Odd question for the parents of boys.

How old was your son when he got an erection?

I took ds2 for his eight month check today and she asked if I had any concerns. I said I was concerned because ds2 hadn't had an erection yet. She looked stunned and said that boys didn't get them until around age seven. So I explained to her that ds1 had been getting them from day one even when he was still in hospital after birth. I just thought it was normal. He get's about one a day, sometimes more frequently. Ds1 is five now and aggressive all the time. Dh laughed and said I was being stupid when I wondered if maybe his hormones were making him cranky. I've always said it's like having a teenager.

Any thoughts?

Only had one baby boy but he's had them from being a tiny baby. He often gets one when he needs a wee but other times too. My ds is 5 now and also aggressive - not to other people but in his play.

I have an almost 6 year old and a 3 year old. They have both had erections from early on. Mainly when waking (typical men!) and when they play with it (when they were babies and i was changing their nappies). Am sure it is common as have spoken to other mums of boys about this.

Always remember my ds and his friend going for a wee together and the conversation they were having "oh look, my willy's gone all big!", etc.

So why doesn't my eight month old get one?

My boys get them when they urinate, at random moments too, always have, never even thought about it, its normal. They don't even notice anymore.

I've never noticed DS having any and he's nearly 2. Could there be something wrong?

I'm worried that there might be something wrong with ds2 and he's only eight months. Any mums of baby boys have any thoughts?

I have an 11-mo old, and I haven't seen him have very many when I change him, but when he does, I have to get a diaper on him quickly, because a wee is coming.

ridiculous! I remember easily ds getting a stiff penis upon his early morning nappy change, let alone other times when I am sure it happened this was before he could talk, so def before 9 mths.
Now aged 10 he won't declare ....
It is true however that some boys have a higher amount of testosterone though!
Lucky you Flip LOL

But seriously, do ask for further info from at least a GP, bloody HV's I am assuming it was one of those that gave you this pearl of wisdom
FFs this is your ds 2, you know about what to expect....
I do not expect it is a massive problem but you noticed, so you should be treated with respect and your concerns checked out..
Sorry did not mean to be so.. well flippant in my last post..

You probably just haven't seen one while it's been happening Flip. If I have to change ds2 in the night I can be pretty much guaranteed that he will have one. If you are worried could you sneak a peek then?

My three boys have all been a little different here. DS1 has had very prominent stiffies from as early as I can remember (he's now 4 and has them ALL the time). DS2 never seemed to have them until he was around six months, and I've only ever noticed 2(ish) in DS3 who is now 8 months old. If you are worried about it then I would go and see your GP but I'm sure it's normal. Always something to worry about with kids isn't there...

I'm not worried as such, just curious to know what the norm is after the HV was so shocked about ds1. I have never been piddled on by ds2 so maybe that's why I haven't seen one. Also ds1 is very well endowed in that department. Amazingly so according to my dh. He seems to spend a lot of time gripping his willie or playing with it. I've even seen white secretions on his undies.

Flip - do you really think there can be a 'norm' with something like the male appendage?

Report
suzywong · 23/07/2004 21:40

Agree with Lou33
DS1 3yrs has them quite often but I've never seen DS2, 10 months with one, maybe he is just more discreet that DS1.

Your HV is deluded

Piffleoffagus · 23/07/2004 21:56

bloody dh's
when I mention anything about ds's appendage and it's habits he always mentions that in 2 yrs time he'll be off playing with it all the time, serious fashion like... (ie ds not dh - slight irony there but I'll not share that here LOL)
Honestly... amazing men think they can run countries and empires...

coppertop · 23/07/2004 21:57

Both ds's have had them for as long as I can remember (on and off, I mean! Not constantly. )
It's usually when they've been 'playing' or when they need a wee. Perfectly natural I would have thought.

Ds1 was trying to wee the other day , and couldn't do one,. All the holding was starting to make it grow a bit. He said to me, "mummy, my googoo has got a bone growing in it, but it's squidgy" . He's 5.

I exited the bathroom and had a quick guffaw about it with dh.

Both ds1 and 2 have had erections pretty much daily, usually as the result of fiddling, or straining for a wee or poo. I think they both discovered their bits at an early age and clearly like the feeling of touching it! ds2 giggles when he gets an erection. Flip, does your ds2 play with his bits? Maybe he hasnt discovered them in that way yet. Cant believe I'm typing about this!!
