Infant feeding

Progress milk any good

My 9 month old is weaning well.
He still has in excess of 20 ozs of milk (SMA blue) but he'll eat whatever he's given, milk or food, rather than not have as much milk and thus let me judge when to lower it. I have taken a bottle away and he now has about 20 ozs but is still sick sometimes. He had reflux when he was first born and so i'm a bit paranoid about it.

Does anyone recommend the progress milk, it has more nutrients so they need less apparently.

(please don't comment about breast feeding, i had an upsetting time when he was first born and i'm only now getting over it all.)

thanks

From personal experience I don't recommend it as it gave my dd awful stomach ache. It can contain too much iron for many babies.

Dd cut down drastically on her milk intake around this age. I think she was only having around 12-18 oz per day plus a bit extra in her weetabix/porridge.

By the time she was 12 months I switched to cows milk and she was having a maximum of 12 oz per day plus cereal.

Most people on here don't seem to use it, but I did. After ds was a year I still used it half and half with cow's milk until he was about 18 months so that he could have the extra nutrients a little longer. He tolerated it just fine and is a very healthy little boy. It's impossible to say how much it improved his health, but I'm glad I did it.

i would stich to what you are giving, dont see the need to change, to be honest think its more about advetising, and if your baby is settled on the Sma then i would just contib=nue until you can give cows milk

JakesMum, tbh if he had reflux you might be better keeping him on a "first" milk rather than going on to Progress. These follow-on milks are largely a marketing ploy: it is permitted to advertise them, whereas you can't adverise formula for babies under 6 months. Otherwise it is unlikely that they would have been invented. Also they do contain more iron but ordinary formula contains enough and some babies find the extra iron constipating. I think it might work out a bit cheaper than SMA blue?

Progress is a follow-on milk which in itself is a marketing gimmick. It may contain relatively more nutrients per fl oz but whether that is in as readily digestible format as solids, such as an iron fortified cereal with infant formula milk, is questionable. tbh I would go on as you are rather than risk it now and try cow's milk at a year-ish.

my sil moved her ds on to sma progress at 5 months (at hv's reccommendation) as he wasn't keeping anything down and wasn't putting on weight. he was far happier with it and is growing well now. I also use i for my ds and he's happy. :)
