Infant feeding

Not to be a Stereotypical Guardian Reader, but ...

Is anyone else deeply annoyed by the formula adverts in the Guardian Parent section? What's the most effective way to complain?

They're not adverts for formula per se, more an advert for an SMA "advice" line. The graphic is weird, looks like two giant mutant breasts, off to the sides. And the tiny print has a weird note in it about how you need to take into account the financial and social implications of a feeding choice. I understand the financial bit, but not the social bit ...

But it is an advert for formula as a replacement for breastmilk, not follow-on.

i was a bit taken aback by them yesterday nqc - glad i wasn't the only one. very off of the guardian to have the advert i thought. perhaps the press complaints commission is the way to go. or a strongly worded e-mail to the weekend letters section in the magazine?

It's not the first time, either - they were in there a week ago, I think.

The graphic really bugs me.

And how is this not formula advertising?

ahem

it is advertising an 'advice line'

it is not saying 'choose formula instead of breastfeeding'

it is advertising a telephone line which is legal

..I only wish advertising was as effective as you all seem to think it is ..

Nah, it doesn't bother me. I formula fed DD1 and bf DD2, so my experience is differnt. To each her own. DD1 has no long-lasting effects from being formula fed.

Personally, I'm more bothered by smoking being glamourised in films and TV.
