Hi everyone- I've been giving my 6 mo DD finger foods (baby led) and a bit of purée (which she holds her own spoon) for about 2 weeks now- I'm not sure she's swallowing any of it! She gags on things - is that normal?!

When do you think she will start doing swallowing stuff? I'm not in any rush but Im wondering when to start making her meals and things!

Thanks xxx

Yes gagging is normal and an important part of learning to swallow. It varies so much from baby to baby how quickly they take to food, i think you just have to let them find their own way. It doesn't matter at that age if the food is actually getting into their stomach as they get their nutrition from milk, it's all about learning how to eat.

When DS first started to really start swallowing food I found it easiest to make baby-friendly food for me and DH and just keep a little portion for DS to have the next day...much less waste that way if they decide they're not going to eat it!

Yes it is definitely an exciting and fun time...but trust me the novelty of finding 3 baby-friendly meals a day soon wears off!! Grin

Are you seeing any come out in her poo or have her poos changed? I have an 8mo DS and I know he is a good eater because his poos look like adult poos!

How I miss those delicious, milky little poos Grin

Some small changes in poo- like I know she had a bit of banana cos she had those black bits in it! Also she's been going every other day a couple of times when normally she's once a day. Also it's slightly wetter? But I didn't expect that. Ha ha a lot of poo analysis there!

Can just sucking the food create changes like that?!

Gagging very normal. I just used the ellas pouches or other brands for a while at lunch then a puréed home made dinner to get food into them, just kept trying them on finger foods every week until they eventually were old enough not to gag then introduced them properly. Think it was between 8-9 months my boys stopped gagging or being sick. But I'm sure all kids are different.
