DS1 aged 9 suddenly losing his confidence

DS1 is a popular boy but seems to have little confidence in some situations. He was amazed when his report said 'he is a popular member of the class'. I mentioned it in passing to his teacher who said of course he was popular because he had a nice group of friends and was friendly to everyone.
He now wants to give up his drama/dance/singing class. He has loved this but says now that they are working towards a performance he doesn't want to go anymore.
He is goalie for a local team and came home yesterday saying he didn't enjoy it because they lost 1-0 and he didn't like his friend seeing him let a goal in.
Is this normal 9 year old behaviour? I know as an adult I would hate to be on the stage but I thought DS1 would have a few years more before he was self concious.
PS He can be very confident in some situations, for example, asking the waiter in Frankie and Benny if it was worth upgrading to the more expensive kids meal cos 'don't you use the same size bases for all the pizzas? By the way they do!

Yes - mine is like that - very confident in some situations which I would be nervous in, but inexplicably losing confidence in social situations - the goalie thing is very similar to situations we have had.
I think they are just getting more used to dealing with the outside world and becoming more self-concious in their peer group - interraction with adults seem to be fine - like your situation with the waiter.

Thank you. Such a shame it happens so young but glad to know it is 'normal'.
