Constipation in bottle fed babies

Pootle1 · 16/03/2006 21:22

I have recently switched from breast-feeding to bottle feeding and have found that one of my twins now suffers from constipation. I have watered the formula down slightly but wondered if anyone has any other tips.

Thanks in advance,

which formula are you using? sma always made ds very constipated.
farleys and aptimil made him sick!
finally found cow and gate organic was the one he tolerated best

short term though, try giving him/her extra water in between feeds

Hi Pootle1

My friend bottle-fed her daughter and swears by putting a small bit (1/2 teaspooon) of brown sugar in the bottle when her DD was constipated.

Was a bit of 'old-school' advice that she tried after trying everything else and it worked!

Good Luck

Agree with SL - ds1 struggled a bit on SMA but was better on Cow and Gate. Used Cow and Gate for ds2 and ds3 with no problems. Although not sure it was the SMA as ds1 still has a tendency to be constipated sometimes (although not for ages now) even though he eats loads of fruit.

I used to put a drop (literally) of orange juice in his water and that helped when he was really upset.

Thanks for the advice. As they were pre-term (35 weeks) they are prescribed with Nutriprem 2 from Cow & Gate. My GP suggested brown sugar and to water down feeds. I will try the sugar and introduce extra water in between feeds.

Leonsmum, do you know if the brown sugar was granulated or raw cane suger? Or does it not matter?

Thanks,

Hi there,

Just to let you know that with watering the formula down and by adding a small amount of brown sugar it has flushed his system. Not sure how long I should continue with this though.
