Infant feeding

cup question......

My little boy Joey was exclusively BF till he was 8 months old, then i switched him to formula from a bottle. I'm now trying to move him onto a cup given that he's 11 months old, with not much luck! I've tried a Doidy cup and an ordinary plastic beaker which he just cheerfully flings everywhere, and i've tried various cups with teats (hard and soft) which he just chews and gets frustrated with! Any tips? (incidentally, he was like this at first with bottles. It cost me a small fortune to finally find one that he would drink from!) Thanks, NM x

Have you tried the once with the sports cap instead?

Hi Nervousmum.

We had a child at nursery who was the exact same. Loved the bottle but wouldn't give it up! All we did was persevere with it and encourage him to drink from the beaker rather than the bottle. We demonstrated how to use the beaker, looked brill I can tell you! I'm all for demonstration because young children like to imitate adults. Eventually after what seemed like ages, he finally gave in and started using the beaker, coming off the bottle completely.

I think you just have to be patient and keep trying to offer him/her the beaker. Or try when he/she is particularly thirsty/hungry. A hungry/thirsty child will eat/drink! Good luck!

Thanks for the tips. I'll try a sports cap, and lots of perseverence!

Hello,

You could try a sippy cup with a soft chewy spout. I found one by Fisher Price in Babys R'Us which my dd will drink from, she also drinks from 'Kids on the Go' ones too which have harder spouts but she likes the shape. I am a pretty good authority as I have bought every cup teat and bottle on the market. Alternatively, he will get the hang of the doidy cup eventually but prepare yourself to get wet! I have seen another sort of doidy-esque cup with different attachments in Boots where it has several different lids (inc a sippy spout, cup rim and also a cup rim with a couple of holes in so not too much liquid comes out when its tipped upside down or knocked gleefully on the floor) you could try that. Good luck

avent have a non spill cup that has a soft teat a bit like a bottle but flattened. it was the only one my dd could figure out for ages.

ok suzysooz and nervousmum, hijack here, but you sound like the ones to ask:

my ds3 is 7 months and has enthusiastically taken to feeding on solids and mushys (spoon and finger foods) but he wont take a bottle, nor will he drink from a cup. ive tried a bunch of brands of both but he just gets agitated with all of them and never really has a drink from anywhere but my breast - even when hes at home and im out all day, im told he has had 'a tiny bit' from a bottle but no more and hes dying for a drink by the time i see him.

stupid thing is, i should know what to do by now - hes my 3rd breastfed baby in 3 years but i simply cant remember what i did to get the other two to switch from breast to bottle (or even just to be able to do both)

any ideas??

TIA by the way

I had the same thing, other friends babies were apparently guzzling from beakers at about 6mths but mine just screamed and screamed.

Eventually won out with a BabyBFree bottle-to-cup trainer, at about 9mths. It involved a lot of screaming, wedging it into his reluctant mouth while pinning arms at sides. I used that horrendously expensive ready mixed baby juice to start with. He would sip from a Doidy cup too but too much hard work - had to hold it in a vice like grip to prevent it being thrown.

I have a cupboard full of rejected beakers - was thinking of ebaying them all together as a "try your luck" kit.

He's finally got the hang of valve sippy cups at nearly 1yr (Boots seems to suit best) but still doesn't seem to get much liquid out. And still needs help to hold it, but I guess it's not the end of the world! Sigh.

Nappiesgalore - i have a whole cupboard full of unused bottles! I tried just about every one on the market and still Joey wouldn't switch from breast! In the end, we bought a NUK bottle out of sheer desparation and amazingly he took to it. He would only drink about 100mls a day from it at the start, then we went on a fortnight's holiday to Greece and it was so hot, he was happily guzzling all his fluids from the bottles (which was better for me too, so i could keep a more accurate measure of his intake in the heat!), at which point i gave up BF altogether. He was 8 months old at this point. It did take a lot of perseverance though, and it looks like it's going to be just as much of a struggle to get him onto cups! HTH. NM x

have just talked with dp about it andhe says hes tried that one on him. he also says that he (sd3) can drink from a bottle of whatever description, he just wont. he certainly bloody wont from me, anyway!

i guess ill just keep trying.

I had this problem with DS1 - also have the cupboard full of all sorts of beaker. He didn't seem to get anywhere with valve beakers as he never sucked hard enough to get any out.

The only ones he got anywhere with were the cheapest sort that have two handles and a screw on lid with a molded mouthpiece - I think I got them in a local chemists'.

Anyway, I do remember it being a nightmare and for months after I stopped BF I think his only milk was on his cereal (he wouldn't take bottles either). So good luck to you all!

aha!

last night dp gave ds3 TWO bottle feeds (much much quicker than middle-of-the-night breastfeeds) and by 4.30am, when he did finally feed from me, i was 'well stocked' and he was nice and peaceful (grateful)about it so i just latched him on and went back to sleep. marvellous.
and that was from the normal bottles the other two use (i know i know, they shouldnt be on bottles anymore, but what the hey. at 2 and 3, they are able to drink from cups and straws and what-not (and ds1 has to at preschool), they just like bottles for comfort so i dont begrudge it them.

Looking after a 5m BF baby who has a NUK trainer bottle and a Nuby Soft spout beaker and will use either, she was on a daily EBM/formula NUK bottle but refused it 3 weeks ago and will use these.

Tried the doidy cup today, soso result.
