Is it possible for a 12 mo to say 100 + words?

My mil insists she spoke 100 words by the time she was 1. Is this remotely possible? Has anyone ever come across such a baby? Or is this just an example of her unreliability on development issues?

I really wouldn't have thought so, certainly not in my experience!

I would say your MIL is perhaps getting confused, they do, don't they?

She has no idea how many words she spoke at 12 months old, how can she possibly remember? She i9s relying on her memory of her mother's memory of her as a little girl .. ie, mostly fantasy!

DD was quite quick to pick up language. At 18 months she was using 7-8 word sentences and had a wide vocabulary, I can't remember how many now.

But she didn't have 100 words at 12 months

She says her father kept a diary in which he recorded the words she used. I thought maybe she meant that she had 100 words when she was 1, which could mean 23 months I suppose. But no, apparently she did mean before 1.

I suppose it's possible. I was just happy when my kids were saying one or two words by the time they were one.

my eldest was a very early & proficient talker - 12 word sentences as clear as day around 18 months however first word was at 9 months but I really don't think she had 100 by her first birthday more like 20 clear & understandable to everyone.

My DD has always been an exceptional speaker great fun cause she does it all day non stop without a breath.

By 18 months could have a full and good converstion with her but at 12 months she certainle never had 100+ words.

You are probably on the right track with the 100 words at 1 which like you say could be anything up to 23 months and she is the one that is picking it up or relaying the info wrong.

I'm fairly sure my dd2 knew about 100 words by the time she was 16 months - she's not an exceptional talker, but she is good. I remember counting all the words she knew, but most of them were only intelligible by me, and a lot of them were sounds with meaning, rather then clear words.
