HV is concerend about dd3 lack of weight gain, and she wants me to take her back to clinic in 3 weeks time now. has advised about upping carbs/protein in her diet to get her weigt up. but i am sure i read that breastmilk is very high in calories, should i leave her permantlt on the boob lol .

i do worry about dd3 weight, as she is so little, but she has doubled her weight, is now 8months and 15lb 10oz.

As i understand it b/m has the most calories of anything you can give her.

Don't worry about her weight unless she's not looking well - and she looks like a sparkly-eyed, contented little thing.

DS is similar - he weighs not a lot, but is constantly moving - he only sits down so he can get up again, it seems!

thats what i though QV as well.

she has dropped through 2 percentiles (which are based on formula fed babies arent they?) but she has started crawling very fast the last month. she is never still lol.

dd1 was small as well, and very slow to gain, and being 1st time mum, very young with PND i succumbed to formula, and regretted it since, she always had eczema but when we switched to forula, plus combination of jabs her skin really flared up. still does when she needs jabs which is why she hasnt had a pre-school booster yet even tho she is in year 1.

OK, I have DS's red book in front of me. He was bfed till he was nearly 17mo and ate like a horse from about 8mo - still does. Eats more than I do some days

He was born weighing 8lb 10oz, on the 75th centile.

When he was one, he weighed 19lb 7oz, less than 2.5 times his birthweight and between the 9th and 25th centiles. A month ago, at 18mo, he weighed 23lb 11oz - he still hasn't got to 3 times his birthweight.

Sorry - not turning this into a how much does HM's DS weigh thread - just wanted to reassure you that some babies just don't put on weight all that fast! Especially not when they're motoring about the place!

If she's just started crawling that would explain it.

Just keep up the b/feeding

this is so silly, dd2 gained weigth so fast that at 1year old i had one HV telling me to put her on a diet.

why are we always made to worry.

i generally dont get dd3 weighed as she is happy healthy, meeting her milestones etc, but went for 8month check.

My ds1 was 7.5kg at 32 weeks on the 9th centile having been born on just over 50th. He was breast then bottle fed. He was an active little thing though!

Misdee - this is why ds3 hasn't seen a HV since he was abut 2 months old ! I don't need them to tell me anything - i know he's fine! If I'm worried, I'llcontact someone! They stress you out unnecessarily.

IMO ignore HV, don't go back until next developmental check unless you become worried.

Tell a lie - just looked in his red book and got a measurement on 36 weeks - don't remember that!

He started on 75th centile and by then was on just under 25th.

Bottle fed

I just don't do bloaters!

i used to have a really caring hv who would actually listen and do her best to help(specially with referrals for dd)but since she has gone on secondment from clinic i feel i have no trust with the new one and therefore worry about being pressurised into making the wrong decisions for ds, especially after being told that a jab dd had was suitable for her(dairy/lactose free)and she immediately vomited and continued for about an hour having an allergic reaction...........it contained lactose

sorry misdee(you don't need this worry on top of everything else, your dd3 looks well and you would be the first to know if you thought otherwise)

love to you all xx

hey, at least you can all find your little red books!!!!

Report
mojomummy · 08/11/2005 23:17

Misdee, just checked my red book & your DD is the same weight as my Dd was at that age - just above the 9th centile ? My Dd is now 2.5yrs & on the 75th centile for weight & 91st for height.

My Dd was & is fine - I am sure yours is doing just great aso - ask the HV to measure her height as well...worth taking that into account.

yes - these charts are for bottle feed babies - so ask her to provide you with a breastfed one. That should give her something to think about !
