tut, bloody ridiculous!

Made even worse by the fact that there was nobody even in the store.

Come to think of it, surely they had a nice changing room, why couldn't she sit there? (Nicer for her and the baby i'd imagine!)

The couple now deny that they were offered the use of the changing room.

Sounds a bit fishy if you ask me.

Don't get me wrong, I am not, of course, condoning the shops attitude, but the couple sound a bit.......
it just doesn't add up.

Tbh - I just don't see the need to feed in a shop regardless of what other people think. I wouldn't get a bottle out and feed a baby in a shop either - if the baby cried and wanted a feed I'd go and find a cafe to feed them in. Yes, babies go a bit ballistic when hungry but it's not instantaneous and it won't kill them to cry for 5 minutes while you find a suitable spot to sit.

I'm not in the least bit offended by anyone breastfeeding and it wouldn't bother me but I don't think there is any reason to be doing it in the middle of a shop.

As the shopping centre's mother & baby facilities had been closed for a week and she had no other option, you would think the store staff could have been more helpful.

But GdG, it's a lot easier with b/fing - haul squalling baby out of buggy, attach to breast, you're done. You can even walk around doing so, racking up further purchases.

Report
Caligula · 19/09/2005 11:30

GdG why on earth would you go and look for a cafe? What if you didn't want a cup of tea? If I'm out shopping even without the kids, there is no way I am going to go and walk for 10 minutes to go to a venue I don't want to go to, only in order to have to come back to the same dept store half an hour later to carry on shopping. You must have a lot more energy than me, because I personally find shopping absolutely deadening after about an hour - I can't face getting up and walking anywhere remotely unnecessary.

funnily enough, the strongest anti response I got was in a Tesco cafe, from an old woman who pointedly got up and moved her seat so she didnt have to look at me b'feeding dd2.

Idve thought a cafe would be safe territory too!

I agree with lockets, I would automatically use the changing room.
I think that alot people would automatically think of the changing room, too.
Which makes it all sound fishy - the shop is saying that the couple were offered this.
The couple are denying that they were offered the use of the changing room.

I fed DD2 in our local Boots - sitting on a chair - and had to keep sniggering as passers-by tried very obviously not at my norks. I honestly wouldn't have minded if they'd sneaked a quick glance, ffs, perfectly fine and functional norks they are too.

I wouldn't use the changing room. I'm sick of the idea breastfeeding has to be 'discreet' to be acceptable.

There are big seats in Debenhams where i was the other day and i sat down and fed my baby. (she;s bottlefed) but tbh, if anyone had said anything i would have said that i have as much right as the next person to sit down and she just drinks and goes, she can down a bottle in no time . (I probably would have just said sod off!)

I do prefer to sit in a cafe mind you when i have time.

What species does he think babies are then?

Agree tho why should it have to be done out of sight? I eat my lunch in full view of everyone!

tbh I can't understand why some of you can't see why some people don't like to watch mothers breastfeed.

Okay, so it's the most natural thing in the world - so is picking your nose and I love a good dig myself from time to time but I ain't going to do it in the middle of a shop.

I don't like seeing dog owners who obviously adore their pets let them lick their faces but they're perfectly entitled to do it and I totally agree that should be able to do what you want, where you want, when you want within the rules of society - my point is, I can see why other members of the public wouldn't want to see certain things.

gawd I have waffled on a bit there!

A rather nice journalist whose name I forget - Caitlin Moran, that's the girl - had a great piece in Junior Pregnancy & Baby a while back, on how the three nicest sights in the world are a fine pair of tits, a happy baby, and a good meal and that b/fing combines the lot, plus a nice bra too if you're lucky.

Ooooh JoolsToo - haven't seen breastfeeding compared with nose-picking before! Now if I was the po-faced sort of breastfeeder, I could get into high dudgeon about that one......

oh i like her mi. i'm a bit evangelical about feeding wherever i happen to be - it tends to mean people don't sit next to you on the bus which is a huge bonus!
