Infant feeding

People who BF toddlers, tell me about your body shape/weight/hunger...

Have you found that you lost weight, gained weight, hung onto fat as you continued to nurse past the first year? How's your hunger?

I was ravenous when BF permanently-sucking and screaming,mnon-sleeping reflux baby DS, but didn't shift the weight I'd put on during pregnancy until he was almost a year old, then I suddenly went down three dress sizes despite eating big portions. DS is now 2.2 and still BF morning noon and night, I still eat largish portions of healthy food, and now have fat tummy and top of thighs although the rest of me is slimmish.

BF medical friend told me the body hangs onto fat stores in abdominal and thigh area to make milk and I will likely change shape again after weaning. Is she right? How's BF your toddler affecting your body?

Sameish thing is happening here actually. I spent the first 6 months on the sofa bfing and shovelling down cake, I got back to prepregnancy weight when DD turned one but was a couple of stones overweight to begin with.
DD is 18 months now and the weight is falling off me, it's bizarre, as I'm still eating like a horse although running around after a toddler I suppose. Long may it continue!
My tummy is pretty flabby although I fear it's been ruined for good! And fat thighs but they always have been really.

Lost weight really quickly with both, in fact I was back into my usual clothes within a few weeks and with DC1 I literally couldn't eat enough to keep my weight on. One I stopped feeding dc2 I started putting weight on, but I think that was more to do with the fact that I was still eating the same calories but they were no longer being burned off by a manic toddler Grin

The recommendations are to feed your chikdren to a minimum of 2 years. You may find it weird but I find it weird when people can't type using proper words Grin

Pureed Fortunately I don't give a shiny shit what you find bizarre and weird but feel free to start a thread about what you find bizarre and weird instead of trying to derail this one.
HTH

Everyone else, thanks for responses. Would prefer not to derail this so not getting into it with ^^ person.

I was the same as JJJ with DC1, weight fell off me within weeks, by the time DS1 was a year I was easily a stone less than pre-pregnancy. I never did wean completely though, DS2 8wks is feeding and at 2.5y DS1 still has one feed a day usually. WRT body shape I lost the stomach but never the thighs which is where I tend to hold it anyway.

I find it odd that someone can spell bizarre but not would or you Smile

Smile at Pascha and congratulations Thanks. I'm a similar weight to per pregnancy but definitely a different shape.

It does make sense that your body would hang onto fat stores if possible, to continue making milk. I will be interested to see what happens when Ds weans, whether I get bigger or smaller round tummy and thigh area!

It does make sense I agree. You may stand a better chance of slimming down when he weans if you eat less calories unlike greedy me Grin

Sorry posted too soon. There are people of all shapes and sizes amongst my pals who have or are nursing toddlers fwiw. I think your friends theory is quite logical though.

Yes of course it depends on just how much cake you continue to eat, I found the insatiable appetite did die down after about 9-10 months though. I imagine eating a normal healthy diet will mean after a few months you are back at whatever shape and size is normal for you.

I bf all three of mine until around two, (am still going with 20 month old #3), and have a fat belly. But, I am massively tired, eat too many biscuits for the sugar rush, and don't exercise. When I sensibly restricted my calories a while back, I lost a stone very easily. Still had a fat belly though!

I was wondering this too, I'm still having trouble with BFing at 4 months (also a refuxer!) but weight is falling off so fast I'm starting to worry I won't have the stores I need to make milk! Baby is gaining well though! Grin

Grin @ shiny shit!

Yeah you will Sleepybunny, you would have to be nutritionally in famine mode to not make enough milk.

Agree with pascha what you eat and drink will have very little effect on your milk, have a look here.

If your Lo is showing signs of reflux, is gaining weight and you are loosing weight fast it sounds just like my DS. It turned out to be tongue tie and upper lip tie. Have a read of this on tongue tie and see what you think Smile.

I found that the weight just fell off until dd was about 8 months and then crept back on a bit as she started properly on food. She's now 18 months and I'm about half a dress size bigger than usual overall, with a bit extra around the middle and thighs.
