Wind - Help

Dd is totally breastfed and for the past 3 weeks has been waking up at 5am with trapped wind and trumps for Scotland! She is 16 weeks old. Took her to GP who said it is still colic and nothing more sinister. She also has reflux. But for the last few nights she has woken every hour or so screaming with what appears to be wind (drawing knees to chest etc) HV says it could be hunger?? and suggests giving formula last thing at night.
Have tried gripewater and Infacol ( Infacol improves it a wee bit but not much).

Any ideas please?

Others here will be able to give good advice but I do know that giving formula is definetely not going to help. I'm sorry but what crxp advice from your hv!! How is it meant to help? If anything it would make it worse. imo i would go with what your gp said but i'm sure you can get good advice from others here.

sympathies Lea, DS2 is the same and i give him gripe water with every blooming feed now - half way thru, it seems to help. My friend swears by a teaspoon full of cooled boiled water about 5 mins before a feed so that might be worth a try - don't quite know why it should work though!
Have you got infant gaviscon for the reflux? I know it sounds daft but you're not shaking it before giving it are you? Its tempting I know, cos the blooming thing takes so long to dissolve but with DS2, he gets dreadful wind from it when I do that
Lots of luck

On a different thread someone suggested trying the probiotic drinks. I started taking one a day a couple of weeks ago (Danone Actimel), and DDs colic has improved, but I couldn't swear that it was because of that and not that she's just growing out of it. She's 13 weeks.

Could be worth a try?

They can still get terrible wind with formula (have windy formula fed 9 week old here) so I can't see how that's going to change it. What crap advice from your hv - but why does that not surprise me? A GP I met in Sainsbury's (mistook him for an employee, should have noticed the lack of uniform and the cufflinks, duh!)recommended Dentinox for colic. I bought it but keep forgetting to use it so can't say if it's any good. Sympathy, sounds horrible.

how weird lydiamum. i started drinking them as were on offer on tescos and my dd seems alot more settled in the evening. never put the two together before. could be coincidence i suppose. excuse onehanded typing.

hercules, LOL, only took up the suggestion on the thread because of the tescos offer

Sainsburys are doing 2 8-packs for £3 at the moment.

Also try sugared water to settle her stomach. My ds had terrible wind every night too, then I stopped drinking orange juice and tried to avoid any kind of citrus fruits, that seemed to work and he's much better now. He still pumps rather than burps, but it doesn't give him as much pain at it used to. Oh, and last thing at night before you put her down, massage her tummy by moving your hand in a circular motion clockwise to try and disperse any trapped wind bubbles.

Fennel tea might help - either you drink it if bfeeding or feed a little to the baby from a spoon or bottle.

Hi folks

I am glad but embarassed to say that I think the problem may have been solved.

Last week I began putting dd into a sleeping bag at night and thought nothing of it. I had a flash of inspiration last night when she started kicking and putting her knees to her chest and took her out of the sleeping bag and put sheets back on the bed. This is only one night but she then slept until 4.30am. I can only think she needs more leg room to ease the wind out!

Will keep you posted.

Hi
Just to let you know we are still no better off, apart from one night I have not slept for more than 2 hours at a time due to this wind pain. I am at my wits end but hopefully it will get better soon?

Have tried cranial osteopathy, Actimel drink, avoiding citrus, chocolate and dairy products.

Babies draw the knees to their chest when in any form of distress - that's the way they cry hard. I suppose the farting is a clue it might be wind.....what happens when you simply feed her, and/or bring her in with you, when she cries like this?

Lea is she on any meds for the reflux at all?
