Infant feeding

changes in feeding?

Over the past few days, ds (14 weeks) has been acting a little 'odd' at some feedings. Sometimes he won't want the second breast, or he'll stay on the breast (usually the second, sometimes the first) for a few minutes before pulling off and either staring at something or crying. He's also started making noises while feeding (again, not at every feeding), which sometimes lead to him pulling off and sometimes don't. He feeds about 10-11 times in 24 hours, on average every two hours (at night there's at least one longer stretch), but will also sometimes go for three hours and can go up to five hours at night, which worries me a bit because he used to feed very frequently indeed and I'm a little concerned about my milk supply. His time at the breast seems to be getting shorter too (again, not at every feeding!). Some feedings will be fairly long, others pretty short. He seems generally happy, is very attentive, alert and playful (and hardly sleeps during the day!). Could he just be getting more distractible, hence the pulling off and noise-making (he seems to have discovered his voice too recently) and shortening/lessening his feeds (and not always wanting the second breast) just because his needs have changed or he's more efficient at getting the milk more quickly? Or could it be something else? Should I worry about milk supply?

Berolina - sounds just like my ds at about that age. just very interested in his surroundings and becoming a more efficient feeder. ds didn't bother with 2nd breast from about 3 months really. so glad to see things have worked out so well for you and ds - well done for perservering

It's normal! He's getting older, more aware of his surroundings and more distractable. At six months dd is hilarious - pulls off, looks around the room, smiles at random strangers, grabs my hair, then - maybe - latches on again. Very discreet, I don't think. He sounds like he's doing wonderfully well.
