How tragic

surely the baby would not just suffocate on the breast though? Wouldn't the baby start to snuffle and struggle away if he couldn't breathe?

I don't know, it just sounds awful - a nightmare

God, how awful
I don't know if a baby that young would struggle a lot though, especially if dehydrated - they kind of get lethargic don't they?
To my eternal shame, I didn't notice that ds1 was choking when I put him down after bf when he was 2 days old in hospital - he was resucitated as luckily a nurse was on hand and noticed straight away but I don't remember him struggling - it was just his face was so weird looking - I guess if she was breasfeeding him she would not have been able to see his little face
so tragic - poor woman

It sounds as though the baby was really poorly, and shouldn't have been discharged. IMO it would have happened whatever, it was just sad that he died at the breast. I doubt he suffocated. although perhaps PM showed he did? He was too weak to pull away.

I had DD2 at home. After running a bath for me and DD2, the midwives made up the bed, plumped up the pillows and in I got with DD2 to give her her first feed.
I was talking to DH and my other children and glanced down at her. To my horror she was turning blue...even her arms were going a grey colour and yet no struggling or anything. She was born a healthy, strong 9lb 6oz and luckily I noticed and the midwives pulled her off the breast and she quickly returned to normal.I was horrified. It could have turned into a tragedy so easily. I just thank my lucky stars every single day that she was ok. My heart goes out to this poor woman if the same thing happened...and it CAN happen.
