How much does your 3.5 - 4 month old sleep?

Hi,

my DS is 4 months old and seems to sleep a lot (alot more than his brother did at the same age!)!

He was born 3.5 weeks early, so I guess he is really only 3.5 months old, but how much should he be sleeping?

He sleeps extra well in his Ergo / Baby Bjorn and in his pushchair too. Is this normal?

Well today so far:

He went to bed about 8pm last night and woke for a feed at 2.30am.

He woke again at 6.30am.

He was awake on and off till 9.30 when we went out, and slept till 12.45.

He was awake for two hours and has just fallen asleep again now.

I'll let you know what he does between now and when he goes to bed finally tonight....

Thx

That sounds ok to me, all babies are different and if the baby seems happy i shouldn't worry

Sounds pretty normal to me, just looked at my ds sleep diary from this age (yes I was that anal)

Couldn't go much longer than an hour and a half (sometimes less) awake without needing a nap, so

wake at 5.30 for feed, then back to sleep
Wake for day at 7 ish
Nap at 8.30 ish
wake at 11
nap at 1 ish
wake at 2 ish
Nap at 3.30 ish
Wake at 5
Bed for night at 6.30
Woke during night a couple of times for feed but demand fed so didn't record how often boob got shoved in gob

So all in all about 17 hrs asleep in every 24. And of course the above is an "ish" some days it was less sometimes I remember he would have loadsanaps and I would think that there was something wrong with him!

Wow that seems a lot now I think about it but at the time I didn't think he was a particularly sleepy baby.

Ans always dropped off in babybjorn/ pushchair.

The first nap of the day was great, I would wake at 7 with him then get to go back to bed at 8.30 which I'm sure is what kept me sane

Wow what a long post sorry its all me me me ds ds ds too soz if not a huge help

Thx, it is reassuring. He did have his second five in one a few days ago so maybe that's affected him.

He slept for 1/2 hr from 2.45 to 3.15ish but has been awake since then.

Maybe he is just more of a morning sleeper...DS1 was very much an afternoon sleeper!

Might keep a "diary" for a couple of days, maybe he actually sleeps less than I think he does!

Hello, sorry for v brief post earlier, just figured what might seem a lot to you might not be very much to someone else...

Tatat, I started a sleep AND food diary too (anal also!). Started it after five months though when he was beginning weaning to see if food made a difference to sleep etc.

So anyway, cant even find the diary but seem to remember he would wake about 6:30ish, go back to bed about 8:30ish, wake 10ish, go back to bed 12ish, wake 2ish, and then would have a 30ish min nap during the afternoon while out and about. He would be in bed about 6:30ish but often not asleep until 7:30ish (grrr) (and wake anything from nothing to four times in night!).

If we went to someone's house I would often put him in baby bjorn to get him to sleep as he hated sleeping in strange bedrooms!

Think your LO sounds normal to me.

Hi,

After reading your sleep diary, i thought i would add mine!!

Altho i tried following the baby whisperer routine, i have a good bedtime routine but we are still abit all over the place during the day, altho its a breakthro that she'll go off to sleep on her own instead of on my breast or being rocked!!

7am awake
feeds, washed and dressed
8.15 sleeps from 40 mins to 1 hour
9am wake
10.30nap
11.30awake
12,30 nap
afternoons are allover the place usually awake an hour sleep for an hour, and feed every 2 hours, but i don't mind this as the nights hav been easier since i started this.

5.30 awake
7.30 bath breas and bed
usully goes till 1am but sometimes has a feed at 11pm

semiawake at 2.30 and is v unsettled thrashing about throwing head about,
can last from 5mins to 2 hours!!

5.30 feeds then back to sleep

Any ideas on how i can get her to hav a longer nap in the afternoon instead of cat napping for half hour would greatly appreciated.

any1 else suffering from lack of sleep!!!

Well, after sleeping most of the morning, DS only slept from 2:45-3:15, then for 15 minutes around 6pm.

I put him to bed finally at 7.30pm.

I am going to keep a diary again for the next few days, and speak to the hv on Friday.

Thx for your experiences and advice,

My 4 month old has the following routine...

wakes at 6am for Breastfeed.
Sleeps again until about 9/10am. May have another feed then.

Awake then until lunch.
Bottle at 1ish and another sleep (about an hour)

Then awake most of the afternoon, but may have another sleep about 4ish.

BFeed at 6pm, bath at 7, down at 7.30pm.
Usually sleeps through till she is woken for a bottle at about 10pm, and then sleeps through the night.

Rarrie you lucky thing!!!

yOU SAID YOU GIVE A BOTTLE AT 1, IS THIS FORMULA?

IF SO HAS IT HELPED TO FILL HER UP?

IM CONSIDERING MIXIN BOTH AS MY THREE MONTH OLD FEEDS EVERY 2HALF HOURS DURING THE DAY AND HAS 3 NIGHTFEEDS.

I DID TRY A BOTTLE OF FORMULA AT BEDTIME BUT SHE ONLY WOULD TAKE 2OZ, SO IT DIDN'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE.

JUST WONDERED IF THE BOTTLE HAS HELPED HER GO THRO THE NIGHT??

hi! Ye3s it is formula and it gives her an extra hour. But doesn't make that much of a difference. To get her sleeping thru I did the baby whisperer and both my girls were sleeping thru by 8 weeks.

Thank you Rarrie, i too have followed the baby whisperer and had great results during the day, but even tho i do the same when she wakes at night, she doesn't go off without a feed.

How did you manage to stop them wanting feeds during the night??

i try and feed every 2 hours during the day to fill her up, but shes still waking up 2-3 times per night for feeds!
