Infant feeding

Should i be worried? 5wo FF DS not pooed for over 24 hours...

I am formula feeding my 5wo DS with Aptimil first milk.

Until yesterday, he has been doing one or two big soft yellow poos (like english mustard) per day.

It has now been over 24 hours since he has pooed and I am worried that he might be constipated. He also seems fretful, uncomfortable and unhappy, and keeps straining - his face goes bright red - only for a couple of little farts to come out.

How long is 'normal' for a FF newborn to go between poos? Do I need to talk to my GP/health visitor about this?

There is no normal but I wouldn't be worried after 1 day some go only 2-3 times a week and that's fine for them

It is normal. Maybe if he's a little uncomfortable some baby massage might help relax him
And mOve things along.

I always say this, and it always works....cycle your dss legs to get his bowls moving.

Because he's not mobile, things can stay put, so a gentle cycling of the legs should help.

No, not worrying time yet, try the cycling, always worked for my DD, and the tummy massage, 3 days is how long i would go before mentioning to someone.

Try a bath too.

DD2 is 8 weeks and she goes once a day, sometimes once every two.

The midwife told me that they don't worry unless its been 4 days. We've just done three days and the result was not pleasant when it finally came Grin good luck

It is normal but you know your baby best, my DD gets in a lot of pain if she doesn't poo for 24 hours and gets quite constipated so if you are worries just pop down to see the doctor (I have found that sometimes when they feel DDs tummy to check for blockages that seems to get things moving too!!!) I give DD an oz or two of water but I can't remember when we started this possible 7 weeks HTH

Thanks guys - spent a good 30 mins rubbing his tummy this evening (15 seconds rubbing down in a straight line from rib cage to nappy, 15 seconds holding his knees bent up to his tummy, 15 seconds rubbing tummy in clockwise circles....and repeat for ages! Got this pattern off an american forum website)....and it worked! 2 spectacularly unpleasant poos within an hour!

Looks like I was worried for nothing. Although he has been colickly and grizzly after his bottle this evening and now is refusing to go to sleep.

If it's not one thing, it's another, right??

Glad to hear that :)

DD2 was teething at 6weeks. She now gets sore gums on and off. Then she got a cold. And is now sore from her jabs.

Always something!
