my dd (7 wks old) has nearly always brought up some of her feed, either soon after or a while after when lying in her cot.have been told by health visitor not to worry as she's putting on weight very well. But dd somethimes seems disressed by it so want to find a way to stop or reduce it. Have hard that using a cot wedge to raise her head and chest slightly is a good idea to help stop this. Anyone else had the same problem and used cot wedge?

Sounds as if she could have a slight reflux, dd had it too. Have heard of cot wedges but not seen one. Try some thick books under the feet at the head end of her cot to elevate it or rolled sheets /towels under a pram or crib mattress. Don't lie her flat, to sleep or change, until at least half an hour after a feed and sit her in a bouncy chair or car seat rather than lie her on the floor.

My Little one used to be sick every time she was fed too for weeks i changed her milk and she stopped straight away i later found out many little ones don't take too well to the fish oils they put in formula nowdays i put her on Cow & Gate Organic which is the only one on the market without it.

Also you can get a wedge from www.JoJomamanbebe.co.uk for £16.99

my ds is sick after every feed also but he doesn't seem to be bothered by it - likes making a mess I think. :)

I hate it during the night though as he falls asleep straight after/during his feed and he ends up being sick a while later in his crib. Not only is it messy (he ends up sleeping with a wet patch under his head and sick down his cheek/in his ear) but I'm worried he'll choke on it. I'm not sure a wedge would help though as during the day he's sick when sitting up so it's definately not the lying down that does it... Any other suggestions? Will he grow out of it? (he's 5 wks)

Sorry to steal your thread, Bugley

hi my ds was like this - sick all day long after feeds whether he was sitting up or lying down -.... it wasnt until he started on solids that his sickness started to slow down .. and then we just had the occasional violent sick! He was diagnosed with a floppy larynx which meant that his milk etc just didnt stay down ... it resolved itself as his larynx became stronger as he got older. He is completely fine now! They will probably grow out of it with time.

It is quite common for newborns to be sicky and possett. The valve at the top of their stomach may not be mature enough to hold the tummy contents in. Feeding little and more often helps as then they don't get as full, so can keeping them upright but a 5 week old would probably still not really "sit" well enough to make a big difference but he may well just suddenly grow out of it. If it is more than a bit of possetting , so being very sick , with some force behind it and not just the result of wind or hiccupping, and he is unhappy with it, it is worth asking about reflux and even a condition called pyloric stenosis.

thanks for that.. he doesn't seem too bothered by it so I guess we'll just hope he grows out of it and just keep plenty muslins about in the meantime

My ds also was a very sicky baby. He would projectile vomit what looked like a full feed at times which was quite scary. Midwives and hv s all assured me it would settle once he started solids and sure enough he's very rarely sick now. Agree with the keeping upright after feeds theory. My sil in Australia used to buy a thicker formula before her lo startd solids and that helped a lot. Not sure if you can buy it over here though. Someone suggested you can get it prescribed by your gp?

I too have a sicky baby (ds 14 wks) and I'm thinking he might have a bit of reflux - he is often fussy at the boob and then sicks up.
Strangely he doesn't really do any sickies at night in his cot only during the day. He does have many unsettled nights where it is difficult to settle his in in cot though and he wakes frequently wanting to suck and I wonder whether he is having some heartburn pain.

I am also beginning to think that the sicking up might be a way of him coping with anxieties - his gran and uncle are staying at the moment so the house is a lot nosier and he has been markedly sickier during the last few days.

I was interested about the comments re solids as I thought reflux babies benefited from delaying weening as long as poss.

i always thought babies with reflux benefitted from early weaning - as early as 10 weeks according to some HVs i think.

the HV thinks my 9 day old ds has a floppy larynx. he's not very sicky at all though. is the general thing that if you have a floppy larynx you are sicky cos in that case HV could be wrong. he doesn't feed well at all though - will only have dribs and drabs - often falls asleep before he has had anywhere near enough and he seems to be sucking well and taking in a lot of milk and then when you look he's had about an ounce in half an hour or something ridiculous!

also what is this reflux? is it the same as floppy larynx?

he also arches his back, bends his legs, has hiccups a lot and doesn't bring his wind up. don't know if any of this is connected.

hi bugley and bamboozleslover-my dd2 6 wk old has same symptons doesnt like lying flat and sometimes is projectile sick. she has hiccups a lot as well. i was prescribed gaviscon infant for her and zantac(ranititidine) but after using zantac for a couple of days she was sick projectile for 2 feeds running.

so they have taken her off that and she has been given domperidone i havent started it yet. but i hope it helps. i was also wondering how to elevate the cot. as she has been sleeping upright in her bouncy chair for the last week. she seems more settled.

as in her cot she just waves her arms and legs around all night and constantly spits her dummy out.

she has been diagnosed with reflux. the paed also mentioned that when you burp a reflux baby you should put their tummy on your shoulder and burp her as if you hold her chest to your shoulder the acid stays in their stomach burning their throat and making feeding painfull for them.

We elevated the moses basket by putting books under the head end when sat on a chest of drawers or placing it in a cot which was supported on Ikea footstools at the head end. Similarly when she moved to the cot itself. You can also buy wedges to place under the mattress or use rolled up towels or blankets. At one point we made a pocket for dd to sleep in out of a cot sheet and safety pinned to the underside of the mattress to stop her slipping down the slope ! If you have a pushchair with an adjustable inclined backrest you could use that during the day or some carrycots used to have a back support within them.
