Child psychology books

I'd like to read something quite general (ie not aligned to one specific school of thought such as attachment parenting etc) but also quite academic, although it'll need to be fairly introductory at the same time as I have no background in the subject - maybe something you might get in the first year of undergraduate study?

Any recommendations?
