Book giveaway - what am I doing wrong?!

CravingSleep Wed 16-May-12 19:09:13

So here I am at 7pm with my first bookclub email - poised to fill out a form...

and all the links for each book either go to amazon (for the blurb) or to a mumsnet review page with "This form is currently private and cannot be viewed by the general public" at the bottom...

... am I doing something wrong? Clicking wrong? I was so ready to get a free book!

Abcinthia Wed 16-May-12 19:09:56

It's not gone live yet, I don't think.

Helbel78 Wed 16-May-12 19:10:42

same for me too!!

jimswifein1964 Wed 16-May-12 19:10:46

I have that too. Very frustrating, as I'm trying to do this and deal with bedtime wink

HalfSpamHalfBrisket Wed 16-May-12 19:11:32

Same here! Sorry to be absolutely no use to you, but at least you know you are not sitting there on your own not getting a book whilst everyone else is!

Abcinthia Wed 16-May-12 19:12:14

i'm trying to put DD to bed as well!

It's probably going to go live in a few minutes when I have to help her brush her teeth - just my luck!

OvO Wed 16-May-12 19:12:26

Someone at MNTowers needs to put the gin down and press whatever button needs pressing. wink

Fillybuster Wed 16-May-12 19:12:53

Me too....bundled all 3 dcs into bed super-fast to be able to hit the 7pm slot....and nothing....<sigh>

Belo Wed 16-May-12 19:15:02

Not working for me either. Just says form private. Does that mean the books have gone?!

lambfam Wed 16-May-12 19:19:14

so annoying. been sitting here for 20 minutes pressing refresh and nothing. have to go collect daughter now, so going to miss out again. why say 7pm if you cant be ready by then

Belo Wed 16-May-12 19:20:50

I've got a book group to go to.... Need to leave in 5mins. Please start working! I quite fancy the Henry Experiment.

Abcinthia Wed 16-May-12 19:21:43

They were late last month too, but not as late as they are tonight.

megabored Wed 16-May-12 19:23:30

7.25 and still nothing. are they ALL gone?

utterlyslutterly Wed 16-May-12 19:24:06

Maybe they are having dinner?

Belo Wed 16-May-12 19:24:12

Need to leave... Will it work from my mobile?

jodee Wed 16-May-12 19:25:57

First time for me too, last month I missed out but there was a different message that said the books had gone, so hopefully it's just a glitch this month.

RachelMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 16-May-12 19:26:21

We're so sorry - there's been a glitch but it's fixed now. We're going to open all the forms at 7.30pm this evening. Good luck everyone and sorry again for the delay this evening.

utterlyslutterly Wed 16-May-12 19:27:04

Whats the Hold up MN?

jodee Wed 16-May-12 19:27:05

ahh, told you!!

utterlyslutterly Wed 16-May-12 19:27:38

Oh good- thanks

RachelMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 16-May-12 19:32:07

The forms are now live. Good luck!

CravingSleep Wed 16-May-12 19:51:33

Ah thankyou very much MNHQ. However now gin has been mentioned I want one! Is it wrong to drink on my own even though my husband is away this week and I'm co-sleeping.... (I do know the answer to that one ;))

I may have made an etiquette mistake too. I'd really like the Julia Donaldson one so filled that form out.. but it doesn't tell you if you are one of the first 50 (i may not be as I ended up doing bedtime as I'd already ignored them for 15minutes and hell was breaking loose!) So I filled out the others too in case I had a chance there in stead. I now suspect I'm only really supposed to fill out one so if I've got a Julia one can the others be deleted? Or is that ok? If I won them all (!!) I'd definitely read and comment - I'm so excited to be part of a book club as I'm never able to go out during the week (husband away) but I suspect that's not exactly fair.

And now I'm rabbiting. I so want gin.

lambfam Wed 16-May-12 19:54:23

I came back after my Brownies pick up and it was live, so have also entered more than once. It would be good if form could be removed once books have all gone, but guess that would be difficult to arrange. I thought that perhaps one was more popular, so if I tried more than one I may have more chance.
Hope that was okay!

CravingSleep Wed 16-May-12 19:58:13

That was exactly what I though!

aliciaflorrick Wed 16-May-12 19:59:07

I'm not getting a form, it's just going straight through to the Amazon page and I don't get the book club emails any more - tisn't fair I tell you.

RachelMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 16-May-12 20:23:40

Click the link where it says '50 copies to giveaway' and you'll be taken to the book giveaway page (if you click the title of the book it does take you to Amazon). Sorry to hear you're not getting the book club email. We'll get our tech team to check out why this is happening and get back to you in the morning.

Tee2072 Wed 16-May-12 21:00:11

Sorry, what link that says '50 copies to give away'? On what page?

BiscuitNibbler Wed 16-May-12 21:35:21

The link is on the Bookclub email, Tee.

clux73 Wed 16-May-12 22:31:32

Why do I not get the newsletter??

RachelMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 17-May-12 09:43:46

First of all big apologies for the delay in opening the forms last night. There was a glitch which we rectified and hopefully this shouldn't happen again. We're listening to all your ishoos and concerns about how the book giveaways work and are going to figure out a system which we'll put into practice next month which we hope will be more convenient and ensure everyone has a chance to access the books. This said, do bear in mind that 250 people will be getting free books this month so it's not all bad smile

With regard to receiving the newsletter; make sure you're signed up to receive the bookclub newsletter, check that we have the right email address for you and also check your spam and junk folders in case it's been filtered.

As soon as we have a concrete plan as to how it's going to work next month, we'll post guidelines up here.

typicalvirgo Thu 17-May-12 09:57:26

I think I am signed up for the newsletter too but I haven't received it.

But I have received a copy of Night Waking this month - so I don't want to appear too ungrateful smile

I've tried to get to the form it there's a note saying 'This form is currently private and cannot be viewed by the public' I'm logged into Mumsnet. The is the first time I've tried to do. What am I doing wrong?

ChooChooLaverne Thu 17-May-12 10:33:31

Are we allowed to fill in a form for more than one book?

janthea Thu 17-May-12 11:14:17

I've clicked on every link in the email and still get the message that this form is currently private and cannot be viewed by the public. I'm still logged into Mumsnet and am signed up for the books email. What else should I do?

PaddingtonsMarmalade Thu 17-May-12 11:19:27

Is there any chance the forms could go live at another time of day - say, later than 7pm? I'm always dealing with the joy that is persuading my DC to go to bed then and can't multitask enough to fill in forms then too.

RachelMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 17-May-12 12:06:05

The forms are all closed now Janthea as the books all went last night.

RachelMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 17-May-12 12:07:27

Thanks for the suggestions, do keep them coming in and we'll post up our revised plan next week.

Poledra Thu 17-May-12 12:16:48

So, what's the etiquette on applying for more than 1 book? I have done this and assumed that if I got one, then MNHQ would play fair and not let me have another one. Are my assumptions correct? And would we already have an email if we'd got lucky this month?

NoraHelmer Thu 17-May-12 13:52:01

I applied for more than one book, on the assumption that I might get one of them.

Perhaps a fairer way would be to have one form where we put our choice in order of preference, so that everyone who applies only gets one book although it might not be their first choice (a bit like applying for a school place!) smile

janthea Thu 17-May-12 14:47:36

Thanks, Rachel. It's the first time I've tried to do this and wasn't sure. I now understand.
