Dd is 23 months. Finally made decision to stop breastfeeding two days ago. She was only feeding a couple of times a day and is now old enough to understand 'being a big girl and not having mummy milk anymore'.

Just been to the doctors because one boob is incredibly painful and I was starting to feel a bit feeverish. Doctor was brilliant and has prescribed penicillin and painkillers.

However, I am confused as to whether I should be expressing to ease the engorgement. Everything about mastitis seems to be about breastfeeding in the early days i.e. keep feeding or expressing throughout to drain boob. I am not feeding because the whole point is that we are stopping breastfeeding but am in so much pain. Should i just hand express a little to take the edge off?

Please help and thanks.

i had mastitis with my 2nd it was soo painful =[ and it lasted aaaages =[ maybe as your no longer feeding you need to 'teach' your body not to make as much milk? so maybe express but only express a small amount from each breast and gradually decrease the amount? not sure if this is right though
