it correctly when I get home to make sure that he doesn't think I disbelieve him!
