Hi

When my DD feeds (BF) she only does about 2 sets of the deep gulps with the jaw opening reaaly wide. Te rest of the time its her tongue/lower jaw shaking - is this part of the feeding? I cant tell if shes swallowing or not?

Thanks

Lucy

Hi Lucy
In my experience yes but I guess every baby is different. My dd (14 weeks) only seems to gulp for a very small part of her feed & then seems to make that jaw shaking movement!

look at the bones just in front of her ears -are they and her ear tips moving ? You may see or hear her swallow from time to time.

The milk comes out pretty slowly most of the time but in the middle of a feed it flows really well, like a tap, which would possibly explain her big gulps.

The rest of the time it's coming in little bits and this sucking she does is just as important because it stimulates milk production and is part of the special communication between you and the baby about how much and what sort you should be producing.

It never ceases to amaze me. Great stuff! Smile

As long as you have wet nappies milk must be going in!

Thanks everyone

You're right, we do have wet and dirty nappies but because my DD feeds so frequently I was trying to suss out if she was actually eating or just there for comfort!
