All four of mine were slow to get started and all natural delivery with gas and air so they were not sleepy due to medication. They just wanted to sleep ! As long as temperature ok and you keep offering and doing skin to skin I would try not to worry and just follow his lead as will prob start to feed more over next few days???? Check with lactation specialist though x

What the others have said smile Double check no jaundice as well. I had to express some colostrum and syringe feed a couple of times to rouse her to latch on.

Congrats smile

I had this problem with mine when he was born a month ago too.... I stripped him down and changed his nappy before a feed and then blew on him, tickled his feet, (gently!) pinched his chubby bits to keep him awake, anything to stimulate him...my midwife showed me all this and also pointed out that I did the natural mummy thing of stroking him while he was feeding which soothes and sent him off to sleep! Hth and good luck... Your newborn will soon be more wakeful I promise! <passes out from exhaustion>....wink

Take him to bed with you, strip him naked and put him by your breast skin to skin so he has access to the nipple. If you google Biological Nurturing you could try putting him tummy to tummy.

Trying to breast feed my newborn. He has taken some but is sleepy and hard to wake to open wide enough to latch on. I know he needs fed every couple of hours to stimulate milk and for him to get hang of it. Memories of same thing happening with DS1 and he got the hang eventually. Just want another wet nappy to reassure that he's getting enough. When to worry and any tips for getting him to open wide? Thank you.
