Infant feeding

DS has started taking a lot less milk - is this normal?

DS used to be a very hungry baby, easily taking down 6 oz formula bottles at most feeds for the past couple of weeks. But suddenly he's only taking around 4oz a time and not looking for any more. Is this normal? He doesn't seem distressed, and is not being sick or anything. I'm wondering if he's just cutting back as his growth spurt slows down. At 8 weeks he weighs 12lb 10 - he was born weighing 8lbs 10 and he is doing well on the 'chart', putting on the right amount of weight every weel. I'm just worried that he won't put on the right amount next week as he's taking much less food at the mo.

smiling, I would mention it to your hv when you next see her, but I would say that if he is happy, poo-ing and wee-ing frequently and not hungry, then as you say he is maybe just slowing down for a bit. The "plenty of wet/dirty nappies" is the key IMO.

I wouldn't worry if he is otherwise perfectly well - all mine have cut back on milk at some point or other. In fact ds1 was a crap feeder and never took more than about 3 oz! Honestly, i stressed constantly until I realised he was developing perfectly and growing on the amount he was taking.

He won't necessarily stay on the centile he was born on either - none of mine have, they've all dropped to lower centiles but once there have remained on them adn they perfectly happy, healthy and bright.

Don't get too hung up on weights and charts - if he seems fine, i'm sure he is

Hi Smiling,

My DD who has always been a great feeder suddenly lost interest in feeding at 8wks. It continued for about 2 wks & folk on here suggested that it may have something to do with some sort of emotional development milestone that babies reach around that time. Not sure if that was it or not but she's been feeding fine ever since & she's now 15 wks. Just thought I'd mention it as another suggestion.

I know it's quite worrying but as the others have said if he seems fine he most likely is.

Hi Freckly - thanks for your message. DS has taken a bit more at each feed today, so hopefully he'll get back on track. HE seems perfectly happy though - has recently started smiling which is fantastic!!!
