Infant feeding

difference between stage 1 and follow on milk?

DC (7 months) is pretty much ebf but will take a bottle on the very rare occasion we have to leave her with MIL. Initially I left her with ebm but have used the odd carton of stage 1 milk.

I recently bought the hipp organic stage 2 powdered milk box and looked at the ingredients and nutritional info, comparing them to s1 carton and couldn't see much difference.

Am now a bit confused as to what I should be giving her. She had very little in the way of solids so far so not sure if I should still be using stage 1.

Or am I just over thinking this and are the separate 'stages' just a marketing ploy so formula can be aggressively marketed by the formula companies to infants over 6 months? Wink

I think your last paragraph pretty much sums it up. I just used stage 1 until 12 months then went onto cows milk - I do supplement with vitamin D though now no longer on formula

As above, there is no real difference. Some claim to have more iron etc but babies cant absorb most of it. It's perfectly find to give your baby stage 1 milk all the way through along with a healthy diet Smile

Also, the NHS don't recommend follow on milks at all. They recommend first stage till 12 months.

Stage 2 is not normally 'follow on' milk.

Stage 2 is less-modified milk - protein is less altered. Otherwise the same as stage 1. It is marketed for babies from newborn as well, like Stage 1.

Follow on is higher in iron and less modified, for babies over 6 mths.

You could call the helplines on the formula pack and get more info on this.

Stage 1 is suitable no matter how old the baby.
