I attended a session last week for my DT2 aged nearly 6 with a SALT and OT becasue of Dt2's concentration problems. he has problems listening and following instructions as well as focusing on tasks. They concluded that he needed to be seen by a physio as his gross motor movements were a bit awkward and he was propping himself up in the chair a bit as well as having difficulty sitting still and also standing on one foot although he can hop.He was ok with the running and jumping and he can ride his bike without stablisers. he was also ok with things like put your finger on your nose. They said that the fact that he was having some difficulty with his movements (although not significant they said) a large part of his brain was being used to work on this and not enough to do things like process instructions . the Salt said he came out a bit behind with his receptive speech (well she didnt say receptive but I gathered thats what she meant. I said I didnt think he had a language processing problem as such and that it was more of an attention issue and she agreed and seemed to think some physio and OT would help. He seemed to do quite weel on the tasks but a few times he didnt manage to pick up all elements of the requests. However when I did the ones that he didnt do so well on at home he did fine.
I was just wondering if you had come across instances like this. I suppose I am a bit confused as to what could be an actual language processing problem as opposed to having something that causes one or maybe there isnt really a difference. His expressive speech is good she said.Hope this makes sense

Hi,
I'm a SALT.
Think I understand what you are asking, it seems that your DT2 has difficulties with attention and listening from what you have said, so longer instructions are harder to remember and so bits often get missed out.
when a SALT does an assessment it is in 'perfect' conditions, so as long aas the child co-operates well, then the result will be a true reflection of abilities. are you sure that you mimicked exactly what the salt did and didn't give any extra clues, such as pointing with your eyes, or repeating too many times? havben't heard 'receptive speech' as a term, but 'receptive language' means understanding. did i answer enough? happy to carry on if you like.

Thanks. No I didnt have to repeat nor did i give any other clues(i think). the ones I repeated at home were the ones he did at the beginning when i think he was a bit distracted by his new surroundings and people. However he was co-operative throughout and the ones that he didnt do so well on later on I was ok with. The SALT said that sometimes children with Motor problems come across as having language processing diffs when in fact the root cause is the motor issue and was wondering if any other SALts had experience of this. Thanks again
