hungrier baby milk?

charliegirl25 · 10/03/2006 11:28

My friend has a 9 week old ds. She recently visited her health visitor for a check and explained to her that her ds is drinking sometimes 8 ounces and still wanting more and drinking every 2 to 3 hours. The hv suggested putting him on the hungrier baby milk but is there not negative effects of this? I'm sure i have read somewhere on here that it causes constipation. Could he not be just going through a growth spurt?

it could be a growth spurt but there is nothing wrong with trying hungry baby milk. It is made from the casein milk protein and as it takes longer to be digested it can help to get her lo to go a bit longer between feeds/take a bit less in at a time. It may be constipating but a lot of babies are fine with it. If he doesnt get on with the change of milk she can always switch him back to the first milk again.

ds went onto sma white quite early too as he was drinking about the same amount of milk. He was fine with it :)
Then I was advised to give baby rice at 4m he really was so hungry! Still eats loads now at 21m!

ok couple of things

firstly bumping a post without acknowledging people who have taken time to post to you is seen as rude here .. hence the daft post below .. there are a number of threads pointing that out atm

secondly a 9 week old eating every 2 to 3 hours does not to me sound bizarre .. it is probably a growth spurt .. personally I think she should just give him some more milk ..

i think at this stage baby will be fine.. health visitor recommended that you wait til 6 weeks. worked a treat for my dd. she was the same. also had reflux, so less volume of milk stopped her chundering as much

my baba used to be on Gold SMA and i was going thru 9 bottles of 51oz of milk per day!!!! so once she turned 8 weeks i gave her White Sma and she started to calm down on the ozs plus also started to sleep thru the nite too

i gave her water every other day to make sure she wasnt constipating and she was fine so no probs

I used sma gold to start with and when he was around 8 weeks, changed to sma white (hungry) as ds was on 7 bottles a day (9oz)sometimes and he was always finishing his bottles so quickly.
Didn't ask HV, just changed. Ds did drop a bottle and times between feeds got longer. He was already sleeping through, so wasnt an issue for us.

Oh my god, you wouldn't think that babies that small could take that sort of volume of milk in their little bellies. She is going to wait until she has finished her tub of milk and then if by that time he is still drinking that sort of volume of milk she is going to change him over. Surely then it will have calmed down if he is having a growth spurt.

Ds was 9lb 12oz at birth and by the time he was 9 weeks he weighed 13lb 15oz. Just checked when I put him on hungry milk - he was 9 weeks.

I have recently changed ds to hungry baby at 11 wks. (well 12 now) He was taking 5 7oz bottles per day and wanting more - hv suggested rather than put up the sma gold to 8 oz we should try sma white. he still takes sometimes drains the 7 oz bottles 5 times per day but isnt unhappy after. However I have noticed more wind in him - could it be the milk? hes not constipated.

could i possibly ask some advice too on this subject, my son is 6weeks i breast feed during the day and bottle feed at night unless i go out then i take a bottle, he is on sma gold and takes 4 and a half ounces with 135ml water i basically go by the tin it says 4 scoops 2wk olds and 5 scoops 2 mnth olds so i went in the middle, now sometimes he is still hungry afterwards and i don't know enough about formula to know what to do so do i up the amount or go onto sma white what would be the best thing to do??

I always get confused by these "problems" as what is wrong with a baby taking 8oz every 2/3 hrs?
Hungry baby milk is designed to be difficult to digest which puts strain on a babes immature digestive system. The only reason they go longer is because their little bodies are working overtime to attempt to digest something they aren't intended to eat....how is this a bonus?

mammyrebs, if your lo is finishing the bottle, increase the amount by an ounce or so. Babies cant read the guidelines on the tin and will want however much they need. Dont limit the amount you give just because the tin says they 'should' have a certain amount. There is no need to move to hungry baby milk.

Our health visitor explained to us recently that the hungrier baby formula is made from the curds (rather than the whey) and therefore stays in the stomach longer, takes longer to digest, so the baby stays satisfied longer. It can make their bowel movements firm up a bit, but you can do something about that if it happens.

Yes thats right. Casein is a larger protein molecule and it forms curds that are more slowly digested. Whereas normal formulas try to mimic breastmilk (because we know thats what babies digestive systems were designed to eat)these formulas reverse the casein/whey balance.
Because their systems are not designed to digest this adapted milk it may cause digestive discomfort or constipation due to the longer digestive time.

I decided to give hungrier baby milk a go at night after discussion with HV. Only did it for two feeds and each time she puked up what looked like cottage cheese quite a while after the feed. This put me off somewhat. Dont know if to try it again! When something like that happens, it may have been coincidence, but you tend to put it down to the change in feeding.

Anyone else had this cottage cheese puke scenario?

i tried SMA white on dd at 4/5 months - mainly because she was such a bad sleeper and was also too young for lots of solids. For me it worked - that same day she slept really well; the first 'good day' since she was born. I remember it well because I came downstairs totally relieved, turned on the tv to relax and - saw the twin towers collapsing Sad

8oz every 2/3 hours is not unsusual imo.
