Infant feeding

How do you make a bottle in middle of night. I mean what do you actually do, not what you should do

All that boiling the kettle and letting it cool malarkey no good at 3am. What do you really do in middle of night? Straight from fridge? Thermos by bed? Ready made? Am mix feeding newborn and never really cracked this with dd so want a better middle of the night system for ds.

I used cartons! Grin

We made up the night time bottles in advance before going to bed, using water above 70 degrees to kill bacteria in formula, cooled quickly in bowl of cold/iced water, put in fridge and then quickly heated when required.

Pre make night time bottles like pp then leave in the fridge, and then slap my wrists pop in the microwave (minus teat) for 30 seconds, dd prefered room temp milk whereas ds liked his heated for 45 seconds.....

Another carton fan here.

Cartons, but then I use them for daytime feeds too.

We used the microwave too after a while, we never heated them that much and shook them well

I do the same as cathpip. I give the bottle a good shake before feeding.

we keep bottles in the fridge with 4.5 fl oz of cooled boiled water in them. And keep pots of powder with 7 scoops in made up. Then, just boil kettle when you need to and top up bottle with boiling water up to the 7oz and chuck in pot. Voila! You just need to adjust the cooled amount to whatever fl oz you are wanting to make up.

Linda's Day and Night Feeder - didn't even have to get out of bed!

I had a Fridge to Go. It's a very efficient cool bag which (the larger ones) keeps ready made bottles properly cold for 8 hours. I'd warm them up on the bathroom tap as required, although did toy with the idea of getting a cheap microwave for the baby's room. I made up a day's worth of bottles at once, and just took one or two to bed with me in the Fridge to Go. Also brilliant for days out.

I did what the tins said at the time - took bottles of boiled water up to bed and just put powder in as needed in the cool water. Didn't heat up, sterilise the powder nuffin, oh no.

I think from what I remember last time, though I din't really remember much, that I took boiled water up in sterilised bottles and then added powder from a box I kept by the bed. So sometimes dd had it warm and sometimes cold depending on when she woke. How long until the water would go rancid though, if I boiled it 10am and, say, he didn't need it until 5am?

Your not supposed to do that at all now. The powder can have bugs not the water so the water needs to be hot.

If my dc due in feb won't bf I'm ginkgo buy the big litre bottles of formula for nights.

We filled sterilised bottles with freshly boiled water as we went to bed. When ds woke tipped pre-measured milk powder into bottle (used the avent tubs made for when out and about) then popped bottle into electric bottle warmer for a couple of minutes whilst changing nappy. We didn't even leave the bed until he went into his own room. As long as bottles with water in are closed tight it shouldn't be a problem.

Pre made a small batch with just boiled water and flash cooled in iced water and then stuck in fridge. Microwaved them till Luke warm and swirled vigorously when needed.

Not ideal no. But sanity saving.

Thermos with water at correct temperature, empty bottle, measured formula in container, jug half filled with cold water.
Baby wakes - make up feed and leave to cool in jug, change baby's nappy, feed is cooled by the time this is finished.
Happy days!

Pickled do you think it's better to make up first and leave in fridge then than to make with cold water?

a mixture of cartons (microwave to warm, good shake)
and
thermos of boiling water, measure out 4 oz, add 7scoops of powder (pre measured) shake, add 3oz cooled boiled kept in bottle in coolbag/fridge. sgake

Important that water is over 70 degrees when powder is added.

Report
Fairylea · 08/01/2013 20:06

The most crucial point is the water has to be just boiled or around 70 degs when the powder is put in to kill the bacteria in the powder. You're not boiling the water to sterilise the water, you're doing it to get it hot enough to kill the bacteria in the powder.

Making a bottle fresh is best. Making a small batch and cooling and then putting in the fridge is second.

No one should be making bottles by adding powder to Luke warm water or water that has been left beyond 30 minutes. That is the most dangerous way to make them.

Yes it's better to make up flash cool & store in back of fridge until needed.

Ok in the day but this is why I used a carton at night!

Especially when they are very tiny.

It's worse to use standing water as it won't kill any bugs presumably its no good as soon as it cools - it's a there may be bugs in the powder which isn't sterile not an issue with water.

It's not the water which is the issue, it's the powder. That's why it's safer to make up in advance than make up with cool boiled water.

Took bottle of previously made formula out of fridge.
Shook it
Microwaved it for the correct time*
Shook it again
Checked it on back of hand
Fed DD1

I'm a scientist by training so I do confess to checking the temp of room temp and fridge temp bottles with a thermometer.

I therefore, new how long to MW milk out of fridge or powered scooped into cooled boiled water.

You aren't allowed to put powder into cooled boiled water any more, tiny risk of some sort of food poisoning as powder isn't sterile.
