help! 11 month old looking like he's about to open stairgates!

I think we are in deep trouble in meglet towers. My tall 11 month old DS has sussed where the stairgate latch is and is jiggling the stairgate at the top of stairs up and down. Its a mothercare one and only has a few millimetres clearance before he can open it. Not sure if its the mothercare brand thats crap or he's a whizz at copying me. The landing and his bedroom are the only truly safe areas in the house (no electrics, things to climb etc) so we're screwed if he can't crawl around up there when I'm upstairs.

Any suggestions. I thought of using elephant tape over the latch to buy us some time but think he'll just yank it off and eat it.

get a different stairgate. We had babydan ones, I think the white version is less than £15 you need to know how to do and have the strength - push the button down with your thumb and lift it up with the rest of your hand. My eldest dds were about 5 before they had the strength to do it and it baffled quite a few parents who came to visit too!
