Hi
I've just finished reading the book. What a revelation!
Fasting today. Looking forward to eating tomorrow.
Would love to hear about your experiences. Xxxx

VivaLeBeaver Sun 24-Mar-13 09:16:51

Hi, I'm wanting to start doing this very soon.

Have bought the book but haven't read it yet. Have skimmed some threads on here. Just got back from holiday last night and have no food in the house so not very well prepared. Guess I could just eat weetabix today???

VivaLeBeaver Sun 24-Mar-13 09:17:36

Just realised you posted yesterday.

How did the first fast day go?

linkainka Sun 24-Mar-13 12:53:06

Hi xx I read some of the threads but to be honest got a little lost in them... I would rather just chat to a couple of people doing the same thing.
My fast went well yesterday. Porridge for breakfast. One of the oats so simple sachets with water. Then I had an apple for lunch. Tea was a salmon fillet with lots of salad. No dressing. Overall about 505 cal.
I'm eating as normal today. Bit to be fair haven't been tempted to overcompensate.
Had some cereal for breakfast. Then a banana. Now having an egg and tomato sandwich.
Cooking roast chicken for dinner which should be nice.
Good luck for when u start. Keep me posted.
I'm fasting tomorrow again. Xx

notjustamummythankyou Sun 24-Mar-13 13:57:43

I'm reading the book at the moment and very keen to get going! I'm back to work tomorrow after maternity leave though, so I think it may be a bit too much to start fasting this week too.

So, am planning to start next week and have one of my days at work as a fasting day. Hopefully, that'll keep my mind off any hunger pangs! Having said that, I'm really surprised that you can eat quite well on 500 calories (or at least I'm hoping that's the case!)

Linkainka - did you get any headaches or feel shaky at all?

VivaLeBeaver Sun 24-Mar-13 14:05:57

I've got a headache at the minute and feel as cranky as hell.

Skipped breakfast, had a cup of tea only.

Had a pear about 11:30 as was starving. I've had two weetabix for lunch with minimal milk. Luckily I like them crunchy. Also had a muller light yoghurt. I'm guessing so far I've had over 300 cals which isn't good. Had a big glass of water and then a coffee.

Planning on having salmon and steamed veg this evening.

Sounds like your day went well yesterday Links. I know what you mean about getting a bit lost reading some of the established threads. They're quite busy and I guess at a different stage. It'd be nice to have people to "start" with. smile

VivaLeBeaver Sun 24-Mar-13 14:07:42

notjustamummy. Maybe it'll be easier to do at work as there'll be less temptations?? Unless you have a good canteen I suppose.

In the past I've found it easier not to snack when I'm at work as keeping busy means I think about food less.

notjustamummythankyou Sun 24-Mar-13 14:37:36

No canteen at our place - just the pesky vending machine in the foyer! I'll be in a new office when I go back though, so it won't be right outside my door which will be a bonus. smile

When I'm at home it's so easy to keep peering in the fridge to see what's occurring. At least I won't have that temptation.

I know what you mean about the established threads - so many seem to be on maintenance already, and I felt a bit out of place asking what I fear are really basic questions.

You're probably there already, but I found this website - it's written by the same authors as the book. There's also a dedicated forum too, which I'm finding useful for menu ideas.

So what's on the menu for future fasting days?!

VivaLeBeaver Sun 24-Mar-13 15:20:04

Thanks for the links, I'd not found the forum before and it looks good.

What's on the menu?? Well I think that's why I'm so shit at diets.....I'm an awful cook. Soups and salads probably.

I'm ordering the hairy bikers diet book as I hear that's good.

I can do a prawn stir fry so probably lots of those.

I need some ideas for lunches at work. When dieting in the past its been salad leaves with ham, maybe a boiled egg and balsamic vinegar for a dressing. I need some more exciting stuff.

I've got this recipe saved on my ipad which I'm going to make on Tuesday for lunch.

notjustamummythankyou Sun 24-Mar-13 16:25:03

Yes, it's work lunches I'm struggling with too. I can see that I'll be depending on soup!

I did find a couple of interesting blogs today with loads of recipe ideas - here and here.

Oh, and an article on [[http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/9483381/52-diet-healthy-recipes-250-calories-or-less.html The Telegraph's website], with additional links to further information.

If I don't plan, I find that I very quickly just can't be bothered and end up eating any old thing! Going to have a good browse and get inspired. smile

notjustamummythankyou Sun 24-Mar-13 16:25:42

Sorry - link fail:

Telegraph website

linkainka Sun 24-Mar-13 17:25:53

Dear notjustamommythankyou
Don't worry about headaches. They just a sing you need some water!
Or a caffeine withdrawal which is a good thing.
I'm hoping to lose about a stone. Slowly and steadily. And keep it off.
I like this diet because you have something to look forward to not just deprivation all the time. Like today I've had a nice breakfast and lunch. I'm cooking a roast now. I'm fasting tomorrow so can have nice food today. Strangely I've not been snacking a lot. Had a handful of almonds earlier and a banana.
The kids' biscuits are around and I'm not even tempted.
Good luck everyone. I think this diet is perfect. Xxx

VivaLeBeaver Sun 24-Mar-13 18:20:11

I've not done very well trying to keep to 500cals.

Two weetabix
A rice crispie square
A small fruit scone
Two pears
A muller light
Salmon and sweetcorn

However it is less than I'd normally have, so an improvement!

linkainka Sun 24-Mar-13 19:19:26

Well done. Sounds like a very good menu.
I'm not sure what to plan for tomorrow as have a busy day at work. I think oats so simple porridge sachet and maybe innocent pot with extra veg. 1 piece of fruit for lunch? How does this sound? Xx

VivaLeBeaver Sun 24-Mar-13 19:23:31

That sounds good but will you be able to go from breakfast till tea time with only a bit of fruit at lunch? I guess the oat so simple will be slow release gi so hopefully will keep you feeling full for a while but it still sounds tough???

linkainka Sun 24-Mar-13 19:27:38

I can only try. I've done it before. I just keep thinking about the evening meal and Tuesday when I can eat anything xx how's it going for u?

VivaLeBeaver Sun 24-Mar-13 20:04:53

I'm going to have another fasting day tomorrow, day off work tomorrow.

Only problem is I take the dog for a 90 min walk in the morning so will need breakfast or I'll faint.

Which probably means I can't have lunch.

However if I also do a 30 day shred DVD could I have soup at lunch as ill have burnt loads of calories doing exercise or doesn't it work like that?

Hopefully going to make an Aubergine curry for dinner.

MarcelineTheVampireQueen Sun 24-Mar-13 20:07:53

I'm dying to start but I don't have the book, I can't afford it, do I need it?

Ponyphysio Sun 24-Mar-13 20:16:54

I started 5/2 last week, found it quite easy really. I def found it better to use my calories on protein rather than wasting them on bread at 114 calories a slice. For breakfast I had a poached egg with 2 slices ham and a sliced tomato - really filled me up. Lunch was a big bowl of carrot and coriander soup, tea was a small tin of beans and some sliced chicken. Mid afternoon I needed something sweet so I had a low-cal jelly pot at 9 calories, so my total count for the day was 499 calories inc skimmed milk in tea. Def easier to do at work/when busy. Hope this helps!

MidnightMasquerader Sun 24-Mar-13 21:37:37

Hi all - can I join you? Decided to start this today and so came on here knowing someone woud be talking about it, and sure enough... grin

I would like to shift about 8-10 kilos (c. 16-20 lbs).

I don't have the book either, Marceline - but there seems to be a lot of info on the internet. And hence me joining this thread too!

VivaLeBeaver Sun 24-Mar-13 21:46:45

I've still not read the book. Have flicked through some of the recipes in it but to be honest haven't been inspired by any I've seen so far. There's plenty of stuff on the Internet.

500 cals two days a week, or three if you want to push it. The other days you need to eat your allowance which you need to work out for yourself. It differs depending on your weight, height, age, etc. mine is 2100 cals a day apparently.

Found this website which looks like it has some good recipes

www.lavenderandlovage.com/category/posts/general/5-2-diet

notjustamummythankyou Sun 24-Mar-13 22:02:35

viva - I seem to remember reading somewhere that you can't eat more if you've exercised (as you can with ww, for eg).

I might have read it on the 5:2 forum I linked to earlier - I know there was a very useful faq section on there. I'm on my mobile so can't do a link I'm afraid ...

HansieMom Sun 24-Mar-13 22:25:22

I have been doing this about ten days. Tomorrow will be third fast day. I have a lot to lose, fifty pounds. Someone mentioned green salads. My son makes delicious ones. He uses organic lettuce, varies the rest, could be coconut, nuts, dates, raisens, cheese, ham, turkey, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, celery, salmon, carrots. For oil he uses walnut oil. He is going low carb for health benefits, not weight loss. He is already thin. I tried low carb but miss the pasta, tortillas, beans.

VivaLeBeaver Sun 24-Mar-13 22:31:04

That salad sounds nice Hansie, is walnut oil the only dressing?

Notjustamummy , sadly you're right about not been able to have extra calories for exercising. I checked that forum and it is in the FAQ.

HansieMom Mon 25-Mar-13 02:28:45

Yes, walnut oil only. You do not need much. Interesting taste! It comes in a can at regular grocery store, has a flip top, maybe 16 ounces.

VivaLeBeaver Mon 25-Mar-13 07:02:08

Well have to get some and try that.

linkainka Mon 25-Mar-13 09:21:32

Hi ladies. My second fast day today. Was hoping to go to work and be busy but had to come back as school is closed. confused
Will have to get through the day with eating little and not being too busy which is going to be hard.
Anyone fasting today?

You're right about the exercise. Even if u burn 1000 kcal u can still eat only 500 hmm xxx

linkainka Mon 25-Mar-13 14:23:25

God it's tough. I have had a porridge with blueberries. Then an apple. Not due to eat now till tea time.
Feeling hunger. Trying to subside it with sparking water and herbal teas.
Only thing that keeps me going is eating normally tomorrow xx

VivaLeBeaver Mon 25-Mar-13 15:47:18

I haven't fasted today, decided two days in a row was a bad idea.

I've had weetabix for breakfast, soup for lunch and a chocolate bar...ooops.

linkainka Mon 25-Mar-13 16:45:36

Hi Viva
That's really good for a non fast day!
I'm fasting today because didn't yesterday. Last week was my first week so I only fasted on Saturday.
This week I will do Monday and Thursday or might swap Thursday for Friday it being Good Friday too.
Just making my early tea as starving.
Keeping the innocent pot for tomorrow as over 300 kcal and would go over.
How many weeks have u been doing 5:2? What are your results? Xx

VivaLeBeaver Mon 25-Mar-13 16:47:06

I'm just cooking an Aubergine and spinach curry for tea, not sure it looks very nice.

ErikNorseman Mon 25-Mar-13 16:52:14

Hi guys, even if you don't want to jump in to the long threads (and you are welcome) there are loads of tips and information in the OP of each one, you might find it useful. My tips are never to try two consecutive days, and hold off eating as long as possible. Breakfast is not necessary and tends to open up my appetite and once you have skipped breakfast skipping lunch is easy.

linkainka Mon 25-Mar-13 16:57:42

Hi Erik
How long have u been IF and what are the results?
Viva, the curry sounds yum. What's the recipe? Xx

VivaLeBeaver Mon 25-Mar-13 18:47:32

This is the curry recipe, I found it on another thread on here. To be honest I didn't like it much but people on the other thread liked it, could be my crap cooking.

Aubergine Chickpea and Spinach curry

serves 4 huge portions at about 200 cals each

1 x 400g tin chickpeas
2 medium aubergines, cut into cubes
2 onions chopped
A couple of sprays of olive oil
2.5cm knob of fresh root ginger, grated
4 cloves of garlic,
1 hot chilli pepper, seeded and chopped (more or less depending on how hot you like it)
2 tsp ground coriander
2 tsp ground cumin
½ tsp Turmeric
3 cardamom split
1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes
225g spinach, chopped roughly
Bunch of fresh coriander chopped
Vegetable stock cube made up to about 400ml

Stir fry the onion in a couple of sprays of oil to brown, adding a little stock if it seems to burn
Add the aubergine cubes and just enough stock to keep them moist,. Add the ginger, garlic chilli, coriander and cumin and stir fry a little taking care not to burn the spices. Add the tomatoes and their juice, the turmeric the cardamom the rinsed chickpeas and the rest of the stock or water Bring to a fast simmer the turn down heat and cook for 25 minutes, or until the aubergine feels soft but is still in cubes. Add the spinach and cook for a further minute or two till the spinach is wilted . Add the chopped coriander ,

Season with salt and pepper, and serve. This is even better made the day before you want to eat it . and good with a dollop of 0% fat yoghurt and some more fresh chopped coriander

linkainka Mon 25-Mar-13 19:40:23

Thanks for the recipe. Xx

BsshBossh Mon 25-Mar-13 20:04:55

Hello, just jumping in here from the main mega thread! Don't blame you for starting this smaller one - you're less likely to get lost here though if you need help from more experienced fasters then you should definitely try and post questions there.

I've just completed my 17th fast. I'm finding it easiest to try and push eating back as late as possible. I find that once I eat even something small it sets my appetite off and I struggle. If I don't eat until 2pm or better 5pm or, even better, evening meal time then I struggle less. Perhaps that's something you cam aim for?

BsshBossh Mon 25-Mar-13 20:05:35

*can not cam

VivaLeBeaver Mon 25-Mar-13 21:05:13

Yes when I fasted yesterday I had my weetabix as lunch at midday. I found it surprisingly easy to go till then without food.

Then today when I had breakfast I was starving an hour later.

So ill be fasting tomorrow.

Planning on a plain omelette at lunch time. Then for dinner ill be having a broccoli salad.

linkainka Mon 25-Mar-13 21:19:19

I like the idea of eating late. I might try that on Thursday for my 3rd fast xx

HousewifeFromArimathea Mon 25-Mar-13 21:25:53

I started this today. I have had about 5 cups coffee/tea with 1% fat milk.

A handful of grapes

River cobbler fillet and salad

i don't feel too bad actually, not as hungry as I thought I would. You probably shouldn't have milk upon tea but there is NO WAY I'm giving it up. It's practically skimmed anyway!

I am 5'4 and weigh at a guess nearly 11 stone. I'm a size 14 anyway. I'm not weighing myself, I'm hoping to go on clothes comfiness instead grin

linkainka Mon 25-Mar-13 21:48:58

Welcome to our little thread. When ate you fasting again? I fasted today too. It wasn't too bad. Looking forward to breakfast tomorrow tho

HousewifeFromArimathea Mon 25-Mar-13 21:56:37

Thanks for the welcome smile

I reckon Thursday for the next fast. I will see how I get on with it. I've never had to 'diet' before so it is a new experience for me!

I stopped smoking and drinking a couple of years ago and since then have discovered a penchant for chocolate digestives sad

Still I too am looking forward to brekkie tomorrow, bring on the cinnamon bagels I bought today!

linkainka Tue 26-Mar-13 06:57:40

Morning everyone. My first weigh in today since Saturday. After fasting yesterday I decided I'll check the progress. I've lost
2 kilos. That's about 4 pounds, right? gringringrin

VivaLeBeaver Tue 26-Mar-13 07:17:40

Well done on the weight loss. I haven't dared stand on the scales for about a year.

My fast day today hasn't started well. Felt so hungry when I woke up that I felt sick and have therefore had a banana.

HousewifeFromArimathea Tue 26-Mar-13 07:19:05

Wow that's great Lin!

I feel a bit thinner myself wink

MidnightMasquerader Tue 26-Mar-13 07:58:07

That's great Lin - well done. smile

I found my fasting day yesterday was OK, mainly because I knew it wasn't an overall pattern of deprivation and that I'd be able to eat again the next day.

I'm doing my second day tomorrow. For me, eating later in the day is key - I've never been a big one for breakfast so this is working in my favour now.

LittleFriendSusan Tue 26-Mar-13 08:58:18

Hi smile

I'm in my 4th week of fasting (fasted yesterday). Think I am seeing results in that I feel a lot less bloated. Not weighing myself yet: weighed the day before I started and took measurements etc, but want to give it at least a month before doing it again.

I too find it easiest to hold off as long as I can before eating, so generally have black coffee first thing and just liquids (black coffee, water, herbal tea) until around 2. Lunch generally either soup, boiled egg and salad or ryvita & Philadelphia. Then a 'normal' dinner. Veg chilli / tuna or salmon & stir fry veg / veg curry etc. We had the chicken Jalfrezi from the Hairy Dieters cook book last Friday with a chapatti which was nice.

I input my usual recipes into My Fitness Pal and have been pleasantly surprised at the calorie count. I think so long as calories earlier in the day are relatively low, you can have a decent meal in the evening. For me, it's been a case of cutting out / down on carbs - so large bowl of chilli & no rice / small wrap / sweet potato etc. I like the zero noodles to bulk out my stir fries.

I have been quite headachey over the last week, but I think I definitely need to up my fluids. 1st week or so, I was very good and drank lots, but have been a bit slack recently... I often get headaches mid-cycle anyway, so that could be playing a part too.

Not seeing the burst of energy people mention though! I find my fast day routine is dinner, soak in bath to warm me up (!),start to nod off so go to bed. DP and I were both in bed at 9.15 last night which is unheard of! I am looking a lot fresher recently too, but put this down to the extra sleep (I am generally a night owl and function on not very much sleep!!).

monster54 Tue 26-Mar-13 12:06:53

Hi Ladies,

Can I join you please? Also get lost in the big thread too....I enjoy reading but posting is a little pointless...

I'm going into my 5th week of this WOL and I'm 4.5lbs down so far. I wish it would move faster but I have been enjoying a couple of weekends too. So at least I haven't put on weight!!

I also find the longer I can go in the day without eating is better. I do allow myself tea and milk though.

Is anyone fasting today?

HousewifeFromArimathea Tue 26-Mar-13 13:25:42

Hello everyone, it's nice to hear of losses as it makes us newbies feel good smile

I'm not on a fast today, although I find myself not eating as much as I would of. Bonus.

I had sushi for lunch, some grapes and a peach. For dinner I am having a Moroccan chicken tagine curtesy of a waitrose mess up. Another bonus grin

HousewifeFromArimathea Tue 26-Mar-13 13:26:35

Courtesy? Curtesy? confused

linkainka Tue 26-Mar-13 18:01:36

Hi little friend Susan

Well done! Four weeks. That's amazing xx
I use fitness pal too buy only on fast days.
I seem to always go a little over 500 though. I like to have an options hot choc at the end of the day. That's about 40 kcal. It helps me sleep xx

linkainka Tue 26-Mar-13 18:04:20

Hi housewife xx I'm not fasting today either. I had a chicken curry ( homemade ) for tea.
Surprisingly, I didn't eat as much as I normally do and there is plenty left over for lunch tomorrow. This 'diet' is quite amazing. A few days on and my perspective on food is changing xxx

LittleFriendSusan Tue 26-Mar-13 19:43:41

I've also found I eat less on non-fast days. Can only be a good thing!

Linka - I log all weekdays on MFP, but don't generally bother at the weekend...

MidnightMasquerader Tue 26-Mar-13 20:18:17

I'm starting on my second fast day today (I'm in NZ so half a day ahead of you guys).

I'm slightly gutted as I had some marmite delivered in yesterday's shop - a huuuuge deal, as marmite has been out of circulation here for well over a year (2 years?!) due to the factory being pretty much destroyed in the Christchurch earthquake and it's finally come back on the shelves and I was looking forward to my first slice of toast so much!! Will just have to wait until lunch. grin

VivaLeBeaver Tue 26-Mar-13 22:52:56

I fasted today.

Had a broccoli and kidney bean salad for lunch, low fat natural yoghurt and lemon juice for dressing.

Then omelette at dinner.

Also had a banana and a pear.

Walked for 80 mins briskly this morning as well.

LittleFriendSusan Wed 27-Mar-13 09:04:02

Morning all smile

Fast day for me today. Having crispbread and Philadelphia with salad (lemon juice dressing) & cup a soup for lunch. Then soup again for dinner - have swapped fast days this week because of Easter etc, but didn't think it through when meal planning! Had scheduled in fish fingers & chips for tonight, which somehow I don't think I can get away with on a fast day! So soup it is grin.

Good luck to anyone else fasting today!

monster54 Wed 27-Mar-13 09:41:48

Hey girls,

Fasting today.....rough night with DC so I think its going to be fuelled mainly by nescafe...

I've got fresh M and S soup 240 cals for the whole lot!! So half at late lunch time and then the other half tonight with a slice of bread....

The rest of the cals will be going to support my need for copious amounts of coffee!

Going to try and go at least 16 hours...

LittleFriendSusan Wed 27-Mar-13 11:06:14

Hi monster - drink it black, no sugar = no cals!! I'm on my 4th cup this morning blush..

monster54 Wed 27-Mar-13 12:41:49

Ha ha!!! I'm going to have the jitters by the time bed time rocks up. Hope DC sleeps better tonight thank god for a short working week!!!

I try to go no milk but find it hard going so I alternate black and white with a sweetner!!

How is everyone else doing? Buckled and had my soup early...was v tasty a lot more satisfying than the crappy cuppa soups for around the same cals!!!

linkainka Wed 27-Mar-13 17:34:08

Hi
I'm fasting tomorrow which is Thursday. Anyone the same? Xx

MidnightMasquerader Wed 27-Mar-13 17:45:15

I fasted yesterday, and found it really tough. I had lunch at 12 and I think it's too early. I find the morning fine and don't get hungry at all, so need to push lunch back, I think.

Didn't help that I was baking up a storm for the arrival of my MIL today...!

HousewifeFromArimathea Wed 27-Mar-13 20:12:00

Yes I'm fasting tomorrow Link smile

Midnight how are you going to resist all your cakes??

Hello to everyone else too I'm on my phone so can't check back up thread very easily!

As I said fast tomorrow so no doubt ill be on here all day as I won't have the energy for anything else

Still kids had rare KFC tonight and I had.....omelette!!!

linkainka Wed 27-Mar-13 20:45:37

Good luck tomorrow housewife xx

I'm quite amazed at this really. On non fast days I eat well and often but I don't binge on biscuits or junk anymore.
Weird :/ xxx

VivaLeBeaver Wed 27-Mar-13 22:36:47

Ok so a non fasting day for me today.

I had weetabix.
Goats cheese omelette and chocolate brownie.
Banana
Cheese sandwich
Pear

I weighed myself for the first time in about a year. 13 stone2lbs which is v depressing.

linkainka Thu 28-Mar-13 05:40:39

Don't worry Viva. It will come off. Lets stick together and support each other. An early morn start for me and I'm fasting xxx

LittleFriendSusan Thu 28-Mar-13 07:15:38

Good luck today housewife & link smile

I struggled a bit last night: made lovely tomato & lentil soup & some cheese scones: had worked out I could have 1 but there were leftovers and I really wanted one!! Managed to resist, but it was tough...

Non fast today: just had lovely bowl of porridge with fresh fruit, Greek yoghurt & handful of mixed seeds. Leftover soup for lunch & fish fingers & chips for dinner!

monster54 Thu 28-Mar-13 08:00:29

Don't worry viva...it'll come off. I find setting myself small closer goals far more motivating than the 'big ultimate goal'....so by May I'd like to have lost 7lbs....

Rather than thinking oh god I've got another stone and half to go urrrggghhhh!!!

Fast day yesterday was a doodle surprisingly...I will struggle today though..eating day and I'm still tired...can see some comfort stuffing happening!!!

Does anyone else try to continue a 16 hour fast even on non fast days? So I ate at 8pm last night, hold off breaking the fast till 12 today???

HousewifeFromArimathea Thu 28-Mar-13 11:40:22

I AM STARVING

HousewifeFromArimathea Thu 28-Mar-13 11:40:40

linkainka Thu 28-Mar-13 12:25:01

newbiefrugalgal Sun 31-Mar-13 16:57:17

I'm starting on Tuesday. Just doing my planning now.

linkainka Sun 31-Mar-13 19:51:34

Good luck newbie. I'm fasting again tomorrow xx

MidnightMasquerader Mon 01-Apr-13 04:12:11

Ugh, I'm fasting today, Easter Monday, but not out of choice. I have a hospital apt tomorrow and have to fast today (and tomorrow morning until after the procedure at around 3/4PM).

I had to cut out all fibre yesterday, Sunday, which meant no Easter eggs and no hot cross buns... envy

Grim.

I am going to be ravernous by dinner time tomorrow.

I hope everyone else is having a lovely Easter. smile

Hi all
Im fasting today. Out of choice. It feels good after all the indulgences yesterday.
However, I went to the gym this morning. Swam 1 k and cycled 10.
Had a porridge but I'm starving now. About to have an apple and a few strawberries. And an options hot choc.
Am I breaking my fast? Xxxx

MidnightMasquerader Mon 01-Apr-13 19:12:00

Hmm, I would be wary of hard exercise on a fast day - unless you do that sort of thing every day, and today was a 'taking it easy' day?! smile

Exercise makes you hungry, and you do need the extra calories to to fuel yourself properly.

Fasted completely yesterday - going into another day of no eating until late arvo. Looking forward to food!!

As a bonus, I weigh precisely 1kg less today than I did yesterday!

linkainka Mon 01-Apr-13 20:10:10

Wow that's amazing. Have you much to lose? Xxx

monster54 Tue 02-Apr-13 15:35:58

Hey!!!

I was meant to fast yesterday and started off well but buckled being at home with all the choc and had a massive amazing dinner!!

Soooooo fasting today and going well. Just a quarter of a sarnie and highlights at around 2pm. Soup for dinner tonight...

I ate a ridculous amount at the weekend and feeling a strong sense of shame and disgust at myself....which is very motivation. Fast today has been well needed and craved for.....give my tummy a good rest from the rubbish....

Hope all the other fasters today are doing well!!

emmief77 Tue 02-Apr-13 20:07:17

I haven't got the book... In a dilemma whether to do slimfast or this?

MidnightMasquerader Wed 03-Apr-13 01:00:52

link, it's actually not that amazing; it's the result of an empty tummy and <grim> an empty bowel. envy (<<< that's a sick face, not an envy face!).

But in hindsight it was probably good to fast over two of the biggest feasting days of the year! I am enjoying my food today and will fast again tomorrow.

I have about 6-7kg to lose - not a huge amount so hopefully achievable.

emmie - I have never done slimfast - is that the protein shakes thing? I think I would get bored of the same old 'food' all the time, so have never been tempted by it. Plus, it's not a long term 'diet', so isn't sustainable. As such, as soon as you lose the weight and finish itmand go back to eting regular food, you're bound to put the weight back on. As far as I can see, this is more of a long-term thing. But... I'm no expert! smile

Wommer Wed 03-Apr-13 01:06:27

Hi all,
Can I join on here? I keep getting lost on the other thread - it moves so fast!
I've been 5:2 ing for about 4 weeks now.
Up until last week had been dropping a steady 2 lbs per week and then totally fell off the wagon over easter!
Weighed in this morning and had regained 3.5 lbs....angry
Although af is here at the moment so could be a bit of water retention going on too.
Have been fasting today (tues) (I use the calorie count app) and apparently have had 439 cals.
Am hoping to have dropped a bit by the morning!
Night all!

MidnightMasquerader Wed 03-Apr-13 04:12:25

Hi Wommer. smile Don't worry, I think most people are in the same boat! Good luck getting back on the wagon.

monster54 Wed 03-Apr-13 11:01:33

Welcome wommer....I have the same problem with the big thread!

I'm on week 6 and had lost around 5lbs but totally fell off the wagon at the weekend and I'm still too freaked out to get on the scales yet and asess the damage!!!

Urrggghhhh I know I'm going to have put all that back on......and I know it'll make me miserable so I'm just plodding on regardless and irgnoring the scales for a few more days.

Successful fast yesterday and going for a mini today and a full again tomorrow to try and undo the damage done......

monster54 Wed 03-Apr-13 11:03:57

emmie I was doing slimfast before this and wasn't particulary successful. Felt like I was on a diet and by the time weekends rolled round I would fall off the wagon...

I much prefer this allbeit a slower method of losing it means I can do the hardwork mon-fri and enjoying socialising with family at the weekend and enjoy a roast dinner....if just not having the pud!!

Wommer Wed 03-Apr-13 11:34:16

Thanks Midnight smile
Monster - have dropped 4lbs since yesterday morning!
So do not fear - the evil easter damage is reversible smile
I know alot of that was water due to starting af on Monday, and I know i normally go up 0.5 ish lbs the day after but even so.... grin

How much have you guys lost so far and how much until your target?

I've done about 8 lbs and have 9 to go.
Is my 30th and DS's 1st b'day at the end of may and I'd like to be at my pre preggers weight by then.

(May well carry on after that as for once I'd love to be really actually properly slim - never have really felt like that!)

monster54 Wed 03-Apr-13 13:16:58

Yes I do need to bite the bullet and get on with it really. I will go for it Friday, my usual weigh in day. I feel super bloated at the moment from the binging so I'm not in a good place for a bad weigh in. Hopefully after another fast the bloat will be down a bit!!

I've lost around 5lbs so far, although think it might look like more as I've had a couple of people notice and comment which has been nice.

I am pre-pregnant weight now which is great. As DC is 15 months urrgghhh! Although I wasn't happy with my weight when I fell pregnant. Ideally I would like to lose another 7lbs in 6 weeks....and hopefully another 7lbs on top of that before the end of August....

I find it comes off very slowly at the moment. Although at a 1lb a week I do have treats at the weekend and I think that keeps me going and means I can enjoy doing things with my family rather than being the one saying no all the time!!!!

emmief77 Wed 03-Apr-13 13:35:58

Have bought the Kindle version of the book smile

Am making carrot and coriander soup from BBC Good Food website right now smile

I have loads to lose, too scared to jump on scales and see how much blush

monster54 Wed 03-Apr-13 13:41:40

I know how you feel emmie I worked so hard to get that 5lbs off and I know the scales will upset me.....

Good luck with the soup, you will soon become so aware of the foods you can get for 500cals...and get the most out of them.

When are you doing your first day?

MidnightMasquerader Wed 03-Apr-13 18:32:51

monster - good luck with your three day fast. smile

I am fasting today and then that's it until next week.

I started this yesterday too. Started my fast at 3pm yesterday finished at 3pm today. I found it easier not to eat anything at all actually. Since 3 today, I've had some salted caramel easter egg (naughty), 2 satsuma's and a baked potato with chilli. I'll fast again tomorrow I think or Friday. It's was okay not as horrendous as I thought it would be. I didn't get headaches and I didn't feel faint. Still trying to decide whether morning to morning is best or whether I go from lunch to lunch - if that makes sense.

emmief77 Wed 03-Apr-13 19:49:16

monster

My first fast was today as follows:
Breakfast: Special K
Snack: Apple
Lunch: Nothing
Dinner: Pasta twirls mixed with baked beans and tuna. Muller light yoghurt.

Think I've got a bit confused though.. I posted this on main 5:2 thread, seems Special K is high in calories and I should keep away from pasta. Oops blush

Maybe I'll count today as a normal day, and have my fast day tomorrow. Got my carrot soup for tomorrow smile

monster54 Wed 03-Apr-13 21:40:58

emmie its your 500cals to do what you want with in 24 hours. I don't eat until late lunch, and then I have a substantial dinner. Just suits me. A lot of people don't have carbs on their fast day because carbs can trigger hunger.

I've got a weekend of a lot of social eating so hoping to minimise impact of this and my terrible binge at easter urrrgggghhhhhh!!!!

Fast day tomorrow!!

Fasting seeming a lot clearer now smile

MidnightMasquerader Thu 04-Apr-13 01:23:56

I have also worked out that having a (very) late, small lunch works for me, and then a small dinner on fasting days.

The sooner I eat, the sooner the hunger pangs kick in, whereas if I don't eat, they stay away for longer. Luckily I've never been a big one for breakfast, so this works for me.

For others, they're ravenous when they wake up and need to eat straight away!

I think it's a matter of starting, and then trial and error on the fast days, working out what is best for you. smile

Wommer Thu 04-Apr-13 09:04:20

Yup - same here.
The first time I did one I had a largish lunch and a small dinner... Got literally no sleep as it seemed to spark off a flight or fight thing (which I guess makes sense) and my brain would not calm down.
Felt like I'd drunk 20 coffees!

Now I have a small lunch - oxo cube soup with spinach, spring onion and garlic and then a decent dinner which is very protein heavy.

Am supposed to be fasting today but everything's all up in the air atm.
My FIL died on Tuesday and my DH is the only one around at the moment to help mil - the rest of the family are flying in over the next couple of days.
Am quite tempted to be as good as I can for the next week or so but leave the fasting.
It's going to be really hard to do any as there will be lots of family meals and visiting people. And food is a HUGEly social thing too.
Also cannot afford to be low in energy atm as amount others I need to be a support to DH.

Are there any benefits to doing sort of half fasts? Like having only 200 cals and then a normal dinner?
I could do that I think.

monster54 Thu 04-Apr-13 09:31:32

wommer hugs. Sorry to hear about FIL I would be kind to yourself the next few days....tough times ahead and DH will need you.

Ok well from what I've read there is benefits to having a 8 hour window of eating.

So for example today is my fast day. I finished eating at 10pm last night, I won't have any calories now until 2pm. This has given me a 16 hour fast. Which there are proven benefits of.

I follow this on non fast days during the week and then I let my hair down at the weekend and I don't count at all.

I'm exactly the same midnight if I eat breakfast it sparks a devil in me and I have no chance of sticking to 500cals for the day....

Whats everyone up to today? Fast day for me, couple of black coffees down and filling up my water bottle for the morning! I have chicken arribatta soup for lunch, Sainsburys whole pot 230cals....

Hmmmmmm then I'll have soup again for tea!!

ValentineWiggins Thu 04-Apr-13 18:06:09

Am I right in thinking its not just about doing 24 hours with only 500 cals - hubby thinks you can have early lunch one day, 500 cals for supper and breakfast then late lunch 25 hours after your early lunch? Surely you need to "miss " breakfast, lunch and dinner for it to count? Otherwise that seems far too easy! I was presuming lunch on Monday, then 500 cals until dinner Tuesday?

Valentine it's something in between. I posted this on the main 5:2 thread and some found it useful so I'll repost it here:

---

Reading through some of the posts from the new starters, I think many people are finding it hard to believe how staggeringly simple the ‘rules’ for this WoE are. Simply put, the ‘rules’ are:

On fast days eat no more than 500 kcal (600 for men). On non-fast days eat normally.

That really is it as far as rules go, and if your main objective for doing this is weight loss then whatever you eat, whenever you eat, if you’re following those two simple rules then you’re doing it correctly. Everything else that we discuss on these threads are tips which help us and research which has been done for the health benefits that also come with this WoE. If you find it too difficult to go down to 500 kcal on fast days straight away, there is no harm in starting out with a slightly higher allowance on fast days and easing your way down to the 500 kcal.

One of the things some people struggle with is what it means to eat ‘normally’ on non-fast days. Simply put, this is roughly the amount of food your body needs to stay the same weight, so not a diet portion and not a binge either.

When I started this WoE I wasn’t actually planning on using it to lose weight (I was highly sceptical and didn’t think it’d work but I’m always willing to give things a fair shot). I was just intending to use it to keep my weight under control while I was away studying in China for six months because I knew I loved the food out here and I wanted to be able to fit into the seat on the aeroplane when I flew home. grin So I didn’t restrict my eating on non-fast days at all because for me the whole point was to be able to eat all the yummy Chinese food I wanted and stay the same weight. But after 4 weeks I noticed my clothes were much looser so I went out and bought a cheap set of scales. I did start out on ADF though (because I hadn’t heard about 5:2 then) so it would have been pretty hard for me to eat so much on normal days that it would undo the fast days. After a week or so I also noticed my appetite got reset and I simply didn’t want to stuff myself silly anymore.

Others have a different experience to me. Some come from years of calorie restriction diets, so the eating normally on non-fast days seems a lot of food to be eating while trying to lose weight. Others have spent years overeating by quite a lot and find it a challenge to only eat a normal amount for their bodies. For both these groups of people it can be really helpful to work out your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE – there’s a link to a calculator in the OP) and then use MyFitnessPal (MFP) or some other method to track your calorie intake on normal eating days. You don’t have to do this for the rest of your life, just a few weeks of doing this can help you get a good idea how much food is the right amount and then you can stop calorie counting on your normal eating days and just relax into it. It’s also perfectly ok to average out your calories over your normal eating days, so if you’ve got an event coming up one day and you know you’ll be eating loads there’s nothing wrong with having a little less on your other normal eating days – just so long as your normal eating days average out at roughly your TDEE. I’m told MFP’s weekly tab is great for this. Another option for those doing 5:2 if you have a calorie laden few days coming up is to throw in an extra fast day if you can and if you’re feeling up to it.

Another thing people are curious about is the 16 hour and 24 hour fasting periods that get mentioned a lot on these threads. These are done for two reasons: 1) because many of us find that the later we start eating on a fast day the easier it is to get through the day successfully and 2) because one of the principles behind the health benefits that go along with this WoE is that giving your digestive system a complete break from digesting food helps the body go from grow mode to repair mode. Repair mode is where the health benefits come in. How long is optimum to fast? The short answer is we don’t quite know but studies seem to suggest a 16 hour fasting window will bring health benefits and that possibly more benefits come from longer periods of fasting such as 24 hours. Some on this thread achieve this by not eating from after dinner the day before a fast until either lunch time (for 16 hours) or dinner time (for 24 hours) on a fast day. This is not compulsory though. I had breakfast lunch and dinner for the first 4 months on this WoE, and I now usually have lunch and dinner, just occasionally doing the 24 hour proper fasting period.

A wise man once wrote: “He who walks with the wise grows wise”. This is certainly true with these threads. There is a wealth of information and research as well as personal experiences on these threads. If you don’t have time to read through all 13 of these main threads (who does?) I really recommend the links and tips thread (linked to in the OP). You’ll also see some other tips about what kind of foods to avoid on fast days etc. such as avoiding processed foods and really carby stuff like pasta or avoiding diet fizzy drinks. These tips are here to help us stick to the fast days and to benefit our health but they are not rules, so if you really like your fizzy pop then you can still have it. There are no banned foods on this WoE. When I started this WoE I had a two litre per day diet coke habit. Reading these threads and the links to health risks associated with aspartame (particularly the association with depression, which is a risk factor for me) I’ve now cut back to around a litre or two per week. All of us on here are experimenting with this and finding what works best for us and then sharing our experiences.

This is another post I put on the main thread which might help to answer your question too:

---

Can I fast for a 24 hour period say from 1pm to 1pm and just stick to my 5/600 kcal allowance in that time?

I’ve been giving this one a lot of thought. I’ve always thought that if you choose to do a 24 hour fasting period then this is meant to be a zero calorie fast for 24 hours with normal eating either side. This is another form of intermittent fasting.

Personally I’d say that if you choose to do 5:2 then, as others have said, it is helpful to think of a ‘day’ as a calendar day, not as a 24 hour period. If you need to think of it as a 24 hour period to get your head around it then think of it as midnight to midnight. (You don’t get to choose what time e.g. Tuesday starts, by the same token, you don’t get to choose what time a fast day starts only which days you are going to fast on IYSWIM). Like I said though, this is if you want to do 5:2 and keep it simple. There are other forms of intermittent fasting which are perfectly valid and can work.

Here’s an illustration (not intended to tell anyone what they should be doing, just an illustration) of why it might not be helpful to think of a ‘fast day’ as a 24 hour period which spreads over two calendar days:

Lady with a TDEE of 1750 kcal per day does 5:2 the simple calendar day way:
Monday fast day eats 500 kcal
Tuesday normal day eats 1750 kcal
Wednesday normal day eats 1750 kcal
Thursday fast day eats 500 kcal
Friday normal day eats 1750 kcal
Saturday normal day eats 1750 kcal
Sunday normal day eats 1750 kcal
Total calories consumed: 9750 kcal
Total calorie deficit for the week: 2500 kcal

Lady achieves this by having on normal days: 400 kcal breakfast, 500 kcal lunch, 600 kcal dinner and 250 kcal for drinks and treats; and on fast days by either having a 16 hour fast until lunch and then having 200 kcal for lunch and 300 kcal for dinner or by having a 24 hour fast and having a 500 kcal dinner.

Lady’s friend, who also has a 1750 kcal TDEE decides to give it a go, but decides to do a 24 hour fast from 1pm to 1pm:
Monday until 1pm 400 kcal breakfast plus 500 kcal lunch plus 100 kcal drinks total: 1000 kcal
Monday 1pm to Tuesday 1pm 24 hour modified fast 300 kcal dinner plus 200 kcal breakfast total: 500 kcal
Tuesday after 1pm lunch 500 kcal plus dinner 600kcal plus drinks and treats 150 kcal total: 1250 kcal
Wednesday normal day eats 1750 kcal
Thursday until 1pm 400 kcal breakfast plus 500 kcal lunch plus 100 kcal drinks total: 1000 kcal
Thursday 1pm to Friday 1pm 24 hour modified fast 300 kcal dinner plus 200 kcal breakfast total: 500 kcal
Friday after 1pm lunch 500 kcal plus dinner 600kcal plus drinks and treats 150 kcal total: 1250 kcal
Saturday normal day eats 1750 kcal
Sunday normal day eats 1750 kcal
Total calories consumed: 10750 kcal
Total calorie deficit for the week: 1500 kcal
(This also assumes that Lady’s friend is not tempted to eat a bigger lunch on the two days either side of her fast and is also not tempted to have more calories in treats either side of the fast)

Each week Lady gets in two 16+ hour periods of zero calorie fasting and reaps the health benefits and has a calorie deficit of 2500 kcal per week which sees her slowly but surely losing some weight.

Lady’s friend doesn’t get in any periods of zero calorie fasting except what every human being gets overnight while asleep and her calorie deficit is only 1500 kcal per week so she may not be getting the health benefits and she begins to get frustrated because it seems like she’s not losing weight very quickly.

I’ve been thinking about how the 24 hour modified fast could still work. If Lady’s friend did, say, 3pm to 3pm instead and so skipped lunch on Tuesday and Friday she could increase her calorie deficit to 2500 kcal, which is the same as Lady’s. If she also had her 200 kcal meal on Tuesday and Friday closer to lunch time instead of at breakfast then she could also get in two 16+ hour zero calorie fasts per week for the health benefits that come along with that.

So I think it is possible to do it.

The downsides though are: a) it’s more complicated that going from sleep to sleep and b) the fasting affects 4 calendar days per week to get in just two fasts whereas a sleep to sleep approach only affects 2 calendar days per week. It also may be true that for anyone who doesn’t want to calorie count at all outside of their modified fasts this approach may not work as these people (me included) may be inclined to eat too much on the morning and afternoon either side of the fasting period for it to work.

But I’m not by any means an expert and I’m just typing out my musings on this so if it works for you, please let us know!

…and if everything I’ve typed above seems way to complicated then ignore it completely and stick to this simple principle:

On a fast day eat no more than 500 kcal (600 for men) from waking up until going to sleep. On a non-fast day eat normally.

That’s it, it really is that simple.

Wommer - I'm so sorry to hear about your FIL (it's me, Masquerader, with a name-change smile ). If I were you, I'd take my foot of the pedal for a little while just to get through the next few days. This will all be here waiting for you when you're ready to start again, but having your head in the right place and sharing this time with your family is the main priority right now.

Nurse - thanks heaps for that info. smile

monster54 Fri 05-Apr-13 08:50:01

New low for me today! 5.5lbs in 6 weeks. I think I might have a bit of bounce in there as I've had a bit of a funny tummy!

Its not great but fact I've lost as opposed to the fact that had I not been on 5:2 all the bad weekends would have meant putting it on!!

So good to feel in control. Good luck any one fasting today!!

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper Fri 05-Apr-13 08:56:55

Yay, monster!

It's great to get through Easter, and not only not put on weight, but actually lose weight. smile

monster54 Fri 05-Apr-13 10:11:50

I know its totally crazy....fact that I can still socialise and enjoy food with family but still on a downward trend....

This WOL is with me for GOOD!!!

Wommer Fri 05-Apr-13 22:03:10

Nice new name Don smile

Monster - if you think you'd have gained over the same period of time, and you've actually lost that's a huge result! Well done!

Thanks for the reassurance guys smile am gonna take it easy for a couple of weeks.
As long as I don't back slide too much I'll be happy.

Have a good evening all!

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper Mon 08-Apr-13 09:07:05

Week 3 starting for me, fast day nearly over. I found it reasonably easy today - had a couple of cups of tea through the day, but didn't have anything to eat until 4-ish.

I have a rotten cold though, so maybe that has killed my appetite.

Hope everyone's had a good weekend.

monster54 Mon 08-Apr-13 15:13:05

Starting week 7....

Fast day today and found it fine, and I'm not at work which I thought would be harder. I've recently cut out sweetners from tea/coffee after some research on asparteme and its effects on insulin spikes and weight loss stalls...

I don't know if this has had an impact but my hunger pangs are much more manageable today.

Looking forward to a nice dinner tonight...I'll eat all my calories in one meal today, apart from a couple of cups of tea.

linkainka Mon 08-Apr-13 21:20:52

Hi. I'm back and planning on fasting on Wednesday and Friday this week. Did only one day last week due to being away with kids and staying at my moms.
She doesn't understand fasting.
And she feeds me constantly. Need to put myself back on the track.

How's everyone doing? Xxxx

monster54 Tue 09-Apr-13 11:49:33

All good here thanks!

Fasted yesterday and it was a breeze. Although had an upset tummy for the last few days so really didn't feel like eating much anyway....

Trying to have a nice healthy day today to undo some of the rubbish I ate at the weekend!!!

How is everyone else doing?

linkainka Wed 10-Apr-13 18:39:37

Hi all. I've been away for a week and haven't been fasting. Have eaten loads and feel like I've spoilt all. Help! Perhaps a little encouragement and motivation and a few tips? Xx

knittingnewbie Thu 11-Apr-13 08:37:36

Hi this is my first week fasting, I did Monday and yesterday. Woke up with a blinding headache though! Didn't feel well yesterday so wonder if its a bug rather than anything to do with fasting. Wasn't too hard, although I was very hungry at some points!! Feel really happy igot throught it though. The threads have been a great help so thank you!
