The issue with pate when pregnant is two things:

  • listeria, a bacterial risk. This is probably ok if the pate is good quality, well-stored etc.
  • vitamin A overdose. This is with all liver products. This isn't really a significant risk - a friend told me that one woman, overdosed on Vitamin A. She was drinking liver milkshakes. She'd gone completely doolally for liver. A bit of liver now and then is fine.

    Neither risk applies when breastfeeding.

And mummysmilk, the first risk applies to babies, I think. I wouldn't worry too much, but pate's probably not great for them. Oh, it's high salt, too. But liver is fine, from whenever you give meat.

Oh, good point aloha.

I know I certainly really wanted to eat everything in the early days.

babycentre and annabel karmel both say to avoid giving pate to your lo until they are 1 year old. Liver itself is ok from about 6 months
