I started reading it at 11pm, thought I'd get a couple of chapters in then go to sleep. Kept on reading and it got to 2am. Then 3 and so on. Read the lot by 7am blush Dp work's night shift and I texted him to tell him I hadn't slept but it was self induced. He couldn't believe it, staying up out of choice? confused

What a gripping read, totally absorbing. The two main characters weren't all that likeable which makes a change, you usually like one of them. I suppose of the two I'd warmed to him and of course her before I 'knew'.

I've recommended it to everyone I've spoken to today, and on FB. I doubt anyone will be quite as keen to finish it as me? grin

Patchouli Sun 10-Feb-13 16:27:30

I'm reading it just now.

I started this on Friday night. It hasn't gripped me yet, but it is holding my interest.

BOF Sun 10-Feb-13 16:30:37

I really enjoyed it, although I found it slow to get going. Try Dark Places next- it's even better, I think.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt Sun 10-Feb-13 16:31:23

Also meant to say, is it a big title at the moment? It's our current book group read but I hadn't heard of it.

HanneHolm Sun 10-Feb-13 16:31:38

notnowImreading Sun 10-Feb-13 19:06:06

I liked it - it was very cleverly put together with some sections that had lovely writing. I actually liked Amy more once the gloves were off. Diary Amy bugged me a lot, which I think she was meant to.

HanneHolm Sun 10-Feb-13 19:07:26

resists urge to talk heft on a GG thread

CuriousMama Sun 10-Feb-13 19:24:34

Yes notnow, a sociopath is so very likeable grin Poor Des wink

HH what's GG?

CuriousMama Sun 10-Feb-13 19:24:55

Ahh Gone Girl thread haha.

CuriousMama Sun 10-Feb-13 19:25:55

No it was Desi wasn't it? Lots of fuck ups in this book.

notnowImreading Sun 10-Feb-13 20:56:28

I know, nice ordinary girl = annoying, sociopathic nutter= more likeable. Sorry.

Funny you should mention Where'd You Go Bernadette - that's another title we've got lined up for Bookclub later in the year...

Meanwhile do make sure you come and ask Gillian Flynn a question on Tue 26 Feb...

ArcticRoll Mon 11-Feb-13 14:07:49

Agree totally gripping-it's being made into a film.
Another good thriller is The Wicked Girls by Alex Marwood-not quite as compelling though.

DancesWithBabies Mon 11-Feb-13 14:11:34

I LOVED Gone Girl! Haven't read anything as good for awhile so was gutted when I finished it (ridiculously) fast. Reviews I've read about it since have severely criticised the unconventional ending - I couldn't disagree more, the way it ended left me with a creeped out feeling which fit perfectly with the entire tone of the book! grin

CuriousMama Mon 11-Feb-13 14:44:02

ArcticRoll funny that was one of the questions I'd thought of, will it be made into a movie? It'll adapt onto the screen really well hopefully.

CuriousMama Mon 11-Feb-13 14:44:58

DancesWithBabies but did you stay up all night reading it? grin Also agree about the ending, nice and creepy!

BelindaCarlisle Mon 11-Feb-13 15:25:42

I was meh to wicked girls. Too Itv drama

BelindaCarlisle Mon 11-Feb-13 15:26:58

Tilly that's ace. It's a good read.
I also liked the John green book stars something. Out now.
V sad though. But sassy ;)

Am about to finish Alex green versus the universe. Like.

BOF Mon 11-Feb-13 16:21:30

I think Reece Witherspoon bought the rights with a view to producing and starting in a film version.

Ragwort Mon 11-Feb-13 16:22:42

I agree, it was an excellent read.

Any recommendations of other titles by the same author?

shrinkingnora Mon 11-Feb-13 16:23:52

I've just finished Where'd you go Bernadette? and it is absolutely amazing. Totally loved it.

BOF Mon 11-Feb-13 19:12:54

Ragwort- I loved Dark Places.

CuriousMama Tue 12-Feb-13 08:43:06

I just looked, says Reece is producing it but not starring in it?

Ragwort Tue 12-Feb-13 16:18:49

Thanks BOF, will order it from library.

BelindaCarlisle Wed 13-Feb-13 12:33:50

I have a new book rec. Simon Armitage. Walking home. Don't let the poet crap put you off. It's excellent.

babyfirefly1980 Wed 20-Feb-13 20:11:51

I just finished 'Sharp Objects' and started 'Gone Girl'.

I read Where'd you go Bernadette a while age, very good book.

Tinamoo Fri 22-Mar-13 18:50:53

I finished this last week and although I enjoyed it, I hated the ending!!

ElegantSufficiency Fri 22-Mar-13 18:55:35

I read all three gf books and liked them all. i will look up where did ya go to bernadette? who wrote that?

sukysue Mon 25-Mar-13 20:25:30

No did not like it at all think it must be met thought it was a bit slow to get going to be honest.

snail1973 Sun 21-Apr-13 22:43:16

I really enjoyed Gone Girl and liked the ending. I didnt see it coming although cruicially I also hadn't read anything about there being a twist in the tale either, so I wasnt really thinking ahead.

However, have to say I thought Where'd You Go Bernadette was a bit rubbish. Not in same class as Gone Girl imo, and what a stupid ending!
