Judy Blume is a revolutionary. Her books have sold more than eighty-five million copies in thirty-two languages. She wrote about racism, bullying, sex, menstruation — you name it, she did it - with clarity, warmth and honesty. Now she has written what she says will be her ‘final novel for adults’, using her own experience of catastrophic plane crashes in her hometown as the central plot. IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT is set in 1950s suburban America, and told in a chorus of voices, covering the whole small town. Miri is an amusing and gawky 14 year old living with her glamorous single mother, her make-up saleswoman grandmother and her journalist uncle. Miri’s best friend, Natalie, comes from a wealthier family whereas her first-love/almost-boyfriend Mason is an orphan. When three separate planes fall out of the sky in the space of three months, the impact on the community is immense. Fear, panic, horror and a desperate need to make sense of the devastation means that emotions and relationships are pushed to the limit. But it is the long-term fallout that Blume really explores, with repercussions on her characters drawn out over three generations. It is a beautifully crafted, tightly woven work of art, with Blume’s unmistakable voice ringing throughout.

To find out more about the book, and for your chance to win one of 50 copies, please go to the book of the month page and fill in your details before 10am Monday 27 June. We'll post on this thread when all the copies have gone.

Judy Blume - such a popular author amongst Mumsnet readers. Her name is always mentioned when anyone asks for book/author recommendations and I am ashamed to admit I have yet to read one of her books. Off to the library to put that right! Looking forward to 8th August.

Oh! How I wish I could be there! 😞
Judy...Superfudge still rates in my top ten and I'm 43!
I loved it, and I will love sharing it with my son.
Your books meant so much to me as a child - they helped me to understand my world.
Thank you x

Just as Badders said: I'm a massive fan since childhood and Judy explained so much about life to me. I'm really sad that I'll be away in August and no idea if there'll be wifi...,
I'm really looking forward to the new book though

I read Are You There God? It's me, Margaret when I was 12 or 13 & recently found a dog eared copy in a second hand bookshop & bought it for my DD. Am 46 and still remember so much of it.

Also introduced DCs to the Fudge series and The Pain & the Great One.

Love Judy Blume Smile

My childhood in books begins with Judy Blume. I loved her books when I was growing up-they answered all of my questions and raised some too.

My question is: Did you know the books were going to be so successful and shape a generation of women? (Or rather, was it your intention?)

I'm another who had been a fan of Judy's for years. Well, decades.

Has not had. I am still alive, and still a fan of Judy's.

I've loved Judy Blume's books since I was a teenager - too many years ago :)

The books were like a friend to me growing up (sad though that sounds!!)

My question is - if you were going to write books like Forever today, how different do you think they would be with the advent of social media, online bullying/porn etc?

I was first introduced to Fudge & Peters family back in primary school. I've read almost all of your books for children/young adults, & I'm looking forward to reading this.
I am looking forward to introducing your books to my DC - especially 'Are you there God' to my DD when she is a bit older.
Judy, your books got me through a tough time when I was younger (I was badly bullied at school), and I would just like to thank you for writing them.

Loved her books as a kid. They were passed around friends and we're very well read!

I read every single one of Judy's books between about 1981 and 1984. What an amazing ability to relate to people.

My question would be - As a 78 year old (sorry!) how was your adolescence different from the ones you have written about?

No question but just wanted to say thank you for all the amazing books. I loved them as a child and now my 12 yr old is discovering them. Didn't know there was a new one. Will buy it now. Love love love your books.

I loved Judy Blumes books when I was a teen, I've re-bought some as an adult (Tiger Eyes is my all-time favourite)
My question is, which of your books would you consider as your favourite? (You don't have to tell the other books!)

Loved all your books Judy, especially Margaret, and I don't think I was the only one to secretly read a copy of Forever. Certainly I will always associate the name Ralph with it!

Report
MsKite · 22/06/2016 19:54

Haha at Ralph! I've just started reading the fudge books to my ds. He was reluctant to listen to 'otherwise know as Sheila the great' due to it being written from a girl's perspective Hmm but since I started reading it there have been no complaints! I remember my junior schoo teacher reading them to the class when I was about the same age and we all loved them. Can't wait to get onto 'super fudge'. No question I can think of, but just thanks, Judy Smile

Loved Judy's books growing up. Still remember some of them really well now and as others have said looking forward to DS being old enough for us to enjoy the 'fudge' books together.
My question would be which character/book was Judy's favourite to write

Report
SkaterGrrrrl · 22/06/2016 21:29

I am forever grateful for Judy's books. I inhaled them as a young teen. They were entertaining and informative (my mom was silent as the grave about puberty). I loved Sally J Friedman and the girl in Tiger Eyes.
