Ok,so decided to do something about my weight after mum has had a heart bypass recently. It has made me realise that she wasn't my size at my age & I need to stop avoiding the mirror & wake up to the fact I need to take myself in hand. I have lost weight well before on ww by doing it with colleagues & then by myself for my wedding. I ate very healthily whilst pregnant as I was terrified of doing anything to jeopardise the baby (after mc) & put on less than a stone in pg which I lost immediately. I think I have put on since then as biscuits appear to be my bloody downfall!
So,I think I will have around 6-7 stone to lose to an ideal but obv have to set smaller targets as I go.
I'm at home on mat leave & could do ww online or sw class locally. I have seen there are pretty much even split on opinions of both. I just need some oomph in choosing & getting off my rather sizeable arse so I don't end up like my mum tbh.
I guess both work on similar principles?
Hi Icelollycraving, the firt step is to want to lose weight which it seems clear you have done, so well done.
I went back to ww on Tuesday for hopefully the last time. I really think going to a meeting is much better as you want to 'please' your leader and you get competitive with the others there. I tried ww at home, but it didn't work for me. I need a kick uo the arse!!
The thing I have done differently this time is not to anyone excpet for dh. Otherwise everyone looks at everything you eat or asks about waht you are eating and lbh we need to lose weight because we like food and think about it a lot. Would be good not to have to talk about it all the time too.
I am really motivated this time and can already see some difference even though I only started tues. My tummy is less bloated and i have lost 2lbs, so it is working.
My dd starts school in sept and i really don't want to the fat mum in the playground.
If it's health you're after, what about Rosemary Conley?
Her diet is based on low fat, low GI eating. The low fat bit is obviously good for cholesterol levels and heart health. She recommends 2 portions of oily fish a week so you still get your healthy fats. The low GI bit controls blood sugar level and can help prevent type 2 diabetes.
I also think it's a really healthy way of eating, and one that is sensible to keep to long term.
Oh, and her classes involve an exercise session for the price...not sure if WW/SW do?
Thanks for the replies. I think sw as the class is in the evening so could go as dh will be home in time.
I have got david kirsch 48 hour detox to give me a good start. Any food after that is like a godsend & it does make you feel good.
Hi if you want an online buddy I'll be happy to do it. Only started last week, so first weigh in tomorrow but have 2.5 stones as my first target. Realistically I could prob do with losing another stone after that.
Personally I haven't told anyone in rl, as have tried to do it before and people start commenting on what you're eating etc I don't want it to become a big thing and everyone talking about it every time they see me.
That would be great
Excellent
I started last tues weighing in at 11st 13lbs...
Have been doing 1500cals a day, so shall weigh in tomorrow and see how it's gone. Am owing to see how it goes, might think about joining ww if I struggle on my own.
I want to be 9st 8lbs by the school summer holidays in July.
My biggest prob is exercise. I have one dd at school and a ds who is still at home, but does do pre school 2 mornings a week, currently I do my housework then and mn obviously
Not really sure how to do any exercise. Ds is too big/old for buggy now and we live in the middle of nowhere think 3 miles to nearest shop so hard to walk anywhere in that sense. We went to the park last week, and went for a walk at the wkend, but need to find a way of doing something every day. Thinking of a DVD as at least can do that when the kids are here.....
I dream of being 11 stone something! I have a sneaky suspicion I will be doing this for a v long time
UltimateHumungosaur Walking for walking sake is fine. Go when you're youngest is at preschool. Wear an ipod or something, the music really helps. Do it the 2 days a week and before you know it you'll be walking to that shop and back . . . 12 miles a week!
Ice lolly I am 5ft 1 I should be about 8 stone apparently .... That is not sustainable for me. Lightest I have ever been is 9st that was 8 yrs ago pre children.
Hi icelollycraving!
Its great that you have decided to lose the weight and improve your health.
Unless you really want to go to ww or sw I'd recommend myfitnesspal.com as its free (although see that some people need the meeting for extra motivation).
I used myfitnesspal in conjunction with low GI and then lower carb diet last year and lost around 4 stone to get to target. It does take a while though (esp if you even more to lose) so you need to see it as a lifestyle change (which from your OP you are).
re: exercise can't get better than 30 day shred (and when weather improves couch to 5k) - worth investing in dumbells, ideally 2kg - they will be heavy to start with but weight training is important to prevent you from losing muscle mass as you lose weight.
I also really recommend hypnosis, really helps when the willpower starts to flag. Some like Paul Mckenna, but have a look at Lisa Jackson's adore yourself slim.
re: diet - calorie counting is ok, but I think you get better results health-wise if you go low GI and cut the white stuff (white flour and sugar etc) from your diet. Its highly addictive and not especially nutritious. I rarely eat grains at all now (even in maintenance) - means I'm less likely to crave sweet stuff - and I am very fit and active.
re: telling people - I only told people when they needed to know, eg if invited to someone's house for lunch!
Good luck!

UltimateHumungosaur I am only an inch taller then you. The window is much bigger than that. You just need to find the right weight for you within it. Where did you get 8 stone from?!
8 stone!! Jesus,if the lady at sw tells me that I think I'll cry!
I'm 5'4. I probably weigh about 18 stone
Icelollycraving Don't worry they won't tell you that!
They will possibly talk about a healthy BMI but there isn't just one healthy weight for each height.
Was told by someone sorry....
You are right about it being a range I just looked up the bmi charts and 7.5-9/9.5 puts me in the ok range. Personally I know I was not thin by any means at 9st but I was very happy. And more importantly to me sustainable.... Just need to get back there.
So am looking at loosing 3 stone them i guess.
At 5 foot 1, 9 stone 9 would be a BMI of 25 (ie boundary between healthy weight and overweight.
8 stone would be a BMI of 21 - which would be slim, I have been maintaining this BMI (I'm 5 4) despite very good muscle tone by being careful all week, and a bit more indulgent at weekends.
Sorry I meant 9st to 9.5 stone . I think it is highly unlikely I would ever be 8st .... Or maybe not who knows... First weigh in tomorrow and I'm feeling hungry I know I have to retrain my mind as well as my body.
Ok,joined sw last night. How can this work? You can eat so much & so many things! Looks like an actual plan you could stick to properly for life if you know what I mean rather than a strict diet. Interestingly, about a third of people weighed were men which I have never seen at a slimming club. They also had some people going who had lost several stone which made me feel a bit better tbh.
I paid for 6 weeks to be sure I go,even if I don't stay for the chatty bit. I did this as my insurance if you like. It was interesting that they asked what my goal was,not being given a goal was refreshing as I do think that it makes you take ownership a bit more.
I have set my first goal at 2 stone. Wish me luck!!
Well done ILC at taking the first step. Taking responsibility for your weight and making changes to your life is a HUGE step. Congratulations! Did you weigh as much as you thought?
I took responsibility for my weight in may 2011. I joined WW and it was horrendous. I had spent yrs avoiding mirrors and didnt think i weighed that much so was quite shocked when i weighed in at 25st9lbs. Since then i have completely changed my attitude to food and activity.
I set myself goals of a stone at a time so its manageble. I do some kind of activity every day. I started by walking my children to school. the 1.5 mile journey each way soon added up but even in the holidays we get out for a walk. When ive dropped them off i put my ipod on with some fast music and walk to the beat.
Then this january i started the couch25k running programme and a zumba class once a week.
So far ive lost 6st6.5lbs.
Its been hard work but if you really want to make a change for yourself and your family then it will be worth it.
Wow vajazzeler that's fab and well done ice lolly for joining up
Wow Vajazzler!! That's amazing, you should be really very proud
I was half a pound off what I thought. Just getting my head around the different categories but it looks like it will be doable.
Ice lolly how are you doing? After my great first week I have struggled this week. It's my TOTM and I have felt so hungry and have gone over my daily allowance twice we also went out for dinner last night and I just ate and ate ... Chinese so hardly healthy... Determined to have a good couple of days today and tomorrow before my weigh in on tues. have gone through my wardrobe today and found a pair of jeans I want to get back into as my first goal.
How's it been for you?
Well I'm finding it ok,easy to follow. The things I miss are the things that are my downfall when I'm feeling lazy. Biscuits, crisps, bread, cheese. I know I can have them but I am trying to kind of reset my palette.
I saw my sw lady in the supermarket yesterday. Think she was a bit taken aback when I said 'hello, made a list & brought my book'.
Looked v keen haha!
I am hoping for a really good loss on Wednesday or I'll feel a bit disheartened.
How did you get on at weigh in ultimate?
