Ooh I wouldn't - what about boiling a large jug of water in the morning & then pouring it out & using that ?

If I have to give Dd formula (which at 2.8 yrs is very rare!) I'd still give boiled water,

Just think it's better at you DD's age. And I'd also mix juice with cooled boiled water.

I would, it won't harm her, unless you live in spain of course! they have to get used to it at some stage..

the 0-5 book that the hv gives you states that water from the tap after 6 months is fine. Children put all sorts in their mouths anyway don't they. Each to their own however I say!

yes, dd particularly likes hers topped with bubbles

Does that mean you can make up formula with tap water then?

Not sure about that one.. Think milk bacteria issue may be a no no though. I did boil bottle water up until about 10mths, then did half and half

yep, well I do.

presumably if you decide tap water is ok...then it's ok for everything. Funny though doesn't quite feel right somehow....

agree welshmum. A 7 month old is pretty robust and starting to get into everything. I don't see a problem with tap water for formula. If concerned about milk bacteria, it is more a case of making sure that the bottles are thoroughly washed and sterilised after use.

Then again, I wouldn't even sterilise at that age. Children need to be exposed for their immune systems to develop. But I am dirty like that.

Is it for drinking on its own or for formula ?

I have no comment on the formula as I breastfeed, but as a drink I gave DS cool boiled water until he turned 1.

After 1 I started giving mineral water, until I read that mineral water isn't great for an infant (very little fluoride and other minerals).

Fluoride from tap water is good for teeth.

I know others will have different opinions though Grin

I think if you live in a hard water area, tap water is the main source of certain trace minerals etc, like magnesium.

Side note though: my dog will not touch tap water unless there's absolutely nothing else around (puddles, drains, dew on the grass...)

I'm like you blueshoes - a believer in dirt being a good thing and have never sterilised anything. If I follow my logic through tap water should now be fine for everything (ds is nearly 10 months) maybe I'll make the leap, would save a little time and faff.

I did. I figured if they were putting stuff off the floor into their mouths they were getting far more germs that way. if they were ill though (D&V) I gave boiled water for the duration of the illness just to be on the safe side. I cant comment on formula as mine were breastfed until later but when they did have formula at a year I made it with tap water as I made it up as i was giving it so it wasn't standing around

depends whether they are your first or not. Ds1 got boiled water until university, Ds2 got tap water from day 1.

OK, maybe a slight exageration, but certainly at 7 months he was on tap water and unsterilsed bottles.

official guidelines IIRC are
tap water fine from six months, but use cooled boiled water for bottles until 12 months.

I didn't bother with boiled water for bottles from about 7 months old, with no ill results!

No wyou see I just don't understand that advice. What's the difference? It's all going in their little tummies....anyone know?

Report
mojomummy · 17/03/2006 15:05

welshmum, I think that because formula powder has 'stuff' in it, the water it's mixed with has to be sterile (or whatever boiled water is). If you havee milk open you can have that at room temperate for a few hours, but with made up formula, has to be drunk within the hour.

Depends on who you talk to and which book you read. Could they make it anymore confusing?!!
