Complained about GP who said my daughter shouldn't be breastfeeding

I went to see the GP about my own health and she nodded towards my 2 year old daughter and said "are you still breastfeeding her?"

I said "Yes".

She shook her head and said "You shouldn't be breastfeedng her; children need lots of good foods". Then told me what she should be eating.

I explained that she eats plenty of nutritious foods.

Then I complained to the practice manager. I said I didn't wish to sound disrespectful but as an ABM Mother Supporter and trainee breastfeeding counsellor and a qualidied nutritionist and complementary therapist specializing in pregnancy, birth and children's health, I did not need or appreciate being given nutritional advice or being told that I shouldn't breastfeed and that breastfeeding her was not stopping her from eating good foods and that breast milk itself is a good food. My daughter was getting over an awful virus and breaastmilk contains antibodies to help her deal with that.

I said I was concerned that WHO recommend feeding for up to 2 years or beyond and she was saying that what I was doing was wrong.

The practice manager spoke to the GP and she said the GP was just concerned for my health in case it made me tired but thats not what the GP was saying

Well done you for making your valid points so clearly, what an idiot of a GP!
FWIW all the GP's I've mentioned to that I was still breastfeeding dd at two and older didn't bat an eyelid.

Superb!!! Nice to see that you have not allowed this GP to intimidate you. Too many of them have a "God" complex (in my experience), and feel there word is the spoken truth. My Gp told me my (entirely breastfed) 8week old baby was looking obese!?!?!?!?!? Lukily my husband was there to hold me back while my fantastic health visitor made the GP look as stupid as his comment!

Hi ckmum, good for you I myself am traing and I am also a nurse. That GP should be ashamed of themselves. Bf is the best gift any mother can give to her child I am too an avid breast feeder and would have felt exactly same, well done!

what a stupid gp you seem to have landed with ck!! sounds alot like my gp unfortunately who said that he didnt mind me bf in his surgery as long as the baby only took about 3 mins which is how long i had left for my appt!! he then asked me to leave the surgery because my baby was crying for the remainder of her feed! stupidity is a must-have quality in the gp's surgery that i go to!! i ended up having to feed my poor 6wk old dd in the back of our car before driving home!! she didnt mind but everyone coming out of the gp's got an eyeful of my booby!! haha
