Aiming to lose half a stone, with 3 rules only

I've decided to try to log my attempts to lose half a stone, and hopefully keep it off. I'm currently 9:13, and I reckon that I should be closer to 9:7.

Background:
I was inspired by the Dukan diet, which friends used very successfully. However, although I tried it for a bit, I found it a little difficult to combine with cooking for a family. I found myself reading articles about weight loss, and decided to come up with my own plan. My life (2 kids and full time work, plus a good deal of laziness) mean that I do very little exercise, apart from walking a bit.

So here is my plan... I'd be interested if anyone else wanted to try it too.

3 RULES:
1) Cut back (or if you're serious cut out) on the following: spuds, rice, wheat (so bread and pasta, plus cakes, biscuits etc) and all other starchy foods. The only exception to this is porridge oats, because they really set me up for the day!
2) All diary must be low fat or fat free
3) Be sensible - this is the catch all, that says actually 2 squares of dark chocolate after a meal is okay, but half a bar isn't. It is also (in reaction to Dukan) the one that says don't be rude - if a friend has made spag carbonara eat it and don't worry too much. But if you're cooking for a friend, don't make spag carbonara... THis also allows me a small glass of wine after a hard day at work!!

So my aim is to start today, with writing a food diary... I'm hoping that writing it down (even though it is completely anonymous!) will shame me into not finishing that bar of chocolate that is sitting in the cupboard. The first few days I'll try to be quite strict on Rule 1 ... and I'll weigh myself every monring when I get up.

Day 1: (9:13)
Breakfast - porridge
Lunch - 2 eggs, cottage cheese and leafy salad
Supper - tuna steak, cottage cheese and leafy salad. [Kids will have the same, but with potato wedges instead of cottage cheese).

Been away, and as expected had to eat what was put in front of me. I'm going to try being strict on Rule 1, so no toast, pasta or spuds etc for a few days. i think this will mean I will be eating roughly like a 'PV' in Dukan diet terms... although I do eat fruit too, so maybe not. Lets see if that can start shifting things.

Thurs (didn't weigh)
Breakfast - Toast with marmalade x2
Lunch - Mackeral, cottage cheese plus rocket and tomato salad
Supper - 2 x eggs, asparagus and courgette; about half a melon
Other - 2x coffee, 1x herbal tea, 1 square choc; 1 choc eclair (sweet, not cake!)

In the interests of research (and seeing talk of the 5:2 diet everywhere) I decided - for the first time in my life - to count the calories yesterday. I reckon I ate between 1000-1200. But it made me realise that I can't be doing with counting... too fiddly and tedious (and what does 100g of anything actually look like?!)

Friday (9:12)
Breakfast - melon; fat-free yogurt with a spoonful of jam.

Kids and Dh are back after being away for a few days, so my 'pure PV' days will probably end now.

I weigh every day when I get up, but only the Monday figure 'counts'. Here is my ''progress" so far

Doing this log has been really helpful. It helps me see lots of things - and for me it is clear that having a few 'PV' (in Dukan terms) days is key to losing weight.

A weekend of over-indulgence, which I'm not even going to attempt to log. Suffice to say it involved 2 3-course meals, puddings and cake, as well as too much wine. Still it was a special occasion, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Surprisingly, I stepped on the scales expecting to be up, but it had stayed the same... so that is good.

Hi Amiga! THanks for the encouragement!
I'm not aiming for any particular event, but just know I've been carrying a little extra weight for ages, and wanted to do something about it. I know that the last few pounds are always difficult, and it is indeed taking a while. But I've found logging really makes me see that, actually, yes, I do eat cake quite often! (And probably would eat even more if I wasn't logging!) I'm trying to do a couple of days a week of so-called PV (a Dukan term) days. These are pure protein and vegetable (from a list of 'approved' vegs) days, and I quite enjoy them, but with lots of work do's going on, and visitors, it hasn't been easy. For me cutting out wheat, spuds etc (Rule 1) is the key thing for losing weight... but they are such a major part of our diets!
