My DD is not really saying anything yet. She says No, Mum, Mi Mi for milk, hi and park and I think she has said our dogs name once. Thats it and even those words not very often. She points to air planes and helicopters and shouts to draw my attention to them. She understands everything though and babbles and shouts loads. If I ask her to get her shoes, change mat, a toy or cup she will. Just wondered if there was anyone else out there who had a 20 month old not saying much and if I should be worried yet?

Have a 5 yo DS, who was also slow to speak and he is now being assessed for ASD however I don't see any other similarities in their behaviour at that age.

I wouldn't worry just yet. She can say five words (ok she thinks Mi Mi is a word).

It sounds like she understands a lot, which is good. My dd1 didn't say her first word until she was about 18 months - and certainly wasn't following simple instructions but that could have been due to a slight hearing problem.

My dd started saying single words around 18-24 months and after her second birthday sentences just exploded out of her. We couldn't believe it and I was worried just like you. I think she had a whole lot of vocab stored up and just wanted to get it right before she chose to use it. She's now 2.7 and holds great conversations and will try out all sorts of really big words. Try not to worry - your chatterbox is just around the corner.
