DS is coming up to 2 and he loves the Gruffalo and Gruffalo's child, Pants, anything with lift up flaps, anything with lots of colourful animals in it. BIL recently bought him the Baby that Roared, which I can highly recommend. DS really enjoys roaring through it.

Duck in a Truck is fantastic.
Also agree with Julia Donaldson recommendations though our favourites at this stage were
Sharing a Shell
Squash and a Squeeze
Chocolate Moose for Greedy Goose

My 22mo loves
The Tiger Who Came to Tea
The Gruffalo
Dogger
The Baby's Catalogue
Mog books
Anything with animals in that he can name and we can talk about

He also loves the Argos catalogue and cookbooks!

My DD loves 'pants' and 'more pants' they would be great for a 2 year old boy too. They are rhyming books and a bit silly

poppy283 Wed 21-Nov-12 17:48:09

Petr Horacek books are rather popular here at the moment.

lurcherlover Wed 21-Nov-12 17:48:46

DS is two and the books he asks for every night without fail are Meg and Mog, We're Going On A Bear Hunt, any Spot book and Peepo.

Babybeargrylls Wed 21-Nov-12 17:49:13

Pirate Pete's Potty book when the time comes....

Oh god yes, bloody Spot. Anything with vehicles in. DS2 is particularly keen on Monkey Puzzle at the mo. Oh, and poems - both of my boys have loved poem books at this age, and I think poetry is brilliant for their language development. We've got an old 'Golden Treasury' kids' poetry compendium with lots of pictures, that I used to read as a child, and they both love it.

Monstersaurs, is good, my son loves Brown Bear Brown Bear and because it is so simple he enjoys reading it to himself.
Any Julia Donaldson book goes down well, one of his favourites is Tiddler. He is also enjoying some DrSeuss books, Cat in the Hat, Mr Brown, Green Eggs and Ham.

You choose, by pippa goodhart, loads and loads and loads to talk about to develop language, it's not a story really but has been much loved in our house for years.

LapinDeBois Wed 21-Nov-12 22:11:09

YY to You Choose. Our copy is falling apart because the boys love it so much. And YY to Brown Bear Brown Bear, too.

Usbourne first 1000 words has been a favourite here since DS (now 2.1) was given it for his first birthday, can see it continuing. It isn't a story, but provokes lots of conversation.

Also anything by Jez Alborough (of Duck in the Truck), and the Benedick Blathwayt (sp?) Little Red Engine and Dougal the Digger books.

tigersmummy Wed 21-Nov-12 23:02:57

Hairy Mclary series are absolutely brilliant

Kahu Thu 22-Nov-12 04:53:12

You Choose is wonderful at that age. My DS also loves Nick Sharatt's Shark In The Park.
Also Chocolate Mousse For Greedy Goose, Meg & Mog, Going On A Bear Hunt, Lucy Cousin's Hooray for Fish, A Train Goes Clickety Clack.
He is also getting quite into Topsy & Tim especially ones like going to the dentist or camping that he can relate to.

Just 2 ds likes Cops and Robbers by Janet and Allan Alberg

Liskey Thu 22-Nov-12 07:40:48

Who's in the loo - very appealing to a 2 year old's humour (or DH as well!)

totallynaive Thu 22-Nov-12 19:06:58

All the stuff above and perhaps Peepo, but also the fantastic Naughty Bus.

Smudge588 Thu 22-Nov-12 19:16:29

Any Julia Donaldson ones
Usbourne diggers

Marking place!

CecilyP Thu 22-Nov-12 20:05:10

Hairy Maclary from Donaldsons Dairy by Lynley Dodd. Don't know about 2 year olds, but I like them.

Get stuck by Oliver Jeffers. DS2 thinks it's absolutely hilarious and dissolves into fits of giggles.

(And he loves lost and found, up and down, how to catch a star and the way back home. He's a big Jeffers fan.)

ZenNudist Thu 22-Nov-12 20:43:24

Ds favourites:
Giraffes can't dance
Rumble in the jungle
Each peach pear plum
Peepo!
No bed without ted
Gruffalo

shoesontheglasslamp Thu 22-Nov-12 22:42:11

Usborne Noisy Monsters
That's Not My whatever, with added finding of the mouse on each page at great speed
Gruffalo (ad nauseum...)
Flap lifting books about vehicles - especially diggers!

I often find the library is good for 'trying out' books/types of books that I'm not sure he'll go for.

Moo Cow, Kung Fu Cow
Octopus Socktopus
Elephant Wellyphant
