foods at 9 months...

OK, so I really should know this, so sorry, but I can't find any non-contradictory advice anywhere else on the internet about foods for a 9 month old...he's pretty good with most things so far, though currently making a fuss about anything on a spoon, and wanting to feed himself, even though he can't really do it yet...so i'm trying to come up with things I can spread on bread (which he loves) so as to make it more nutritious. Are cream cheeses, hummous, marmite, pates OK at this age?

Also, I still can't persuade him to take any water from a cup...I've been offering it at each mealtime for about 3 months now, hoping that he'll get used to it at some point, but he just isn't interested. He still takes his milk from a bottle first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and for a mid morn and mid afternoon snack (which means that he gets the full pint of formula which the doctor's recommended)- any other top tips as to how to encourage cup-drinking? or taking in water in any other form? I did a couple of times relent and add a tiny bit of fruit juice, but that didn't make him any more interested in it either.

Any advice would be gratefully received!

My ds is 9 months and my third child. My dd's both ate well and i'm finding it very hard to feed ds.
He doesn't like ANY mush so i'm having to do finger food. I've offered jerseys, broccoli, peas(i take the skin off though i think i'm obsessive) , toast with a tiny bit of butter on. I've offered lots more but these things he's liked.
I'd be very wary of pate to be honest though i'm not sure why.

You could try pasta. You can add loads of different things to it such as steamed veg with cheese sauce, tomato sauce, tuna etc., TBH I just give ds whatever we are having and just put a small quantity of food on the table for him. FWIW I do give ds a small scrapping of marmite on toast but he is nearly 12 months. As for the cup - you could try a different one but he will probably just get used to drinking from one in time. HTH

oh, omlette and scrambled egg are also good ones. You can mix in vegies, cheese, ham etc.,

My ds is drinking water from a small avent bottle. Depends what you're concerned about. Him getting the water of using a cup. Personally i don't fret about them learning too early.

that's great...thank you...so I guess if I try those big bits of pasta dipped in sauces, then he can hold them himself... and big lumps of omelette etc.... and I guess I'll just persevere with the cup...the ones he's got closest to drinking from are either the doidy cups or the tommee tippee ones, but he tends just to play with them, since he finds the water shaking about in them utterly hilarious!

cheers, angeliz... i'm sure you're right about water, too...it's far more important he doesn't get dehydrated, especially with hot weather round the corner (in my dreams :-)) than any cup expertise...

Pate is one of very few foods that aren't recommended to give a baby until at least 1 year, I think because of the listeria risk. Do check out Aitch's blog on www.babyledweaning.com - there are lots of us who have had self feeding babies with no spoons from much younger than your ds, so you should be able to get some ideas there.
