Hurray - mass breastfeeding in cafe in Wakefield

just been on Look North (local news) over 20 women breastfed in a cafe in Wakefield and were given free cups of tea. Other cafes in West Yorks have also opened their doors for breastfeeding mums.

There was something in the TImes this weekend re cafes and breastfeeding mums but I think it was more of a support group rather than an actual cafe IYSWIM. Will see if I can find a link.

I find the idea of mass breastfeeding very bizarre

Bizarre, maybe, but a good way to publicise (sp?) especially in W Yorks, whre B/F rates are one of the lowest in the country.
I remember trying to feed DD in a cafe, feeling like an alien.

completely agree that more should be done to get the rates up, but I don't believe that twenty babies/toddlers needed feeding at the same time, and therefore goes against the arguement of necessity.

I read this as "HURRY - mass breastfeeding in cafe in Wakefield". Had visions of lactating ladies with latched on babies stampeding towards a greasy spoon.
Sigh, must get sight checked.

I honestly can't imagine feeding my child in a cafe just to raise awareness, have fed in cafes many times and hopefully I did my bit but can't bear the thought of just doing it for publicity.

not read whole thread but it is breast feeding awareness week and there is a huge public breast feed scheduled in many places on saturday at 1pm...

Not all the babies were feeding at the same time when shown on TV. Some were feeding, some were asleep, some were looking around. The opinions of the non breast feeding customers were all very positive too.

It is breast feeding awareness week, hence the publicity of this and the free drinks for breast feeding mums.

There was a big big publicity thing in \link{http://www.mumsonline.net/forums/links.php?url=news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4972236.stm\The Phillipines} last month. To raise awareness and to break the world record. I did post about it on MN but no one seemed interested!

see now i don't mind that, just the thought of mums desperately trying to get their babies to feed for the cameras made me wince a bit
