HeySoulSister Tue 19-Mar-13 09:53:27

Wow!!!

I'm off to google!

Im gonna give it ago......gona go on Google now!

catanddog Tue 19-Mar-13 10:08:53

yey.....say you're in!

Im in lol. I cant even get it up on you tube but i will later. Do you have to hold the squats for 2seconds? Just wonderin cause i heard you did.......that would wreck me!!

Oh I will! grin

When are we starting? Now?

Right did my first 50 smile My left knee clicked every time grin I'll be interested to see how I look after the 30 days, a few years back I did squats and my thighs started to look really good.

FreakoidOrganisoid Tue 19-Mar-13 10:53:25

Is it just normal squats or a variety of different ones? Do you use weights? I imagine 250 squats takes quite some time...

CooEeeEldridge Tue 19-Mar-13 11:01:01

I'm in! I've also signed up to a 10 push up, 50 sit up thing a day too so I'll add this in! My figure is ok, but my bum is massive!

Ooh I'm game for this. I may not be so keen after day 1 though grin

HeySoulSister Tue 19-Mar-13 11:20:31

I'm considering.....

Persuade me someone... I do them in shred but how should they actually be done?

I'm in! My fat arse needs the exercise

I'm in! I'm 13 weeks post-baby and didn't put any weight on while pregnant (GD) but have more than made up for it since and now have inner thighs that rub together. Off to google. Good luck everyone.

catanddog Tue 19-Mar-13 11:46:26

Good am delighted to have company! Planning on doing them during DD's nap, was going to do normal "feet shoulder width apart and hover bum over imaginary chair" type squats, but I've read that you can do fancy ones with weights or even jump squats....

Weights sound good, like on the shred isnt it? (vaguely recalls doing the shred... blush )

Maybe I should do the same amount of crunches or something too

catanddog Tue 19-Mar-13 12:08:57

was thinking of adding the crunches too - think doing squats with weights 100 times might kill me!

Ok normal weightless squats for me plus the same number of crunches!

Ok I'll do the crunches later, prob this eve as Ive just eaten and Im off out shortly. Tomorrow I'll attempt the squats with weights but I cant see that happening every time... grin

HeySoulSister Tue 19-Mar-13 13:07:10

Ok.... Just done 50 squats. Will see if I feel anything tomorrow.

Can't imagine doing 250!!!

HeySoulSister Tue 19-Mar-13 13:07:54

We doing crunches as well??

Is everyone doing crunches?

KatoPotato Tue 19-Mar-13 13:10:35

I'll join! Could get very boring otherwise!!

KatoPotato Tue 19-Mar-13 13:10:59

We could mix it up and add oblique crunches on alternate days?

ddsmellysocks Tue 19-Mar-13 13:20:27

I'm off to try

catanddog Tue 19-Mar-13 13:20:38

Mixing up crunches might keep it interesting or do 10 normal, 10 oblique crunches to each side, 10 double crunches, and 10 reverse crunches, and then keep adding to them.

Ahem - health and safety here everybody blush...watch your knees, especially when you are getting to later stages and doing loads of squats (and may lose form a bit). Make sure they stay behind your toes.

As you were...grin Good luck!

Attackofthefiftyfootwoman Tue 19-Mar-13 13:31:05

i'm in !! just did the first 50 and DS2 told me I was wierd (nothing like support hey? hmm)

up for doing crunches as well. My problem areas are my tum and my bum.

purples Tue 19-Mar-13 13:34:41

Sounds good to me, I really need some motivation to get fit and a little bit of company would be wonderful....

Not sure how my knees will cope, I'm off to do the first 50 now, hopefully I won't get stuck mid squat!

Just one question, I feel its a bit of a stupid question, but what is a reverse crunch??
And are you planning to do crunches on same day as squats, and have similar rest days?

Bye for now, just off to do the squats, catch you later

purples Tue 19-Mar-13 13:36:30

Thanks sleepwhenidie,
Will keep benhind toes..

CooEeeEldridge Tue 19-Mar-13 13:37:28

Done mine, great idea for a thread this, something quick and easy to fit in! I think you're right about mixing the crunches up and in keeps it interesting!

catanddog Tue 19-Mar-13 13:43:52

Done my 50 squats, and 50 crunches (did the 10 of everything version if that makes sense) wondering how on earth I'll ever be able to do the full 250 squats - but will do anything for buns of steel!

Purples - reverse crunches are these bad boys

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/exercises.asp?exercise=8

chirpchirp Tue 19-Mar-13 13:48:09

Yep, I'm in just what I need at the moment as making a concerted effort to loose (a lot) of weight now holiday in September has been booked.

Anyone brave enough to take measurements to see what effect all this effort has? Should I be measuring thigh, hips and the widest part (of my very wide) bum?

catanddog Tue 19-Mar-13 13:50:44

Good idea - will try and find a tape measure.....!

purples Tue 19-Mar-13 14:05:26

Thanks for the link catanddog, now I now my abdo muscles know what a reverse crunch is!

Well that's the first set of squats and crunches done, roll on tomorrow. Only tomorrow, I planning a trip to the loo before I begin, as after 25 squats I desperately needed the loo!

Not sure I'm brave enough for the tape measure business, but let me know which bit to measure and maybe, just maybe I'll get the tape measure out.

HeySoulSister Tue 19-Mar-13 15:42:28

How long did it take everyone? Did mine after a power walk ( I usually run) so I was warmed up.

Less than ten mins tho 250 might take longer!!

Do ya have to warm up first? thats probly a silly question but did anyone?

I didn't [embarrassed] but I have been doing housework so I'm counting that as enough warm up!

50 squats and 50 crunches done. Ouch!

HeySoulSister Tue 19-Mar-13 17:09:08

I ain't doing no crunches!! Do shred and I have completed c25k so run for 30 mins x 3 weekly!

ffswhatnow Tue 19-Mar-13 17:20:55

Oh Christ......

Looks a bit painful blush

<wanders off to find mahoosive bar of Galaxy>

Im not going to if it hurts tomorrow ill strecth it out lol. I'm so jealous people can go running, i used to love it and cant do it anymore sad so gentle squats and maybe crunches for me!

I just did it.....only managed 10 crunches tho! I dont feel like i'm doin the squats right even tho i watched a video on youtube before i did them.....am i the only one?

HeySoulSister Tue 19-Mar-13 18:09:18

inquisitivemummy ask that question again tomorrow... If your aching, you will know!!

purples Tue 19-Mar-13 19:27:44

Likewise, not sure I did the squats properly.

The video I saw said you go low down so your thighs are as parallel to the floor as possible, I went as low as I could but I don't think I went down quite far enough, I'm hoping that will get easier as I get fitter.

But I do need a bit of advice..... the video said to hold the squat for 10 seconds pulling in your thighs and bum; but another video didn't mention holding position. Don't think I could do 10 seconds for each, especially when we get to 250 squats!!! What do people recommend??

chirpchirp Tue 19-Mar-13 19:47:07

Done mine. I was able to do them continually for the 50, is that how you're suppose to do it or break it down into sets of say 25 when you get into the big numbers?!

catanddog Tue 19-Mar-13 22:36:47

Think you are meant to do them continuously even in the bigger numbers (eeeekkkk)

Bugsylugs Tue 19-Mar-13 23:56:40

I'm in. Just found this thread was going to start tomorrow but reading through got me out of bed. Dh did wake and ask if I was ok! Will add in crunches tomorrow

BistoBearWithBaublesOn Wed 20-Mar-13 00:10:46

I'm in! But I'll be starting tomorrow as I'm in bed already! Shall do squats and crunches smile

PeachyPossum Wed 20-Mar-13 06:23:15

I'm in, I'm 6 weeks out from open abdo surgery so finally allowed to do gentle exercise (this includes housework according to my surgeon, thanks for that) squats should be ok shouldn't they as they aren't stomach focused?

catanddog Wed 20-Mar-13 09:23:24

Day 2 done! Feeling a bit achey now.....

HeySoulSister Wed 20-Mar-13 09:27:53

Bit achey this morning!! Must be doing them right

purples Wed 20-Mar-13 10:10:26

I can feel the muscles aching a little, so hopefully did something right yesterday!
So today it's 55 squats, and 55 crunches (11 normal, 11 oblique crunches to each side, 11 double crunches, and 11 reverse crunches).
It's all fun, fun, fun...

Hi PeachyPossum, smile It's great you're feeling up to joining in, nothing like some like minded people for a bit of motivation. But you definitely need to be very careful if you've recently had abdo surgery. This builds up to 250 squats in a very short period of time. So if you do decide that squats are OK and want to join in, maybe you need to build up the number of squats at a much gentler pace??

Day 2 done! Phew.

EmilyAda Wed 20-Mar-13 10:25:40

I'm in just going to start now
startd doing crunches monday before i saw this
good luck everyone
very appley to look at hope to be more celery after this!!!

Ilovesunflowers Wed 20-Mar-13 10:30:55

I'll give this a shot. Could do with some a lot of toning.

PeachyPossum Wed 20-Mar-13 12:47:15

Purples, I think your right. I will stick to 50 a day for the first set, then increase to maybe 70 for the second and just stick to a gentle increase. I can run and swim after the first week of April but we have a beach holiday booked end of April so I want to look a little better in my shorts and bikini!! Not much I can do about the tummy and scars so will make the best of the rest!!

I am having to check the correct way of doing them, I think this mornings may have been wrong!

Attackofthefiftyfootwoman Wed 20-Mar-13 14:49:52

day 2 done - feeling it more in my thighs than bum though am I doing it wrong?

Attack- im feeling it in my thighs more than my bum, i watched a YouTube clip to see if i was doin them right, my thighs r hurtin so i guess i am.

Just did the sqats and managed 30 crunches tonight hopefully 50 tomorrow!!

Bugsylugs Wed 20-Mar-13 23:02:05

Done today's squats also feeling it in thighs.
Thanks catandog

HeySoulSister Wed 20-Mar-13 23:25:46

Day two, done!

catanddog Thu 21-Mar-13 07:46:45

Day 3 done! Did all the squats and crunches, ouch my thighs, but rest day tomorrow which I'm looking forwards to.

Keep up the good work everyone....

I've not been able to do the squats as I've found I have very short hamstrings and I can't squat, at all. blush I need to speak to a physio..

purples Thu 21-Mar-13 08:57:33

Sorry to hear about your hamstring problem wewereherefirst, what about trying to carry on with crunches?

Done mine for today and really feeling the effect of those crunches and to a lesser extent in my thighs.
Good thing is I'm getting better at the squats, as muscles are getting used to it, I'm able to go lower.
It may just be psychological, but I can feel that the bum/thigh muscles are already better...

So tomorrow is a rest day, and then on Saturday it goes up to 70. (OMG 70!)

Didnt do any yesterday for various reasons however I did do loads of brisk walking. Was agony using my thighs yesterday - going downstairs, getting in the bath etc! So have just done 60 for today, and instead of resting tomorrow I'll do them to make up for yesterday off. Havent done any crunches yet tho... will prob do them this afternoon or evening.

Done! Ouch. My thighs, bum and tummy are sore!!

MazzR Thu 21-Mar-13 13:47:08

Oooh can I join?! Ill start today!

Day three done.....managed 53 crunches tonight was so funny as DS whos 3 was doin them beside me lol!

Purples - i can feel my thigh an bum muscles gettin better already glad im not the only one!

Bugsylugs Thu 21-Mar-13 23:39:57

Day 3 done. Thoughts aching and on to tonight's set could feel it on the bum.?

HeySoulSister Fri 22-Mar-13 08:02:47

Day 3 yesterday... I found myself in the bathroom doing them

Made myself go far enough down by hovering over bath edge for each squat... Making sure my thighs brushed it on each squat down... I'm tall so was perfect height

Not aching much as had completed 30 min run before I did them

purples Fri 22-Mar-13 08:26:35

Day 4, REST DAY!!!
MazzR, did you decide to join in? ...This is a great thread that catanddog started.

Morning! Im not resting today to make up for not doing them on weds. Ive just done 65 squats, 65 'bicycle' crunches (find these the best ones for me, can feel it in my stomach already!) havent been using weights though, nor have I done any press ups.

Rest day grin

I can really feel it in my thighs this morning!

MazzR Fri 22-Mar-13 10:04:01

Ya I did my 50 squats yesterday. Will start the crunches today too. Great thread alright. One question, do we have to hold the squats for a few seconds or just up and down,up and down lol?

CooEeeEldridge Fri 22-Mar-13 13:55:15

Had an accidental rest day yesterday so did day 3 today, well done everyone!

MazzR Fri 22-Mar-13 13:57:06

Day 2 done! :-)

catanddog Fri 22-Mar-13 15:49:00

So am on rest day today, and it could well be my imagination but my bottom looks better (firmer). 70 tomorrow......

HeySoulSister Fri 22-Mar-13 22:18:11

70?? Blimey!

purples Sat 23-Mar-13 13:29:01

I'm trying to holding the bum/thigh squeeze for a count of 2.
smile just off to do my 70 now....Hopefully I'll still be smiling afterwards...

70 done. My legs are really feeling it now. I'm not sure I'm setting any differences yet though

catanddog Sat 23-Mar-13 19:22:09

70 done too, didn't find it too bad, although the crunches weren't fun!

Bugsylugs Sat 23-Mar-13 22:59:19

70 done am just going up and down no holding. Will on the next 30 days

HeySoulSister Sun 24-Mar-13 10:28:22

Did my 70 last night...

So how many of us are left!? grin

LillethTheCat Sun 24-Mar-13 10:38:08

Wish I had seen this thread earlier so I could have joined in at the same time. I might however do this next week, is there a 30 day sit-up challenge, its my tummy area that needs work.

<goes off to google>

purples Sun 24-Mar-13 10:48:16

Ended up only doing the squats yesterday, then was interrupted by DD so didn't get a chance to do any crunches.

I think we're on day 6 now, so plan to do 75 squats and hopefully 75 crunches.

Earlier in the thread sleepwhenidie said to keep behind toes for the squats, I've found thats a great piece of advice, as I sometimes find myself wanting to lean forward and keep having to correct my positioning, I also finding it useful to have arms out infront for the squat.

I dread wonder what 250 will feel like!

purples Sun 24-Mar-13 10:50:39

Also read that you should keep weight on your heels and not on your toes, again thats helping me to stop leaning forward.

Good luck everyone with the exercises today.

HeySoulSister Sun 24-Mar-13 11:51:58

Yes you should push back up through the heels

I'm getting a bit breathless now doing them. Plan to do shred tonight first so I'm more warmed up. Then 75!

I'm having to do another rest day today sad my legs are really stiff and couldn't do 7 squats never mind 75, will have to pick up later this eve or more likely Timorese

Tomorrow even

Did my 70 yesterday, tbh i still dont think im doin it right, could someone let me no how they r doin it please? Just so i no.

Still not good at the crunches lol maybe ill do 20 squats then 20 crunches an so forth see how it goes

catanddog Sun 24-Mar-13 19:43:17

Did my 75 today, and 75 crunches too, wasn't too bad!

inquisitive imagine you are lowering yourself to hover over a nasty loo seat to do a weesmile, "sit" backwards/down with your feet flat on the floor. At its fullest point you would end up squatting right down with your bum almost touching the floor and calves/back of thighs touching but just go as low as you can. Then push back up through your heels to standing straight and repeat.

Imagine your head is running up and down a vertical cord, so very little forward/backward movement. And as previously said, don't let your knees go forward over your toes.

Also, plenty of YouTube clips to demonstrate I'm sure...

Bugsylugs Sun 24-Mar-13 23:00:41

Just done my 75 am going down to thighs nearly parallel with the floor. Have a lot of wobble space so am not sure I will see a difference. Not done crunches aim is to do the 30 days then start again with run hoes and maybe weight.

Am also getting breathless

Bugsylugs Sun 24-Mar-13 23:01:21

Oops crunchier not run hoes

purples Mon 25-Mar-13 08:14:48

Day 7, so I'm going to try for 80 today.

I think I'm in the correct position for the squats, thanks for the brilliant advice sleepwhenidie.
I know I'm probably still not going down quite as far as i should, but as my muscles get used to this exercise I'm getting a little lower each day.

Tomorrow is a rest day smile, but I still plan to do some crunches, as I only did some squats on Sat and missed out the crunches.

HeySoulSister Mon 25-Mar-13 08:20:13

I'm off to a boot camp fitness thing in the park today. Regardless of snow!

Will do my 80 when I'm home and warmed up!!

As long as you are going down as far as you can under control it will be working purples smile. Form is everything.

HeySoulSister Mon 25-Mar-13 11:52:36

Boot camp was fun .... Jumping squats!! Lol

Anyway, I'm lost, is today a rest day. Last night I did 80 squats for some reason

Well I didnt do any over the weekend, today Ive done 80 squats and 80 crunches. I'll prob keep doing them through the week and use a day at the wknd as a rest day grin

catanddog Mon 25-Mar-13 13:44:51

Done my 80 squats, saving my crunches for later! Keep up the good work everyone....

purples Tue 26-Mar-13 07:08:47

Welcome to Day 8, rest day.

I plan to do the crunches I missed out on Saturday.
I can definitely feel a difference in my bum/thighs already, but I think that's mainly because I'm not very fit, and so a little exercise makes a difference. wink

purples Tue 26-Mar-13 07:12:39

Just noticed it jumps to 100 squats tomorrow!!!

Did my 100 crunches and squats this morning but forgot to check in blush

McPie Tue 26-Mar-13 15:55:16

Oooooh just found this and it looks good. I love Metafit and this will make a great addition to my Tough Mudder training.
Have found an Ab one with sit ups, push ups and planks as well as one with squats and burpees (googled 30 day squat challenge images).
Just remember when you squat to keep your chest up and eyes constantly on one spot on the wall and knees behind toes at all times, my boxfit instructor stuffed his knee up recently showing bad squat form. I wouldn't worry too much about doing them continuously just as long as you get through them.

Hello ladies!

sorry havent been joining in for a while, havent done it since my last post I had to get a cold coagulation(abnormal cells burnt off the cervix) yesterday so i'm gonna out it off till the pain goes away but ill keep up with the thread. Hopfully i'll be able to catch up with yas all!!

thanks for the advice sleepwhenidie I hahvent tried it yet but will when i start again.

keep up the good work everyone!!

dawnpreview Tue 26-Mar-13 18:09:01

Only just seen this, but I'd like to join you. Did 50 squats today, will try the crunches as well from tomorrow.

MazzR Wed 27-Mar-13 10:28:36

Did day 6 today. 75 squats. All good!! :-)

EmilyAda Wed 27-Mar-13 11:24:17

I'm on day 8 ahh it hurts i'm doing crunches too does this work? I'm loosing enthusiasm already blush help keep me moving please!!

EmilyAda Wed 27-Mar-13 11:25:34

I know this is rest day!!!

purples Wed 27-Mar-13 11:58:52

It's day 9 for me, so I'm off to do my 100 squats and crunches.
I can hardly believe i'm saying that, a couple of weeks ago that would have been impossible but as this build up the number of squats, I've found it do able so far.

See you all tomorrow!

HeySoulSister Wed 27-Mar-13 12:59:06

100 for me too.... Will do them later!!

CooEeeEldridge Wed 27-Mar-13 14:34:31

Found them quite ok so far, felt the step up to 100 though!!

dawnpreview Wed 27-Mar-13 19:33:00

Done my 55, not too bad so far! Not done any crunches yet, but did swim for 35 minutes this morning.

catanddog Wed 27-Mar-13 20:14:25

Completed 100 squats and crunches, felt really out of puff after those squats mind!

dawnpreview Wed 27-Mar-13 20:46:50

Well I just managed 20 crunches! Will see if I can manage a few more tomorrow!

purples Thu 28-Mar-13 08:25:26

Day 10, so it's 105 for me today.

Yesterday, i did my 100 crunches, but then in the middle of doing the squats i was interrupted by daughter. So i only managed 81 squats.

dawnpreview Thu 28-Mar-13 18:53:41

Did my 60 squats and definitely felt my legs burning a bit today.

Bugsylugs Thu 28-Mar-13 23:03:31

Only did 50 yesterday. Today did not check how many quays I was meant to do oops did 110. Did them quickly I think I need to slow down to get more benefit .

purples Fri 29-Mar-13 19:26:07

Day 11,
It 110 today, and tomorrow is a rest day.
My muscles are definitely looking forward to a day off tomorrow. Can really feel it in my thighs, but then thats what is supposed to happen!

marisol21 Fri 29-Mar-13 22:11:39

Im on the 4th day my rest day is it normal for my legs to hurt so.much in which i can barely sit down?? Someone plz answer me i really want to.keep these challenge goingsmile

purples Sat 30-Mar-13 10:36:50

DAY 12, rest day for me.
Hi mariso, Yes i have found it very uncomfortable and ached , probably because my original fitness level was very very low, but i found sitting down OK, actually i found sitting restful.
People seem to have had a varying amount of problems, but everyone seem to have some aches. Earlier in this thread wewereherefirst had problems due to very short hamstrings and had to give up.
I'm no expert, but are doing the technique correctly?? At the start my technique was very poor and a bit wobbly, but it's improved a lot. Yeasterday i had problems doing 110 squats in a row and ended up taking a few minutes break at the half way mark.
There was good advice about techique previously on this thread from sleepwhenidie: "imagine you are lowering yourself to hover over a nasty loo seat to do a wee, "sit" backwards/down with your feet flat on the floor.
and good advice from McPie too: "Just remember when you squat to keep your chest up and eyes constantly on one spot on the wall and knees behind toes at all times"

inquisitivemummy treatment sounded painful, hope its healing well.

I'm not sure how many of us there are left...

marisol21 Sat 30-Mar-13 16:06:42

Thankyou purples ill try all your advice at some i do want to give up but than im likeno.i made a promise so i have to keep going smile its just when im going down its just the burn that i get wow its to intense lol almost makes want to cry lol but im not giving up smile

dawnpreview Sun 31-Mar-13 10:01:33

Day 6 for me, done my 75 squats. I am finding I can get a bit lower already, but still wobble a bit sometimes as I am coming up again. Definitely feeling my legs burning though! I am determined to keep this up, I am usually very good at starting these things but usually give up after a few days.
I am going away at the end of may though, and would love to get into my size 14 jeans by then- currently in a 16.

purples Sun 31-Mar-13 15:11:39

Day 13 for me, so I'm planning to do 130 squats today and 130 crunches, I really can't believe I'm doing this!!! I'm really finding it good motivation being on this thread, otherwise I think I would have given up by now.
My calf muscles are feeling sore today, but hopefully I'll be able to do all the squats. I'll probably split the squats into a couple of groups with a few minutes rest between them, just to make it a bit easier.

Ive had a few days off as I had a sickness bug and felt so grim sad Think I should be doing 130 or so today, will crack on later!

purples Mon 01-Apr-13 14:31:13

DAY 14 for me, so it's 135 squats today and 135 crunches.

Did 130 squats yesterday and had to have a break in the middle. But didn't get a chance to do any crunches.
Can really feel it in my calf muscles, I think maybe, I should have warmed up better yesterday!

GuyMartinsSideburns flowers sorry to hear you've not been feeling well, hopefully soon you'll be up to it soon.

Bugsylugs Mon 01-Apr-13 20:46:38

managed to muck up my days. Did 110 again today not doing rest day tomorrow as did one of those the other day and yesterday did 50 or so. Anyway brushed myself off and got going properly again today feel really pleased as nearly thought will do it tomorrow.

So thanks for this thread and getting me back on track.

Guymartinsideburns hope you are feeling better.
Keep it up purples you are going great.

purples Tue 02-Apr-13 10:00:40

DAY 15 for me, so that's 140 squats and 140 crunches. Today is my half way mark to day 30. I am was so unfit. I really couldn't have contemplates doing 140 of anything last month, so this 30 day squat program has really worked for me, given me a bit of motivation and company. Lets just hope I can carry on for another 15 days, and beyond!

I'm now doing a bit of a warm up before I start (even if it is only walking round the house, doing a few stretches and going up and down the stairs!)
I've also started doing some stretches when I finish.
Only did 110 squats yesterday, as I was interrupted by children, and just couldn't be bothered to finish them later didn't get a chance to do them later. Never mind, I don't think in the overall scheme, it will make much difference, the important thing is to do something on a regular basis and to keep the momentum going.

Tomorrow is a rest day for me. smile

Thanks for the kind words smile Ive been lazy, I lost all motivation and Im feeling a bit low. Anyway Ive just done 50 squats, then the kids decided to come down and want breakfast so I'll do the rest shortly! Will attempt the same in crunches too. No idea what day Im meant to be on but what the hell, Ive certainly had enough rest days blush

purples Wed 03-Apr-13 12:00:44

DAY 16 for me.

Should have done 140 yesterday, but somehow just didn't fancy doing them didn't get round to doing it.
Never mind, today was supposed to be a rest day, so I'll just swap the days around, so in the long run really should make any difference. I may only be half way through this 30 day squat challenge but I can definitely feel a difference in my muscle tone already.

purples Fri 05-Apr-13 14:04:51

I just turned round and everyone seems to have disappeared!!! confused

Any way, Day 18 for me, done my 155 squats for today, plan to do the crunches later.

Anyone else out there....

Bugsylugs Fri 05-Apr-13 21:05:43

Hi purples I am here done 140 today as cannot remember how many I did yesterday but think it was not the full complement.

Not sure whether to rest tomorrow as I keep mucking up but do I need to rest?

purples Sat 06-Apr-13 08:58:26

Hi Bugs, good to know there are a few of us left, I think Guymartinsside burns is still in too, anyone else left??? Come on girls, you know it's good for you...

As to rest days, yes I've included them, but I've often had to swap them around as I've missed a few days. My calf muscles felt very sore one day, and decided to rest the following day just to let them recover a little, so I think my muscles have benefited from resting every few days. I don't think it really matters if you take 30 days or longer for this challenge, it's just good to set a goal for motivational purposes, it's given me something to aim for and got me doing exercise on a regular basis. That's got to be a good thing. I've found the rest days useful, it's meant that if I skip a day, I can just juggle days around. If I do end up taking more than 30 days, it doesn't really matter, what maters to me is that I feel fitter at the end of it all.
Its Day 19 for me so 160 squats for me!
Did the squats yesterday, but had to skip the crunches, just didn't get time to fit them in with the kids being off school. Hope to do both squats and crunches today.

Have fun today. smile

purples Sun 07-Apr-13 13:52:58

Day 20, rest day for me, so I'm off to make a cup of tea! brew

Movingforward123 Sun 07-Apr-13 19:42:56

Hi, ive just seen this thread, I'm thinking about doing it, I just want to ask a few questions if thats ok?

How long does it take roughly each day?
What difference has it made to your body so far?

I could do with toning my bum and legs but I don't want my thighs to get bigger. I really need to tone my tummy and hips more then anything but crunches hurt my back.

How long are the crunches taking you each day?

It all sounds like a great idea smile

dawnpreview Sun 07-Apr-13 21:58:25

I'm still here smile
Day 13 for me, so did my 130. If you had told me 2 weeks ago that I would be able to do 130 squats, I would have laughed at you! It has surprised me that I have been able to keep it up. Still can't imagine what 250 will feel like though!

purples Mon 08-Apr-13 12:20:55

Day 21 for me, so its going to be 180 squats today.
dawn Great your keeping it going! I'm similar, no way could I have done this may squats, I think building them up slowly has allowed my muscles to cope, at the start I couldn't go down far enough (and I didn't want to force it) but gradually I've gone down further, I now don't wobble as I do them and technique now is so much better than a few weeks ago. I'm hoping to get to 250, and as I go on the idea becomes achievable in my mind.

moving forward, I'll time myself today and let you know, but timing will depend on the type of squats you decide to choose. Some days I just do the squats fairly quickly and some days it takes a little longer as I hold them for a few seconds squeezing in my thighs and bum. For todays squats I'll probably do a mix of both. I know earlier in the thread someone suggested doing them with weights. It really up to you what type of squat you choose.
I was very unfit beforehand, so any exercise would make a difference for me! I can definitely feel a positive difference after 3 weeks, there is much better muscle tone. I didn't measure myself at the start, so can't give exact measurements, but I will say that I feel better and clothes seem to fit better.

purples Tue 09-Apr-13 13:59:40

Day 22, so I've done my 185 squats.

Hi moving forward, what have you decided, are you going to give it a try?? It took me about 14 minutes today to do 185 squats, could have done them faster/slower if I had wanted to, really depends on what technique used. I did them all in one go today, but in the past i've sometimes I've broken them down into a couple of groups. Hope thats of some use.

dawnpreview Tue 09-Apr-13 21:38:28

Done my 140. Found it quite tough today, and my legs were killing me by the end. Rest day tomorrow- think I need it!

NoSnowJustSand Fri 12-Apr-13 06:48:05

I've been following the thread and thought I'd have a go, after all what's to lose? My big bum/thighs perhaps? Anyway I've done my 50 for today. Any other new starters?

purples Fri 12-Apr-13 11:30:21

Its supposed to be Day 25 with 220 squats for me today, but I hit a slight problem, and didn't manage any over the last 2 days. ( anyway, one of the days was a rest day , so that doesn't really matter), I don't think losing the odd day here or there will make too much difference, it's more I want/need to keep the motivation going, and i think if i skip too many days, i may just stop altogether. And I really want to keep going.
So I'm planning to do 210 today, then I will back on track tomorrow (day 26) if i do 225 squats.
I'm now thinking when i get to the end, I might (just might) do the whole thing over again with weights!!! I think i may have gone mad.
Hi no snow, go for it.
How is everyone??? smile Keep it going....

dawnpreview Fri 12-Apr-13 15:57:24

Day 18 for me. Just had 2 rest days and lost count a bit, so actually did 160 today instead of 155! Oh my god my legs are burning now. I am so determined to keep this up though. Well done to everyone who is still doing it.

Movingforward123 Sat 13-Apr-13 10:44:08

Purples - thank you for timing yourself grin I was going to do it but I've recently sprained my ankle very badly! I can walk now but I didn't realise that doing squats I would feel it on my ankle!

So for now i won't be doing it, but i am watching with interest and will do it when my ankle is more flexible! grin

purples Sun 14-Apr-13 15:19:43

Day 27, did 230 squats this morning!!!!
As the numbers build up, I can't do them all in one straight session, finding I'm having to take a little break between groups. Nearly there, only 3 more days to go. Then it's big decision time: WHAT NEXT? This challenge has been so good for me, I really want to keep the momentum going.
Finding it harder to build up the number of crunches, finding them a little harder than the squats. Only did the squats this morning, going to try to fit in the crunches later this afternoon.

dawnpreview Sun 14-Apr-13 22:02:18

Well done purples, 230 must be a killer! I found the same today doing 160, that I had to stop every so often. But I did get there in the end. Was meant to be a rest day today, but I am finding it harder to get back into it if I have a rest day.

CooEeeEldridge Mon 15-Apr-13 04:29:59

I'm still here too! Keep forgetting how many I should be doing, did 210 today which is about right I think? How about a push-up one next???? Awful I know!

dawnpreview Mon 15-Apr-13 07:58:29

I have been thinking about what to do next as well. I can't do push ups at all sad I have also been trying low carb for the last week, and have lost 4lbs! I will definitely be keeping that up. May start the shred again once kids are back at school and I have more time. I will also be going swimming most days. Need to shift as much as possible before I go away in 6 weeks!

purples Mon 15-Apr-13 17:49:24

Day 28, supposed to be a rest day , but have done 230 squats anyway, as I had to swap days around a few days ago and don't want a break in momentum. Only another 2 days to go!

CooEee I've very sad to say that I don't think not I could manage even one push up! So not sure that is the next challenge for me. But I really want to do something to keep the momentum going, question is what??? The squat challenge has been perfect for me, as its given me an achievable goal to build up to, over a month.
Dawn I've a very stupid question, what exactly is the shred?? I've heard it mentioned before, but never been quite sure if its a diet/ set of exercises/ DVD or combination of all of theses. Must admit like you I'd love want to shift a bit of weight for the summer, so think I need to start a diet of some sort and combine it with exercise. The name "shred" strikes terror into my soul does make it sound very serious, especially as I'm not the fittest of people, to be quite honest I'm not sure I'd be up to doing it. What level is the shed aimed at? Is it for the already super-fit or could a slightly saggy middle aged mum of two survive it! wink

dawnpreview Mon 15-Apr-13 22:28:34

Have a look on YouTube purples. Jillian michaels 30 day shred. There are 3 levels and you do each level for 10 days. It is hard, and I never got past level 2 when I did it last year. But I was seriously unfit, and am a very saggy middle aged mum! Each level is only 20 minutes, so doesn't take up too much time either.

Movingforward123 Tue 16-Apr-13 20:32:27

Purples and dawn - well done grin I'm still watching with interest while my ankle is healing grin

So what difference have you noticed? Are you thighs any slimmer? Or just more tonned?

purples Tue 16-Apr-13 20:56:24

Day 29, did my 240 squats and 240 crunches today, only one day to go!!!
I've had a problem keeping up with the crunches, but dragged an old abdo-roller out --from behind the cob-webs--of the garage; and that has made the crunches easier, otherwise don't think I could have done so many crunches.
Muscle tone is so much better than at the start. Didn't measure myself, so can't actually say if thighs are slimmer (but I think clothes fit better, so it seems to have had some good effect). I certainly feel much better for it.

Movingforward123 Tue 16-Apr-13 22:11:10

Wow well done purples! I would never be able to do 240 crunches! I hate crunches and it kills my back

dawnpreview Wed 17-Apr-13 12:56:18

Day 22 for me, and I am seriously lacking in motivation! Have had awful period pains for the last couple of days, so that is not helping at all. I did manage 20 mins on the eliptical yesterday as well as the squats, but today I have no energy at all sad
I am very impressed at all the crunches purples. No way could I do that many.
I didn't take any measurements at the start, but my jeans are feeling a bit baggier round the bum.

purples Thu 18-Apr-13 11:50:50

Didn't do any squats/crunches yesterday, but finally reached the goal of 250 squats today!!! grin Doing the crunches later this afternoon.

Hi Dawn, I looked at the shred on line, and to be quite honest I think it's a little too much for me at the moment. I'm trying to set a fitness goal that is an achievable challenge and I think in my current fitness state that i'd probably give up on the shred. I want to keep my enthusiasm & motivation going, so I need to be realistic as to what I will able to do. But I may look at the shred in a couple on months time, for the final lead up to summer holidays! Currently looking through my collection of fitness DVDs (its very sad that my collection of fitness DVDs are in as new condition! sad) Just got to decide which to do.
Thinking of doing one session from a DVD each day and at the same time also doing the squat/crunch challenge all over again. So, for me its back to day 1 tomorrow. CooEee, I think I may have a go at the odd press-up, but it may just be one a day!

movingforward I'm finding the abdo roller great for the crunches, it supports my neck so no back problems, and then I use my abdominal muscles to pull myself up. So much easier than regular sit-ups as less stress on neck/back.

NoSnowJustSand Sat 20-Apr-13 04:31:48

Day 9 for me today. Finding it fairly easy to stay with it and have been adding 30-60 minutes of additional exercise every day. I have the 30 day shred so might get going with that again this week.

Keep going everyone!

Castlelough Sat 20-Apr-13 21:13:13

Is it okay to join this challenge at this stage?
Was thinking of starting tomorrow... smile

Movingforward123 Sat 04-May-13 12:34:30

So how are you all getting on? I really want to start this challenge but not sure if my leg is ready yet! hmm I don't want to cause it any more damage!

Leverette Mon 06-May-13 10:16:06

It's great! Only day 3 for me but god I can really feel my bum/thigh muscles when I walk. Have also restarted shredding and low carbing (THANKS BIWI!) and hoping to see a big difference by the end of the month.

I like the fact it's something I can do without needing to get changed, at a convenient time, like whilst watching the tv news for example.

Velve Thu 11-Jul-13 12:03:20

Hello, can I join in at this stage.
I thought about doing the normal squat challenge but I didn't want to overtrain just the same muscle groups and I've been known to have repetitive strain injuries before, sooooo...
I thought I could join in with this one instead:
www.fitsugar.com/30-Day-Squat-Challenge-30806625
as it trains separate groups of muscle for a full lower body toning.

Would anyone like to start on this with me. I will start once my son is having his second nap of the day.
