Dress size vs weight?

A.I.B.U. To not understand this? - lots of people talk in terms of being a size 16 and that being overweight and others as size 16 as being a healthy weight. Some seem to say that they are maybe 15 stone and a size 16 - I don't understand the parity between weight and dress size that some people have? Do they chose the smallest size they can fit into? Do they declare their dress size as being the largest item they need to buy? Could u please tell me how you judge it - for example - I am 5'4" - 11 stone - I am pear shaped (big bum but smaller waist) skirts I buy size 14 sometimes a 16, tops size 14 (hate anything tight only arms) but trousers always have to be a 16 (sometimes an 18) so they are not tight on my bum and then usually with a belt to stop the waist gaping. I therefore declare myself to be 11 stone and a size 16. - is that right? By BMI I am overweight so from that point not healthy but only a bit (!) so am going to be personal and ask what is your height and weight and what dress size would you declare yourself to be?

Im 5.5 and weigh 16 stone - im currently a 22 on the bottom and (large norkage) a 24 on top. I tend to drop a dress size with each stone.

5'4" 11 stone size 16 is overweight and on the larger size

5'6" 11 stone size 14 dieting drastically to get to a healthy weight.

Size 16/18 (would perhaps be a bit less on top if it weren't for large norks)

People just carry it differently is all. Part of the variation of humans. I know people much bigger in size than me, who weigh a couple of stone less. Depends on all sorts - height, muscle mass, body fat percentage, tone, width of hips, body shape, maybe even bone density? Also depends on race, that can affect where fat is stored.

squeakytoy Sun 24-Apr-11 09:30:39

It also varys from shop to shop though. I can fit in a M & S size 14, but if I went into Primark, I would be struggling to get into their size 16's.

I am 5'2, weigh 12stone, and a size 14/16. A month ago I was a stone heavier and wearing size 18, but the majority of the weight I have lost has gone from my tummy, waist and bum.

I am 5ft 1 and 9 stone
Size 8 trousers but due to large breasts I am between a 8-12 in tops depending on style and how generous in breast department.

I'm apple shaped and hate tight clothing. BMI is almost touching the overweight area. Want to lose about a stone --but love my food too much--and I'm more active in the summer compared to winter so usually do lose a little.

BMI just inside normal. Honestly, if I lose much more I look haggard. Big bones, I guess smile

This time last year I weighed 11 st 13 and was easily a size 16-18. I think it depends upon muscle/fat ratio - my bodyfat percentage last year was 39, now it's 29% - I took up running and I am much more toned now that I was.

Had a friend who was overweight when I was a 20 who wore the same size clothes as me. She was tiny and I'm clearly very tall. I was scary slim, she was bordering obese. Both wearing a size 12 skirt, but very differently.

Also I think there's a world of difference between say for example size 10 leggings or size 10 jeans/trousers/skirt with zip and button.

It's easy to think you're a lower size than you are if you normally wear elastic waistbands.

I also think you need to take muscle tone in to account I do alot of sports I am 9 stone 5ft 1 size 8 in jeans or leggins but I have a very low fat count and alot of muscle. So muscle weighs more than fat so someone who is very muscular will weigh more but may be the same size height and shape as someone else.

Before pregnancy (am 34 weeks at the moment) my stats were 5ft4, 11 stone and wearing a size 12. I couldn't get my weight down but my shape was changing due to regular gym and personal trainer work outs. I'm hoping that will help me for when the baby arrives.

I think people refer to dress size as that is what they tend to know/aspire to (most people I know will talk about wanting to get into a certain size rather be a particular weight/BMI) but it is the most deceptive/misleading in terms of whether they are healthy or not. BMI is the most helpful way to judge (although this can be misleading if you are toned and muscly!),dress size the least.
I'm 5'6 and 13 stone 7 - gained 3 stone with career/lifestyle changes and am now battling to get it off again to get me back to the healthy BMI I was a few years ago. Size wise though I'm 12-14.

9 1/2 stone - 10 stone
size varies - 6-8 in some shops, 10-12 in others

BMI says I am underweight but I think BMI is bollocks anyway, so don't take any notice.

I think you have to take body type into account - I am tall but very fine boned, I would look fat if I weighed any more (and that is not just vanity speaking, I genuinely would look podgy)

linziluv Sun 24-Apr-11 10:10:06

Last time I shared this I was accused of lying!
Can't go off weight now as having a baby in 4 weeks....
Pre pregnancy I was 5ft 2, 11st 3lb and a 12 on bottom 10 on top. I must add I have good muscle tone and am a solid build...I've never looked my weight and BMI was 28 so "overweight" but at my slimmest which was 8 on top, 10 on bottom I was still around 9 1/2 stone and BMI only just normal! If I'd have lost anymore i'd have looked ill!

But not for much longer - 6 weeks pregnant and stuffing my face!

Flame Sun 24-Apr-11 10:17:46

I tend to go with my clothes size rather than my weight as one changes more than the other. I think of myself as a size 11 as I am snug in my 10s but 12s often loose. I ignore top sizes due to silly norkage.

Weight is misleading imo as my mum is always well over a stone less than me but in larger clothes. Psychomum on the otherhand weighs heavy iyswim.

Spamspamspam Sun 24-Apr-11 10:18:14

I am 5'7" and currently 11.8 and am still a size 16 - was a size 16 at 13.2 but from different shops. Losing 22 lbs has mean't I can get into some shops 16's and other's 14's but I still declare myself as a 16 at the moment. I think in another 8-10lbs time I will be a 14 so at about 10 stone 12 or 11 stone.

I know a few people who say they are a size 16 and are at least 4 stone heavier than me and looking at their circumference I can see they are at least 2 if not 3 dress sizes bigger, I can only assume they shop in different places to me.

I also have a friend who weighs at least 2 stone more than me, we get on the wii fit together regularly to see how much we have lost, she looks a lot slimmer than me and I can sometimes not get her clothes on because she carries it so much better than me, she has a slim waist and tummy and carries it more on her legs but is also a much bigger frame but we are the same height.

WynkenBlynkenandNod Sun 24-Apr-11 10:18:19

Bottom size 16 and top size 18. I started wearing a top and trousers a friend gave me after she lost some weight. I was 15 stone when I started wearing them, she had been 13 St 7lbs. She's same height and similar shape ie. Big boobs and stomach but there was 1.5 stone difference in weight fitting the same clothes. Can only think it is down to me having a larger frame.

NinkyNonker Sun 24-Apr-11 10:41:02

Hmmm, I am 5'8" and around the 13 stone mark, prob a bit less but I never weigh myself. I wear a 14 on the whole, sometimes a 12 on top, sometimes a 16 on the bottom...depending on the style and shop. So I think I am a 14 really. I would class myself as a little overweight, not unhealthily so, just carrying a few extra pounds that I could probably do with shifting I guess.

heliumballoons Sun 24-Apr-11 10:41:24

It interesting to look at how the weight seems to relate to clothes size, as opposed to height iyswim.

Look at what everyone has declared as their stats.

Most 11-12 stoners (like me) are a 12/14.
Most 10-11 st are 10/12
most 12-14 st 14/16.

and all the heights range from 5ft - 6ft and don't seem to make a difference.

Not entirely sure what that tells us re wight/ height/ dress size except maybe clothes are made to fit shape as opposed to all round. For example you can get a size 12 pair of trousers in short/normal and long. Skirts/ dresses list their length so it will be longer/shorter on some (or you chose a length to suit your height!).

Size 10 in most shops, more often need a 12 in Primark

BMI shows me as slightly underweight so I'm always surprised when I need a 12 - looking at other people's weight on here it doesn't make much sense.

But - I have a small waist, small frame and big hips, so I reckon that's why. Trousers that fit me on the hips hang off the waist.

Your actual build and frame makes a lot of difference as well- my mum was same height as me, at her lightest was 8 stone 13, bones protruding everywhere and still a size 14. She had a large frame, wide shoulders and hips.

missmyoldname Sun 24-Apr-11 11:03:33

This all really confuses me. I am 5'11" and approx 12.5 stone. I am a size 16 on the bottom (although V occasionally a 14 in generous sizing) and vary between a 14 and 16 on top (small-ish boobs!).

There are some people on this thread who are 2 or 3 stone heavier than me, same/shorter height and the same dress size. confused Does this mean I must have particularly poor muscle tone? Even when I didn't have an ounce of fat on me at about 10 stone, I was still a 12 (v occasionally a 10) then. I have got quite broad shoulders, but am not particularly big boned.

When I am talking to friends about weight, they often claim to be a smaller dress size than me, but (without being horrible!) look bigger than me IMHO!

Can be an 8,10 or 12, purely dependent on shops.

My monsoon wedding dress (married last August) was an 8 and I was 9 stone. I can't zip it up now but there is a baby stuck to my front. Really depends on cut & material of clothes and body shape I think.

Runningjustasfastasican I suffer from a fat arse too, its like shelf, you could rest a cup of tea on it.

myalias Sun 24-Apr-11 11:21:55

Where you shop makes a huge difference in sizing. If friend told me she is a size 8 and shops in GAP I would know that she is more likely to be a 10 -12 as American sizing is smaller. Next, fat face, white stuff and wallis sizes are on the larger size.

Depends on your height and build and where/how you carry your weight.

And the shop that your "size 16" is from.

I carry a lot of weight on my legs, which doesn't affect clothing sizes, so I am a stone and a half heavier than a friend of a similar height and yet we wear the same sized clothes because her weight is carried on her boobs (she'd be a size smaller than me if not for her boobs, and I'd be probably two sizes bigger if I had her proportions with my weight)

5'7", 10st 2lb, size 10/12 depending on the shop.

rockinhippy Sun 24-Apr-11 11:26:33

YNBU to not understand it, it is confusing, but common sense then tells you its relative to a few points - 1 being height & the other being do you carry fat or muscle, muscle being heavier, therefore you could well be over weight & very fit & healthy, as are a couple of muscle mary friends of mine - bodies to die for & technically obesehmm

Dress size is the same, in that someone who was very small, say 4'10" & a size 16, would be perceived as overweight, & probably by quite a bit - though they could be a smaller size, muscle bound & tinier in size & weigh more.

I'm 5'5", not sure what I actually weigh now, but probably close to 10 stone - size 10/12 in general, but can sometimes need a 14 on top to fit my ffs in - yet I am a 32 in bra width, so my back is considered tiny.

FTW record, I am overweight in that I am over 2 sizes bigger than I was before becoming ill - sprang back to my old size 6/8 within hours of giving birth, I have always been naturally tiny & ate like a horse - I have a tiny frame & therefore even at a size 10/12 I carry more fat than I should, but asking my GP about the extra weight since becoming ill, it affects my mobility as a high proportion of my body weight on top of my old 7,1/2 - 8 stone weight - GP started suggesting I was anorexicshockangry

I'm not huge though & do like the extra curves, just not the extra strain on my already knackered legs.

So IMHO too, its all a bit daft & relative to individuals & shouldn't be taken as any indication of healthy weight - also it depends on where you shop - some designer brands I will still fit into a size 8, other cheap boutique type brands - I dread to thing - grin

Wow- this is very interesting.

I'm 5ft 2
Weight 11 stone
Size 12 (32e chest)
Bmi 26

Sometimes size 12 is tight on my thunder thighs depending on the leg shape. My 'normal' weight is 10 stone. I'm still a size 12 at 10 stone but jeans/trousers are roomy. I would say that I'm pear shaped at my current weight but when I'm back to 10 stone I'm more an hourglass shape. I would say I'm a big 12 at the mo. Size 14 hangs off me.

I have found that since I started swimming a few years ago I am much more toned. I am smaller at 10 stone when i swim than i was previously when i weighed 10 stone but did no excersise at all. My bra size went from 34dd (weighing 10 stone) to a 32e (even at 11 stone)

Another poster mentioned coast-I cannot even zip up a size 16 in there so refuse to buy their clothes!. Have a friend who bought a lovely top and skirt from there in sales.Top fine, skirt looks fit to burst as she refused to buy bigger than a size 12!!.

5' 9.5"
Weigh around 15.5st (I've lost a stone since February by not having a car)
Size 18/20, although probably more the 18 now, It does depend on where I shop. I prefer to buy clothes that are slightly too big than ones that actually fit, bad habit I know.

Hmm, my stats are usually:

5 ' 3
8 stone 6
Size 10

However, I have an 8 week old so atm I'm 9 stone 5 and about a size 12.

size 12-16

I've lost over 2st since last September. I still wear plenty of my old clothes - M&S 'value' crops today, size 16 but a skimpy cut (cos they're value, what IS that all about). Others I've had to bin - size 16 Boden long denim skirt very nearly falls off me, and 34" waist Gap jeans looked like clown trousers. More rigid stuff like shirts I still need a 16 to encompass the boobs (34G down from 36G) but I can fit in a less structured 14 these days. Bottom half is a 14, but some 14s are a bit big now. I had a few size 18 things pre-weight-loss, which I put down to the fit, but I think I was kidding myself. The main thing is that I've lost loads from my natural waist, which is where very few things are required to fit - my tops fitted there as they were big to fit my boobs, and my trousers/skirts didn't come up that high. I just had one hell of a muffin-top!

missmyoldname it is a COMPLETE mystery. I used to be relatively light for my size and put it down to lack of muscle tone, but I'm now much fitter and have far more muscle mass, and I still seem to be wearing a bigger size than you might expect (and haven't dropped as much in dress size as you might expect from a >2st weight loss).

I suppose the other thing to consider is how long your legs are? I have long legs (longer than some others my height) so that may explain why I'm a size 16 rather than anything bigger.

I don't really know what dress size I wear. Usually 10/12/14 or there abouts. If I am making something the dress size is about 18. I am 5'7'' and about 10 stone. People think I'm skinny. I just have bony knees!!
I don't think dress size correlates to physical size in a meaningful way.

I am small-boned, however. Pre-pregnancy I averaged 9st7 - 10st and was normally a size 8, sometimes a size 6. DS is still just 10 weeks though and I'm EBF, so can't lose it too fast. At 10st I feel an ok weight, and at 9st7, I feel great.

TransatlanticCityGirl Sun 24-Apr-11 12:47:08

I don't go by dress size, as I agree that's not a meaningful way to measure.

I think BMI is a better indicator for overall health.

When trying to lose weight, I also check body measurements since pure weight loss isn't always accurate either, since muscle weighs more than fat. This is where dress size comes in. If you were a size 14 most of the time, and you go down to a size 10 most of the time, then that's a job very well done, even if you didn't lose that much actualy weight.

Generally, size 10 in 'younger' shop sizing (Topshop, H&M) but 8 in vanity sizing (M&S etc) and also in some designers, which I think tend to be a bit larger than high street sizes.

I have fairly wide hips so I'm usually a 10 in trousers but am often an 8 in tops and dresses.

I have been a size 14 since I was, well, 14 and the fact that I am now 3 stone heavier is a minor consideration! confused @ vanity sizing!

Am I the only person who can't declare their dress size?

I am close to 5'8", and about 61-62 kg (just over 10 stone, I think).
I am about the same measurements (~38-28-38) as a young Sophia Loren but I would struggle to find a dress to fit, because I am not pear-shaped. I typically need size 8 in trousers & size 16 in tops (am only 36C or so, but broad shouldered).

If someone can suggest what dress size I should be, please do!

sickoftheholidays Sun 24-Apr-11 20:34:40

I'm 5ft 10
Currently 16st and quite obese according to BMI, size 16-18 depending on the shop. Most people dont believe that I weigh what I do until I get on the scales. I dont deny I'm carrying some extra weight I shouldnt be, but I still have excellent muscle tone, having spent all my adult life horse riding and looking after horses, which is hard physical graft even on a good day.
before kids I was 13-13.5st and size 14 and a 16 in top shop etc
On my wedding day I was 11st and a size 12, occasionally a 10 in M&S

The Wii Fit still says I'm overweight but has stopped telling me I'm obese.

Takver Sun 24-Apr-11 20:55:43

I think it really depends on your shape and how you wear your clothes.

I'm 5' 2", weight 7 stone 6 lbs, right on the bottom of acceptable BMI

Looking at others on here with those measurements they would seem to take an 8 - 10, but I'm definitely a 10-12. I do a lot of physical work, and my shoulders don't remotely fit in a size 8 top, while a size 8 bottom (and often a 10) doesn't fit on the hips.

SpringFollows Sun 24-Apr-11 20:56:10

5 ft 5. 10 stone 12. I am usually midway between size 12 and size 14. Others on this thread are my height and wight and say they are size 16. i think the sizings are wrong. I have never been in a 16 in my life- even when pg. (Granted, I only shop at M&S and M and Co and that).

I am 5ft 6.5", weigh 11st 7lb and wear size 12 clothes. I have a very small waist and hardly any hips. I also tend to carry my weight well as my bottom half is in proportion with my top half.

I find it strange that a woman weighing one stone less than me also wears a size 12 in clothes. We are all made up of different shapes and sizes though.

springbokdoc Sun 24-Apr-11 21:17:50

Thinking on this, I don't think my hips will allow me to go into my previous size 10 trousers. My hips have just, well, expanded and whilst there is a bit of fat on there at the moment my actual bony hip size seems to have increased. My thighs though could slim down a lot.

Truthfully (and as motivation to me if you have) how many have got back to their pre-pg weight?

39.5 kilos normally (6.2 stone).
Size 4/6/8 depending on the clothes shop. Most shops it's 6-8, next/monsoon/primark it's 4(well the 6 is too big).

But the best one was in Jane Norman a shop assistant looked me up and down declared I was fat and would struggle to get into a size 10!

springbokdoc I weigh 10lb less than my pre-pregnancy weight. DD is 7 though, so that is a long time ago ... I weigh less than I did when I got married 11.5 years ago, and would have to go back 15 years and a relationship break-up to be lighter. Virtual weigh-in further back up this thread though will reveal I still aint exactly wasting away.

Oh Blimey! Erm - am 5 foot 4 inches tall, and weigh 7 and a half stone, with a medium frame.

I am an odd shape though. Am slim with no arse or thighs to speak of, but I have a wide waist -my rib cage sits right on top of my hips, and I don't go in at the waist hardly. I can't bear tight things around my waist, so am normally a size 10 bottoms, or a generous size 8.

I also have fairly broad shoulders, for my size, and am 34D, so a size 10-12 for the top. Am slim but wiry with muscle - Go figure - told you I am odd!

forehead Mon 25-Apr-11 00:23:02

I have never been obsessed with my clothes size . I am 5ft 7 inches , and size 10. I don't bother weighing myself, because i am aware of the fact your weight does not always reflect how you look. One has to take into consideration body proportions etc.
I know women who are a size 18 who look pretty slim to me and others who are only a size 8 or 10, but look slightly chubby.

But I keep forgetting I'm now a 10, and take the wrong size into the fitting rooms all the time! I'm lighter now than I've ever been in my adult life.

Interesting what someone said about the sizing in the past being smaller - I found an ancient stash of Size 14 clothes in my loft, dating back to the early 1990s, and they were all tiny round the waist.

5' 4" - 10st - size 12 (although I'm pg with twins so that's sort of going out of the window). My favourite weight was 9 stone 4 lbs which I was for a long time until dh and I decided to ttc and it crept up to 10st. Even then, I was still a size 12 on my hips/bum - I think I could be an 8 all over but my hips and bum would still stay a size 12.

LadyClariceCannockMonty Mon 25-Apr-11 09:52:57

I don't really talk about dress size as it varies so wildly between shops, and sometimes even between different items within shops. Also some shops have different size scales, often using US sizes or, like Ted Baker, using a 0-5 scale. I tend to know what size I am in individual shops, but if an assistant in a shop I rarely use asks me what size I need I usually say '10'. Depending on the place and the item though I might end up with a 6, 8, or 12!

5' 10" and 9 stone, by the way.

JennaTailor Mon 25-Apr-11 10:12:53

justpaddling Mon 25-Apr-11 10:26:31

5' 11'' and 12.5 stone. Usually size 12. Sometimes need a 14 depending on the shop or the cut/style of the garment.

tryingtoleave Mon 25-Apr-11 10:43:24

My clothes size varies from a 6 to a 12 depending on where I shop, but I think of myself as a ten. If I sew I am a fourteen ( which I find a bit traumatic and weird - if I am fourteen ,who does an eight fit?). I am 5'2 and will have to run off to find a scale now...

Unpregnant - 5ft4, 8st give or take a lb or 2 and a size 8. (occassionally a 6 or a 10 depending on fit).

No boobs to speak of, very small waist but large arse and thighs.

At the moment, still 5ft4, 8st8 and a size 10-12 but I am 4 months pregnant. Luckily on the clothing front I don't put on much weight during pregnancy (never got to 9st with DS1 and with the DTS I only weighed 9st 7) but I'd much rather have a big bump. People think I'm purposely trying not to put on weight but nothing could be further from the truth

Depends a lot on height, I think. I'm a little over 8st and a size 10-12 (or occasionally an 8 depending on the shop and style!) . However I'm only 5'2" so 8st for me is not skinny.

I do have the same problem with jeans and trousers, often have to go up a size so they're not too tight on my bum/thighs, which means several excess inches around my waist which has to be cinched in with a belt...

I would always have to get 22 in a top as have GG boobs. I can't understand how I am a size 22 at my weight when there are others wearing 22 at about 16-17 stone. I have about 4 stone on them but we would be the same size. They may be one or two inches shorter but not enough for the extra 4 stone to make sense. Maybe i should be a 24-26 but i don't squeeze myself into my size 22 clothes so people must be buying clothes that are too big for them.

headfairy Mon 25-Apr-11 12:50:05

Agree it's bloody confusing, esp as women's sizing isn't standardized. Some shops have teeeny tiny sizes, others much more generous.

I'm 5'10
Weight 14st12
Size 16 (occasionally 18 for trousers, big hips)

daimbardiva Mon 25-Apr-11 13:09:23

Muscle tone and general frame size also needs to be taken into account. I'm pregnant now, but beforehand I weighed 11 stone and I am 5'11". I was wearing size 12. The slimmest I've been was 9 3/4 stone, but even then I was only a 10. Size 8 is just to small for my frame size.

My best friend is 5'9", weighs about 13 stone and wears 14/16 and is by no means overweight

Bumblequeen Mon 25-Apr-11 13:26:30

Everyspring - I have an athletic build. I lost pregnancy weight in a few months. I felt breastfreeding really helped.

millskii Mon 25-Apr-11 14:35:25

Before pregnancy (currently 29wks):
size 10

I feel like I am really heavy for my size. I'm small chested, pear shaped with a flat tummy. I'm quite petite, but I did a lot of swimming and horseriding as a child and teenager so I think I have a higher muscle mass. I'm fairly toned with no flab, so my heavy weight vs small size is a mystery both to me and my midwife!

Goodtobesilly Thu 26-May-11 23:58:01

Am really glad I have read the messages on this board as they have made me feel much better about myself! I am 5"3 and weigh just under 11 stone, althouggh I am only a UK size 10 or small 12; sometimes I even wear a size 8! I am currently ten and a half weeks pregnant so some of the weight is water retention etc but I have always been a lot heavier than I look! I do a lot of exercise so am pretty toned. Even when I was a super skinny size 6 I stilled weighed 9 and a half stone. Used to feel really down about my weight but now realise it is just a number on the scales and that you should go by how your clothes fit and how you look and feel :- D

whackamole Fri 27-May-11 00:06:12

I get what you mean.

When I was 9 stone 3 (the lowest I can remember) I was a size 8 waist but had hips and big boobs. My friend who was 8 stone 10, 2 inches taller was a size 10 but straight up and down.

I know it is a cop-out, but I genuinely feel that I have 'heavy bones' - I am only 5ft 5 but at 11 and a half stone I was still only a size 12, despite being overweight on BMI.

Now I am just fat. Although I'm pregnant so I'll give myself a small break grin

LDNmummy Fri 27-May-11 00:32:49

5.8" and a size 10/12 before pregnancy, depending on where I bought my clothes from. Shortly before pregnancy I was a definite 12 but have not gone over that before.

Im also 10 1/2 to 11 stone on average.

I tell people my average as I don't fluctuate much from what I have said.

As others have said, muscle weighs more than fat so lots of things to take into consideration.

A lot of people get an idea of what their size is from what they find fits them more often on the high street. The problem with that is that the high street is too varied in sizes provided.

NacMacFeegle Fri 27-May-11 01:25:54

Before I lost weight, I was 15 stone 11, and a size 20 top and 16 bottom - 5'7. Currently about 11 stone, 16 top, 12 bottom (10 in River Island and Gap for some reason.)

I am aiming for 10 stone simply because I would like to wear a 14 top! grin

burgerclub Fri 27-May-11 02:14:09

Morloth Fri 27-May-11 02:25:49

I am heavy for my size.

75kgs (about 12 stone I think)
Size 10

But I workout a lot, and my favourite workout is weights.

Over the last year with babies and moving I actually lost weight but gained size, back to it now and everything has tightened up again.

VforViennetta Fri 27-May-11 02:31:14

The last time I was weighed I was 16 stones, but I was heavily pregnant at the time. I'm probably that and more atm.

I wear 22 in bottom and top, but if I lost the tummy I'd probably be a much smaller size. I am so apple shaped it's ridiculous.

I see people much fatter than me wearing clothes that I would kill myself in.

It's much easier to be fat all over than to be apple shaped, I freaking hate it. If I could lose the belly I would be fine. Even when I was a child I still had a belly, I have never been slim in my life.

LDNmummy Fri 27-May-11 02:32:19

Morloth you don't sound 'heavy' to me, actually sound really healthy, especially if you use weights. I tend to get to the larger end of my average weight level when I use weights to train.

Ah... missing the gym wierdly, never missed it before.

5DollarShake Fri 27-May-11 02:34:12

I am 5'8"
72kg (11.4 stone)
Size 12. Well, size 10 in vanity-sizing stores, and sometimes a 14 in places like H&M and Zara.

I think everyone will be the same clothing size if they are around the same weight, even if their height varies wildly. So - 11 stoners will be a size 12, regardless if being, 9 stoners will be a size 8/10, etc, etc...

But the point is, someone who is 5'10" and a size 12 will look (and be) slim and in proportion, compared with someone who is 5' and a size 12.

This is why you can't say X size is 'fat' until you know more about the person's height. If they are very tall, then of course they're not fat as a lot of the weight is made up of their extra height, as opposed to them being overweight, IYSWIM.

Morloth Fri 27-May-11 02:34:20

Lose the carbs Vienetta, you don't have to go crazy low carb, but I would bet a large amount of money that it is the carbs that are causing your apple shape.

VforViennetta Fri 27-May-11 02:37:36

I am so going to Slimming World now though, I hate it, if I don't go i am sure to just get fatter, it's not good.

5DollarShake Fri 27-May-11 02:38:53

See Morloth you're a couple of KG heavier than me and yet a size smaller than me - you're obviously really toned and slim, with the weight being made up of muscle rather than fat.

I am slim; definitely not fat, and yet I do have surplus fat on my body to lose. I'm fortunate that I'm tall and well-proportioned so it's only really noticeable when I'm slobbing out ill-postured.

VforViennetta Fri 27-May-11 02:41:40

I do agree Morloth, I had gestational diabetes with my last child so had to cut down on carbs and what not. I came out of that pregnancy lighter than I went in.

I know what I need to do, the doing it thing is the hard part. Reading these types of thread though is very inspiring.

5DollarShake Fri 27-May-11 02:49:00

I always used to rely on how my clothing felt to know if it was time to lose a bit of weight, but that never worked for me, since by the time you notice everything is really tight and you're having to go up a size when clothes shopping, you've actually gained quite a bit and have to put in a serious amount of work to lose it again. I used to yo-yo wildly when I relied on this method.

I know people say 'throw away the scales' but I find hopping on them every morning the best way to lose and maintain weight.

Lose - since as you see the weight gradually going down, it motivates you to continue, and maintain - because you an see if you're creeping up in the very early stages, and it's subsequently much easier to cut back for a few days rather than have to lose a fair amount once it's actually been gained.

I actually weigh just a tad under that now, but our weighing scales is a bit whoopsie.

tyler80 Fri 27-May-11 08:56:23

5dollarshake I disagree that a certain weight = a certain dress size

I have a couple of friends who are the same height as me, both weigh over a stone less but one is the same size and one is a size bigger. There's a huge amount of variation between body types which influence weight and dress size.

Pendeen Fri 27-May-11 08:57:59

5 ft 2

10 trousers and 12 tops (big boobs)

That's the easy part.

Dresses though, are a totally different matter.

I have 10s, 12s and even some 14s, and they all fit equally well!

Most dress designers seem to be schitzophrenic when it comes to the relationship between the top and the bottom.

Morloth Fri 27-May-11 09:01:38

My BMI is 25.2 (according to an online calculator) which apparently means I am overweight. BMI IMO, is a crock of shit.

5'6" about 9.5 stone, size 8-10 on top 10 on bottom.

howabout Fri 27-May-11 09:06:19

I am a 5'6" bag of bones (when not pregnant) with a bmi below 20. Due to said bones and commensurate broad shoulders and hips for my build I am a size 12 or above depending on the shop. I think dress size is irrelevant to issues of health and weight and the media's concentration on size 0 etc really annoys me. I had to quote my vital statistics to a distraught fitness mad teenager only last week to reassure her that you don't have to be a 10 and under.

candleduck Fri 27-May-11 09:07:09

5'7" 59kg (9 stone 3?). Size 8. Huge boobs (breastfeeding) but they're hopefully on the way out - was an A/B cup before baby, now am a generous DD (and fed up with them!). Rest of me is very toned though so prob look like I weigh less than I do.

acumenin Fri 27-May-11 09:07:09

5Dollar, I don't think it works quite like that. I'm around 5'9 and maybe 10-11 stone (no scales) and yes, am around a size 12, but it depends on the clothes. I have a broad back with muscled shoulders (I know blush) and so I sometimes wear up to an 18 in tailored jackets, but down to easily an 8 in skirts because I have a small waist. I have clothing in every size from 8-18 in my wardrobe.

Am currently doing something about it though!

Dress size - well this is where it gets confusing - size 10 hips - size 12 waist - size 14 bust/shoulders.

If dress buying have to get a 14 for bust/shoulders and take it in for my hips - otherwise I have acres of empty material around my butt!

I did a lot of manual jobs in my yoof so think this attributed to the disproportionate shoulders...am also very muscularly built in general.

Getting jeans that fit properly are a bloomin' nightmare!

Just did my BMI. It's 18.5.

I have been 9st +- ~5lb all my adult life (I'm 40). With both my pregnancies I put on 2 or 3 stone (I can't remember now) and lost it very quickly and then more (BF sucks the life out of me!). DS2 has just turned 2 and it's only in the last months I've crept back up to nearly 9st. I went below 8 1/2 for a while which was not a good look.
I am very toned as I run.

Body shape is all-important - I've been as low as 7st 5lbs, doing loads of exercise, and still had a hefty/wobby bottom with cellulite (rest of me was very small though).
I wouldn't care what I weighed, if only I was in proportion (not fair!)
One day I expect we'll be able to scan in our body shape and cross-reference it woth online clothes shops, to find the perfect fit.
At the moment, most trousers/skirts are either too tight on the hips or too loose on the waist.

fotheringhay Fri 27-May-11 10:29:16

Wobbly bottom I mean!

I have dropped a dress size - to a 16 - since joining the gym, For this reason, I assume for people like me (who do lots of excercise), BMI measurements are total nonsence.

M and S (size 10)
Zara (size 12)
Jane Norman (size 14- well, if I was in any doubt before, I'm never going back there again!)

rookiemater Fri 27-May-11 11:10:44

Tortu it is amazing how sizes differ between stores. The great thing for me is how they have gone up over the years, so in my early twenties I weighed 9st7lb and was a 12-14 and here I am now at 10st 12, still in the same dress size. Either my weight has shrunk or the clothes have got bigger.

Size 12 on bottom and 14 on top (32H breasts)

I have 30 inch waist and 41 inch hips (before pregnancy) but massive boobs and I have quite short legs.

Toomuchtea Fri 27-May-11 11:57:14

Clothes have definitely got bigger rookiemater. I still have clothes from 20 odd years ago which are a size 12, and they're a very different fit to the 12 of today. Sizing has definitely changed, as I'm still mostly a size 12 but weigh a stone more than I did 20 years ago!

10 stone
Size 10-12. Never a 10 on top as have very broad shoulders and arms like a gibbon. Do wish clothes manufacturers would realise that if you have long legs you are likely to have arms to match. Would be so lovely to have a longsleeved top something that fitted but that didn't end 2" above my wrists.

Toomuchtea Fri 27-May-11 11:58:07

Not sure where that errant "something" came from. Sorry.

LadyOfTheCuntryManor Fri 27-May-11 12:02:17

I wish arsehole shops would realise that JUST because I need a large bikini top to contain my norks, does not mean I am a size 24 on the bottom.

It's a huge problem when they don't allow you to mix and match.
Have settled paying £50 for a Freya bikini which I haven't even bastard worn yet.

LillyTheMinx Fri 27-May-11 12:09:25

Toomuchtea I read an article a while ago that said clothes sizes are based on the number of people who are x size. I can't remember whether a size 10 or 12 is the average, but now the average size of a person is larger so clothes sizes are larger.

I probably haven't explained this very well at all but I hope you get my drift....

LillyTheMinx Fri 27-May-11 12:13:11

It was years ago when I read it so maybe I'm just a bit confused and an't remember it properly

lovemyskinnyjeans Fri 27-May-11 12:14:53

I think shops are definately "creeping" their sizing to be more generous - people feel better about fitting into a smaller size and more compelled to buy from them then.

I've been exactly the same weight/size for over 15 years but in some shops my size has gone down and the size I would previously have worn is gaping.

giveitago Fri 27-May-11 13:06:30

Right now 43 years old with weight of 8.5bl stone and a size 10 and I'm 5ft 1. I'm nearly a stone heavier than pre pregancy but I can still fit into SOME of my size 8s. I feel I look huge but I'm all fat. When I was 7.3 stone I was 32% fat so I'm actually better now than I was then. But I wobble.

Can't be arsed to diet as I'm not overweight - I'm just flabby and old. I don't give a shit. I'm happy to wear anything as big as it needs to be for me to be comfy.

Next sizings are huge - I can still get into a size 6 petite jean - a joke really.
Oh yeah and I'm very top heavy I need to by a size fucking 14 to get my breasts in when the rest is bagging around and don't get me onto these boho maxi dresses with breast shaping - I need a 16 just to get my tits in the front material when there's about a half a foot of material bagging around my back.

bonkers20 Fri 27-May-11 13:23:42
giveitago Fri 27-May-11 13:27:27

I just did and I came out as size 14-16 US size. You sure? Possibly they measure from your largest point which is my 30g bust a dress but I'm not that size all over.

I think we're a top heavy nation and we need UK dress sizings to reflect that.

Serenitysutton Fri 27-May-11 13:27:37

I am 5'3"
about 8st 10lb? haven't weighed for ages.
size 8/10 bottom half size 6/8 top half

Sure this has already been said, but dress size is not a good measurement of whether you are overweight. Your dress size will depend on your frame as well as the amount of flesh on that frame. For example if I was a size 14 I would be overweight, as I'm tiny framed, but my friend who is 5'10" and has broad shoulders and hips is a size 14 even though she is slim.

QuickLookBusy Fri 27-May-11 14:46:40

Normally a size 10 in trousers

32ff but still tend to wear size 10. Plenty of tops don't fit me at that size due to boobage but going up sizes doesn't get me something that fits either so I just avoid those styles or get something from bravissimo in 10sc

5' 10""
9 stone or thereabouts (fluctuates by a few pounds)

I generally think of myself as a size 8-10, but clothes sizing is meaningless; some shops have their own system (like Ted Baker going 0-5, whatever that means) and an 8 in TopShop may not be the same as an 8 in Jigsaw. Sizes vary even within shops sometimes. I think it'd be a lot easier if clothes were sold on actual measurements rather than sizes.

hmc Fri 27-May-11 15:34:44

I am 5 feet 8.5
Weight 12 stone 0
Clothes size 12 (occasionally a 14 but 85% of the time a 12)

However I find it interesting that people distinctly more pudgy than me seem to fit a 12 according to them...also a friend of the same height weighs exactly the same as me with an objectively bigger bottom! I have quite a bit of lean muscle mass though so perhaps that's it???

hmc Fri 27-May-11 15:40:28

I think there is something to be said for 'build' or 'frame' influencing weight, because in my late teens I was just a little less than 10 stone (and on the brink of bulimia) and my periods stopped (insufficient body fat) - my anxious mother took me to the docs who exhorted me to eat....and yet I notice that Lady Clarice is 1/2 inch taller than me and is undoubtedly healthy at her 9 stone ish

Is there anyone who does clothes for small norks? If a top is long enough in the sleeves it's invariably a couple of sizes too big round the torso or vice versa. <bane of my life>

I have QuickLookBusy, but they've not yet cottoned on to short people with big norks sad. Mind you, their necklines show my belly button off beautifully grin.

I have requested a petite section, so fingers crossed that enough people raise it.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne Fri 27-May-11 16:12:41

I am also puzzled at the variation. I am 5'6, currently just over 9 stone, and mostly a size 12, although sometimes size 10 where they do vanity sizing grin Annoyingly, boguht three dresses (size 12) last week by mail order - when they turned up they were way too big, and now the website says they're out of size 10 sad - s'pose I should have learned by now to buy 10 and 12 and send the wrong ones back...

hmc Fri 27-May-11 17:27:56

It would be quite useful if people could post current photos and we could make our own private (or not so private) assessments. Perhaps cut your head off the photo if you are worried about being identified....

hmc Fri 27-May-11 17:28:38

Just a though - and probably a not very popular one grin

tyler80 Fri 27-May-11 17:29:32

I have a photo up on my profile, it's was put up there to illustrate a point in past BMI discussions

hmc Fri 27-May-11 17:32:55

You look very trim tyler - in my estimation (without cheating and looking at your post) I am thinking size 10 perhaps 8? Now I am going to look at what you said!

hmc Fri 27-May-11 17:35:36

I was right with the size 10 but would never have guessed at your height of only 5ft 4 you weigh nearly 11 stone - it sounds 'heavy' given that you are slim and average-ish height. Sort of fits in with what I thought about weight and BMI being a bit misleading in some cases

raindroprhyme Fri 27-May-11 17:36:47

raindroprhyme Fri 27-May-11 17:43:18

i would have said i was a similar shape to you tyler from your photo my Stats are 32 E boobage i have an tiny waist so size 10 trousers gape on me cos of my arse.
But that could be me lying on the beach.

hmc Fri 27-May-11 17:46:47

But the point is raindrop that at same height and, as you've said, same shape as tyler, you weigh 1 stone 5lb less than her. So weight is seemingly no guide at all as a measure

NorhamGardens Fri 27-May-11 17:52:20

5ft 4"
9.2 stone
Size 14, bottom and top. Why am I not a smaller dress size?

I buy what fits! I'm 5'6", weigh about 10½ stone but tend to find that I'm 14 or even, occasionally, a 16 at times. confused What I don't understand is when someone says that they are a size 14/16 and they are DEFINITELY bigger than me and there is simply no way that they could fit into some of my clothes and move, let alone be comfortable.

I have some things that are 10/12 and they fit perfectly, but they were bought pre children and I think the sizings were different then. TBH I just don't tend to study the sizes too hard and if it fits great, if it doesn't I get one up or one down.

raindroprhyme Fri 27-May-11 17:57:55

Norham why???
you weigh less than me.

KTisPG Fri 27-May-11 18:07:16

5 9', 13st size 12 bottom, size 14 top. BMI says overweight, but I feel healthy at that weight and wouldn't want to be any smaller so I chose to ignore them. I can't see how one rule can be applied to everyone when we all have different body shapes etc

coco2901 Fri 27-May-11 18:22:20

I'm 5ft 8, currently 12 stone and size 14, I say currently as I had a baby 3weeks ago so I'm hoping to be back to my prepreg weight of 11.5 shortly... At 11.5 I still average a 14 but jeans and a few other items are a 12. I'm apple shaped with big (34E) boobs

yukoncher Fri 27-May-11 18:30:40

11 stone
dress size 14-16
BMI says I'm right at the top end of average, occasionally it classes me as overweight.

Would consider myself overweight for my natural frame :/

Would be healthier being 9 1/2 stone, as I once was!

yukoncher Fri 27-May-11 18:32:17

My waist is way too big. 35inches angry

foreverondiet Fri 27-May-11 18:36:25

I am 5 foot 4 inches. 8 stone 11 pounds.

Size 10. I know this as I measured with tape measure - 36 hips, 28 waist and 34 bust. However in some shops, ie M&S size 10 is too big, and size 8 fits, even though I know I am a size 10. I am not an 8 though.

I would say therefore to go by measurements with tape measure and not by some shops interpretations. I know some people who say they are a 14 when I am sure they are a 16 or 18. Maybe they mean that they can buy 14s if its cut generously.

suzikettles Fri 27-May-11 19:25:55

I'm 5'6" and 11 stone. Size 12, 14 or 16 depending on the shop and the item.

43" hips, 34" waist, 34" chest, F cup, very broad shoulders.

Odd shape and difficult to get clothes to look good. I need to lose a stone and I'm v keen to get that waist measurement down as it indicates a pile of abdominal fat which isn't healthy.

suzikettles Fri 27-May-11 19:31:32

Right, just read up on how to measure yourself properly and discovered that taking your bust measurement isn't the same as when measuring for a bra blush, so I'm actually 43/34/42 which makes more sense.

I am 5ft 4ins, 10 stone 4 pounds and a size 12.

CognitiveDissident Fri 27-May-11 19:41:14

I'm 5'8" and vary between 9.5 and 10 stone. Size 10 bottom, 12 top.

37 "hips, 29" waist, 40" bust (yay for breastfeeding!)

Sizes have definitely changed; at 18 I was size 10 and weighed 8 stone.

MizzyFizzy Fri 27-May-11 19:44:20

I posted earlier but as we now want measurements too.....

5ft 4in

Hips 34"

Waist 28" and a half!!

Chest 42" but only wear a 34D bra..... rib cage 34 (just under boobs) ...get the tape around my shoulder blades - 2" down from armpits - to measure chest including boobs and it all goes to pot..... huuuuuuuge back and shoulders as mentioned before.

34" rib cage and a D cup should = a 38" ish chest I believe.

Inside leg 29 to 30 depending on cut of trousers.

Oh and no idea about my BMI probs top end of Ok....never looked...... as I'm built like flippin' wrestler presumed BMI would be useless as a guide!

LeQueen Fri 27-May-11 20:04:10

I'm 5 foot 7 inches - weight fluctuates between 11 stone and 11 stone 4lbs. Am a normal size 12/small size 14 depending on which shops I buy clothes in.
I'm small boned, with no bum, big boobs, and carry most of my weight on my tummy.
Was 10 stone 4lbs this time last year and looked much better for it. Was in a small size 12, and some size 10 stuff.
But if my weight had dropped any lower I think my face would have looked gaunt?

However, even at 10 stone 4lbs I felt quite hefty, and at 11 stone 4lbs I feel very plump and frumpy...this is because until I was 31 I was just over 9 stone, and could easily slip into a Karen Millen size 10 hmm

LeQueen Fri 27-May-11 20:04:56

Waist is 32/33 and inside leg is 32.

Piglet28 Fri 27-May-11 20:06:16

size 8/10

Mrsdoasyouwouldbedoneby Fri 27-May-11 20:24:21

I often think I could be confused for a man, a very short one.

I am 5ft somewhere around 8st (just under last time I looked), and an 8... sometimes boned dresses are more, the kids did something to my ribs during pregnancy... they seem to be bigger... so I look even more 'boyish'. Am thinking I need to lose weight... another half a stone.. I did get down there but my clothes fell off. (my stats were somethinglike 30-26-32).

NacMacFeegle Fri 27-May-11 20:30:46

38/33/37. No actual arse, giant lardy middle. Gorgeous, I am. grin

LeQueen Fri 27-May-11 20:38:13

You're just the same measurements as me Nac. I have really lardy tummy and c-section overhang - I'm just fighting the blokes off with a stick, I am hmm

Shodan Fri 27-May-11 20:52:13

11st 2lb

32/28/39. However I have very broad shoulders, which I actually quite like cos they balance out my hips. Stupidly narrow ribcage resulting in 'difficult to get bras for' boobs.

32" inside leg.

I would really like to lose 3/4 of a stone or so, to reduce my thunder thighs. I will, one day. After I've had enough chocolate.

LeQueen Fri 27-May-11 20:54:04

shodan I'm only a 32 bra, have you tried Bravissimo?

PercyPigPie Fri 27-May-11 20:56:46

5 feet 8 (have shrunk - I'm sure I was 5'9") and 10 and a quarter stone. I need to be 9 stone 7lbs - 10 stone to feel comfortable (though I have 'big bones' - broad shoulders). It has taken me for ever to loose the last few pounds (which kind of makes me feel this is my natural weight for my age now).

wheredidyoulastseeit Fri 27-May-11 21:01:52

5 feet 7
10stone 7lbs

Shodan Fri 27-May-11 21:06:44

LeQueen - no, don't think so. Do they do good, comfy non-wired bras? Can't stand underwires for daytime. And they need to be a 32D. Add the two requirements together and ta-da! Problem!

bigTillyMint Fri 27-May-11 21:18:11

MudandMayhem, I used to be 9 and a half stone pre-DC, also 5'8 and now my natural weight seemd to be 10st or just over.

PercyPigPie Fri 27-May-11 21:59:55

bigTillyMint - it's a bit grim, isn't it? I noticed when a group of school friends and I met last year that we all suddenly started to change shape :-(. Glad it's not just me though!

FreudianSlipper Fri 27-May-11 22:05:06

hsurp Sat 28-May-11 05:23:40

What the heck is "stone???" All I know is that all women's sizes are different, based on the designer and manufacturer. You need to try it on or stretch it against you. I find I am an XL in women's shirts but I have no idea with pants or shorts or skirts or capris. Basically, if it fits, it's your size with THAT designer. I have found that 16 - 18 works for me but I prefer to go with the Large or Extra Large sizes. The numbers don't work as well as the Large or XL sizes. I love T-shirts while I am trying to lose weight so almost all the time I will wear T-shirts and capris. Then, I can better know what I fit into.

PenguinArmy Sat 28-May-11 05:37:15

Are you in the US hsurp or is it a rhetorical question? One stone is 14lbs and to get from US to UK size you need to add 2 (even) sizes, so a US 4 is a UK 8.

Pre pg, A size 8 (XS to S), BMI mid range, height 5' 0-1" weight 8 stone and a bit.

I'm not sharing figures - but for some reason my frame is such that I can weigh quite heavy, but size comparatively small if you get what I mean. I've weighed some numbers in the past and been accused of lying by people who wouldn't believe them because I didn't "look" that weight.

fluffles Mon 30-May-11 13:06:39

i'm 5'2"

i weigh 11 stone blush

but for some weird reason i am only a size 14 and sometimes a 12.

i blame years of martial arts and now running and mountain biking, i am also very strong - i guess i have muscle under my layer of fat, but anybody would think i had bones made of lead!!!

Bottleofbeer Mon 30-May-11 15:24:49

I'm 5'3 and have lost half a stone this week taking me to 11 stone. I'm lucky in that when I stop eating crap I lose weight very quickly.

I'm generally a size 14 but am only small in the arse and thigh area so anything to fit my waist tends to hang off my arse.

Odd though before I had kids I was 7-ish stone, that kind of weight these celebs diet to to be a size zero but at that weight I was a comfortable size ten. I wasn't skinny with it. Maybe sizing has changed in the last 15 years.

Going to keep going till I reach about nine and a half, which makes me a comfy 12.

sprinkles77 Mon 30-May-11 15:35:16

5ft 1. About 9st +/- 2lb. Depends on the shop, usually a 10, sometimes an 8. If the 10 is too small I shop elsewhere! Sizing has definitely changed. I have an old M&S cashmere sweater which says size 14. I think it's at least 20 years old cos I wore it at school and it was a hand me down then. I know it's shrunk a little, but not loads cos it's not gone all stiff like shrunken wool tends to. It fits me fine.

sprinkles77 Mon 30-May-11 15:36:17

oh, measure waist at the narrowest part, usually at or near your navel.

valiumbandwitch Mon 30-May-11 15:38:32

I think people's waist sizes are more of a guide to their clothes size than their weight.

size 10-12
waist 29" (i'm trying to reduce that)

Somebody my weight with enormous boobs would have to be smaller everywhere else.

TalkinPeace2 Mon 30-May-11 15:47:15

What is your wrist circumference?

I'm 5'5" 9 stone 6 and size 10
I do a LOT of yoga and swimming
my wrist is 15cm round...

Mollydollydoll Mon 30-May-11 16:04:52

If it's a cheap dress from primark it's a 16 lol

bigTillyMint Mon 30-May-11 16:15:03

I'm 5'8"
10 stone-ish
Size 10/12 usually
wrist is 16cm round.

What does that mean?

bigTillyMint Mon 30-May-11 16:17:56

I have a very broad back and wide shoulders.

TalkinPeace2 Mon 30-May-11 16:26:06

Tilly - there is an advanced version of the BMI used by medics that uses wrist circumference to adjust the expected weight - let's see what others come in with.

rookiemater Mon 30-May-11 16:44:19

Thats interesting talkinpeace2 as I have absolutely tiny wrists and ankles but broad shoulders and hips.
As I said above I am 5ft5.5 and roughly 10st 12, at 11st and above I look really fat even though thats just above BMI and I think its because my frame is designed to be reasonably thin IYSWIM whereas I know some people who weigh more than me who don't look fat.

valiumbandwitch Mon 30-May-11 17:44:52

BMIs must be on the way out. Still useful, but I think waist to height ratio is far more telling. I was shocked that mine was about 50%!! Sounds very high and I don't think of myself as 'fat' although I'd like to be slimmer.

valiumbandwitch Mon 30-May-11 17:48:25

tyler80 Mon 30-May-11 19:03:16

How exactly do they adjust BMI based on your wrist measurement?

I have a feeling that I'd do even worse once they take your wrists into account - mine are 14cm.

My wrists and ankles are very bony but not particularly representative of my build if that makes any sense. e.g. my forearms must be bigger than average, because something like a shirt with 3/4 length sleeves are too tight just below the elbow.

TalkinPeace2 Mon 30-May-11 19:09:14

bigTillyMint Mon 30-May-11 19:37:40

6 foot, 10 stone 12 pounds. Size 12, sometimes 14. But size 10 in Next tall range. Shop sizing is not a reliable measure of actual size. I go by Bmi,mine is about 21/22.
I think how you look also depends on height, build, grooming, etc. Those so called "plus size" models, who are in reality never bigger than a 16/18 always look very slim to me.

slalomsuki Mon 27-Feb-12 09:27:44

BMI works for the average person but not somebody who has done a lot of exercise or sport either currently or in the past. For example Sir Steve Redgrave when he won his fifth gold medal was in the morbidly obese category accordingly to BMI calculations.

In my case I am overweight by at least 3 stone, am 5 foot 5 and still can get in to a size 16 because it's muscle in the main.

SwimmingThroughSickLullabies Mon 27-Feb-12 09:35:39

Ok I'm 13 Stone generally I'd still say I'm an hour glass because my waist is small. I'm a size 16-18 top and a size 16 bottom. My lower stomach is flabby and have huge boobs. I am definately overweigh and I'd say my dress size reflects that! Xx

MrsBeakman Mon 27-Feb-12 09:37:25

For me 9 stone = size 12
10 stone = size 14
11 stone = size 16
12 stone = size 18
I am 5 ft 4

Hi, we've moved this into Big/Slim/Whatever Weight Loss Club.

Bumblequeen Mon 27-Feb-12 12:15:24

5 ft 6.5
Size 12 in all clothes and outerwear
11st 10lb.

I think it is due to the way we are built. I have an athletic build, long limbs. I tend to appear taller and slimmer than I am. I have a small waist and a boyish figure (no hips!).

I need HELP. I am 5 foot 4. I weigh 10 stone 1 and I am a size six on top and a comfortable 8 on bottom sometimes a 10 depending and a six to an eight in a dress. I have no boobs. My stomach and legs are really muscly. I have started running 1 to 2 hours a day, and I KEEP GETTING HEAVIER IS THIS NORMAL? or is my weight ridiculous for my size. I really feel like I have bigs legs in comparison to my body as they feel really heavy all the time.. help... will they start to get smaller or just continue getting heavier?

jennysf Wed 27-Jun-12 11:37:25

hello. I need HELP. I WEIGH 10 STONE 1 pound and I am 5 foot 4. I am a SIZE 6 on top and a size 8 to ten on bottom. I have no boobs at all and I am muscle all over, legs, stomach and even my bottom. However on top I am so skinny and on bottom my legs feel so heavy all the time. I just run for 1 or 2 hours a 4 to 5 times a week because I enjoy it. I thought my legs would start getting smaller, they look like they are starting to tone up but I still think they look very bulky in comparison to my body because even though I am a size 8 MY LEGS ARE MOST DEFINITELY NOT SKINNY.. HELP I feel so heavy and out of proportion?

rubyrubyruby Wed 27-Jun-12 11:38:55

5ft 5"
9st 10ish
10 - sometimes 12 top if not stretchy.

Jennysf - you are a very small size for your weight/height. You are weighing more because you are toning up probably and increasing muscle. Distance running is great for losing weight but can make you very hungry! I would advise working on your upper body with weights/press-ups etc. By increasing the size of your upper body your proportions will improve. Forget about weight.

rubyrubyruby Wed 27-Jun-12 11:41:46

Also Jennysf - persevere with the longer runs. Look at the physique of distance runners compared to sprinters.

Anskabel Thu 22-Nov-12 21:44:48

5ft 5. Have been everything between 7st 12 - size 8 and 13st - size 16 over the past decade.

I should add that I found this thread because I typed in the search box something along the lines of: why am I always a larger dress size than other people my weight?

Ok, I'm big at the bust, have fairly wide hips (and a fairly large waist to match if I don't keep an eye on it) but what I can't comprehend was that even when I was at my largest - and I wasn't THAT large, BMI of 28 at the very most - I see women on TV programmes saying they're clinically obese to the extent they need stomach surgery who say that at my height they're a size 16??! Are they lying or is there another explanation?

scissors36 Wed 05-Jun-13 16:36:02

5ft 5ins and 12st 8lbs, in a 14/16 bottom and 12/14 top, feel really down as I exersise everyday but it doesn't seem to go!, mainly my arms & tummy. Tried diets & diet pills, anyone else the same? I was only 8st 6lbs 3 years ago & I don't eat any differently to then!

HoneyandRum Wed 05-Jun-13 17:31:27

I am 5ft 5
142 pounds (10 stone 2)
I don't live in the UK but am a 38 in Germany which says 12 in UK. At the moment I am 12 top and bottom.
I am a D cup which can be a pain getting things to fit right. I am gradually losing weight in fits and starts as I can be bothered to focus on it. A year and a half ago I was 22 pounds heavier.
3 years ago I wore a 42 which is two sizes bigger so 16? I am slowly hacking off the weight from my third pregnancy (almost 7 years ago! grin).

Somethingtothinkabout Wed 05-Jun-13 17:38:38

height: 5ft 4
weight: 8st 4
size: 8 (occasionally 10 now but not often enough for me to officially declare myself so. And I plan to run more.)

Yearofme Wed 05-Jun-13 17:42:37

9st 8 pounds
Size 8 or a small 10, some 10's swap me though.

People always make a shock face say I'm really heavy for my height and clothes size when i tell them what i weigh. I have no muscles so don't understand why I'm so heavy but wear a size 8? My boobs are 32D and still fit into size 8 tops, Im small boned as well! small shoulders and hips etc. I don't understand sad someone explain it to me please!

gaggiagirl Wed 05-Jun-13 17:46:24
