Infant feeding

Denied Ice-cream because I'm breastfeeding?!?

I was approached the other day by a lovely lady who was offering free ice cream tasting as part of a Market research thing.
Obviously I thought long and hard before eventually agreeing Grin

After a few questions about what kind of ice cream I buy and how much, she asked if I had any allergies and then if I was breastfeeding. I had DD 1 years old with me and said yes. She looked at my daughter was a bit flustered and said " I mean are you breastfeeding continuously" Confused
I said I didn't really know what she meant, she said "so you are breastfeeding, I said yes ( sorry stealth boast as quite proud im "still" feeding) and she said I couldn't take part Sad

Now, apart from not getting my free ice cream I wasn't bothered about the exchange, but I don't understand why?

Am I not meant to be eating ice-cream? is there something in vanilla that could possibly be transferred to my DD? Or is it just an over cautious Health and Safety thing?

Bonkers! Surely?!

I think you should have got EXTRA ice cream for being a long term breastfeeder.

I'm with worldgonecrazy Grin and also Gincognito; this is bonkers. The only thing I've ever heard about ice cream in relation to motherhood is that pregnant women should avoid soft ice cream (the Mr Whippy type stuff). Maybe this woman had heard that and got a bit confused?

Or it could be a H&S thing, many drugs say they are not suitable for BF mothers when they haven't even been tested- they err on the side of caution and it wouldn't be ethical to test in some cases. NOT that you should ignore instructions on drugs, but it never hurts to double-check (BFN are good at that kind of thing).

Stealth-boast noted. Well done Grin

Ooo yes EXTRA ice-cream. I will mention that to my DH, who only bought me one magnum on the way home as consolation. Wink

You didn't ask why?

Well let me tell you why. If you eat ice cream while breastfeeding continuously (you know, "those" women who walk around with their 4 year olds firmly attached to their breast as a permanent adornment) your milk turns to ice-cream, which means that your children never want to wean, and you'll still be feeding them when they're at university.

Congratulations on feeding a one + year old BTW. You have every right to boast Grin. But now you know, beware of the ice cream. Especially chocolate ice cream because that flavours your milk the most.

The only reason a pregnant women should avoid mr whippy is because of potential food poisoning. I had sushi while pregnant because I was travelling around Japan and it's unavoidable. Luckily I didn't get sick.

Of course you can eat ice cream. I've eaten tons of the stuff while pregnant and breastfeeding!

Brilliant organiccarrotcake Grin that has made it so much clearer! Now I understand why DD always wants more milk after I've had my fix of cornetto Wink

So glad you all think it's bonkers, it must be some weird health and safety thing, it was on her list of questions, so not something she made up.

Grin glad to be of service.

I do recall a mum saying (prob on here) that her toddler self-weaned when she found out that her mum's boobs wouldn't produce orange juice. If only she'd known about the ice cream situation. Such a shame.

According to DS1 my boobs produce bread and butter for DS2, but not scrambled egg.

Maybe they were adding some new poisonous addictive ingredient and they weren't cleared to give it to bf women?

Pretty considerate for a conspiracy theory, but it's the best I can come up with.

ha ha. My bonkers h/v suggested that I consume lots of double cream so as to make it 'creamier' Hmm

But as a bf mother, if you had started eating the ice cream you may have eaten the lot

Wasn't breastmilk ice cream was it? Because if you eat that and breastfeed a wormhole opens up and destroys the world. Fact.

It's unavoidable to eat sushi in Japan? What?

Report
lovelybangers · 27/07/2016 06:34

OP you can probably have the ice cream - I guess DC is at school now so no longer exclusively breastfeeding.... Wink

DollyBarton · 27/07/2016 06:34

(I'd eat sushi while pregnant for the record but am just a bit surprised at the comment it's unavoidable in Japan).
