Behaviour/development

ds (14 months) mimics animals, modes of transport but never real human speech. Weird or normal?

His latest is copying the noise the bath water makes as it goes down the plug hole but he makes no attempt to copy words. Actually not true, he does say mummy, daddy and ta. Sick of NCT friends/competitors telling about their chatty children.

Its perfectly normal if my ds1 is anything to go by. Enjoy it while it lasts. DS1 now 2.6y and I spent all yesterday looking for the volume control to shut out his constant broken record chunnering.
DS2 can take as long as he wants to learn to talk.

Normal

Ignore other parents

He'll get there when he's ready.

Normal. DS2 sang before he spoke, too.

At 14m DS1 could make all the animal noises in response to pictures of animals etc, but didn't say words.
But his first proper word at 16 m, when he came home from a couple of nights at grandma's to find his little brother had arrived, was a very clear 'BABY!!'. How many other people have such a wonderful memory of a childs first word, it was sooo worth waiting for. (I still complain now that he won't shut up though).

Ds only seems to make the animal noises etc in response to real animals rather than pictures. When we pull into the car park where we go to feed ducks he quacks tho - cute eh? Like your ds, Little Lapin, he seems to have his own sounds for things. And he is considerably better looking than the genius NCT child

normal I'd say.

Ds didn't really start picking up words beyond animal noises or transport noises till after 18 months (I think). His talking didn't really take off until well after he turned 2.

HE is now 2.8 and quite advanced speech wise.

IME it comes in fits and starts.

completely normal and in fact very good
fact that he is copying noises means he is really trying to communicate. he will probably speak early and never shut up thereafter

Hurrah! Glad he's normal and expect other mothers probably exaggerate their children's abilities. Was impressed with him earlier when I asked him to bring a story (usually met with a quizzical look) and he trotted off and came back with a book. Needless to say ds received an enormous round of applause
