Probate Help - jointly owned assets, value of household and personal goods

Hi

I am going through the process of getting probate for my Dads estate. Basically the will states that everything goes to my Mum, they were married for decades. House in both their names etc

Has anyone done the valuation for household and personal goods without going through a company? Seeing as it all goes to my Mum it doesn't seem worth paying £100's.

There are no works of art or antiques, just the usual furniture and electronics, all several years old. Same with his personal items, usual clothes and watches that you could only give away.

Hi - I am going through a similar process and was told by the lawyers to look at the house insurance and the level of cover and that should give you an indication of value.

HTH.

I recently sorted out DMs house and an amount of £2000 was put down for all of furniture and personal effects, nothing valuable just general stuff, the solicitor said that was the nominal amount that would be used, no valuation was done of the stuff but that amount seemed a fair value to me. So I would see what would be a fair nominal sum to put down for probate

I was advised to think of the value the goods would be worth now if sold on eBay, car boot sale or freeads, rather the original cost or what it might cost to replace in an insurance claim. Eg a sofa set might be £1000 new, but one a few years old might only sell for £50 if you are lucky.

Hi

I'm sorry for your loss, in terms of probate, there is no IHT between spouses. Essentially, the value at this stage is largely irrelevant. Your mother will inherit your dads nil rate band of £325,000 when she passes away, then the value of the estate is more relevant.

Do feel free to PM me.
