My baby is a whopper

She's just 4 months and weighs 8 kilos already. She was just over four kilos at birth and has always been in the 97th centile for height, but still 8 kilos seems massive to me.

She's been formula fed since my milk dried up when she was 8 weeks, and takes five bottles of 210ml a day.

Is this something to be worried about or should I just be glad she seems healthy? I am very tall myself, and I've always been big, although not actually overweight, and her dad tells me he was a right little porker until he started crawling and he's been a rake ever since.

People are always surprised that she's only 4 months. Apparently, she looks around 6. Hmm

Also, if any of you have tales of your massive babies turning into slim and healthy children, that would be reassuring. Wink

I wouldn't worry. Both my dds have been/ are big. 5 year old (just finished reception) is one of the tallest in her class and is taller than a lot of the year 1s and many of the year 2s. Dd2 appears to be heading the same way- 10 months and only just fits in most of the 12-18 month clothes we've got. She was 98th centile for weight and height at her last health review.

Both mine are/were breastfed so no idea how much milk being consumed so can't help with the amounts of formula that is expected at 4 months-sorry.

My dd was a massive chunk. Everyone said as soon as she started moving, she would slim down, and surprise surprise, she did.

My son is huge, but very tall with it. He is 13 months and has been in 12-18 month clothes since about 8 months. He's just going in to 18-24 month clothes. I have no doubt at all that he will slim down as soon as he starts walking (and stops eating me out of house and home)

I know how hard it is. I worried a lot about dd, and the amount of milk she was supposed to have. In retrospect I should have just relaxed, and accepted her for what she was, a cuddly chunky baby who I didn't have to worry as much about when she got Ill and went off her food Grin

Both mine were big babies. She was a bit older than yours but Dc2 at one point was getting through 20oz milk just in the evenings. And she was having 3 meals and 3 bottles in the day. Dc1 was on 6 9oz bottles a day before I weaned him-sometimes 7. He slimmed right down when he started moving. Now he's tall and skinny. Still waiting for dc2 to start moving properly but she will loose it too. I wouldn't worry.

My ds is almost ten months and not quite 8kg .... But there's a huge range of normal at this age.
Is she following her growth curve?
Is you doc happy with her growth?
Of yes to both then there's unlikely to be anything to worry about.

Thank you, lovelies, that is reassuring. She takes 6 - 9 months clothes already for some stuff.

She does seem quite happy and contented generally though.

If you and her dad are tall then it's even more likely it's fine. :)

Fom, we've been on holidays so missed her four-monthly check-up, and the doc won't get to see her again now until the end of the month. They are a bit Shock at her weight, but we live in France so people are generally smaller and lighter than us northerners here anyway. And more neurotic about weight.

At 7 wks my DS was having 7 oz (200ml) every 3 hrs (usually 6 feeds in 24 hrs). He weighed 7.6 kilos at almost 4 mths. At birth was just under the 99th centile for height but just under the 75th for weight and head circumference.
At 18 mths he was on the 99th centile for head circumference and just below it for height and weight.
At 3 yrs he was just below the 98th centile for height and weight. He never seemed chubby or over weight - hes always been tall though and outgrew his clothes quickly.

My oldest nephew was 9lb 2 born and just grew and grew- he was 11.5kg by 7 months, was wearing 12-18 month clothes for length at the time and now he's 5 years and 9 months he's 132cm tall with size 2 feet and will need age 8-9 years school trousers for September, even though he's still able to do up a size 6-7 years coat.

If he's happy and healthy and he is more or less the same percentile on the charts then I wouldn't worry too much.

Ahhhh.... France... Righto... yeah they're v neurotic. My friend got weighed constantly there during pregnancy and nagged. She's not even big!

If she's following her curve and on the charts it's unlikely anything is wrong. Ds is at the other end, low on the charts but as long as he keeps on the curve we are ok. Once he dropped off altogether and then we had to intervene (early solids) until he was back on. I of course feel immensely guilty (I had hyperemesis and he has always been small..)

My DD is 13 months and the size of a 3 year old, in 3-4 clothes too!! Nothing wrong with her just very tall , she was a little chunk until she started moving about. As long as the centiles are near enough the same I wouldn't worry Smile

I had big babies. Number 1 always followed the ninety something for weight and was off the chart for height until 2.5. She is now 3.9, 99.6 for height and around the 75th for weight. Perfect if I do say so myself!!

DS is hanging around the 98th for weight and height and he is just over 12 months. I expect he will end up much the same as her.

She sounds perfect especially if she's roughly tracking her line. Definitely don't worry.

DS1 was huge at birth. He's a perfectly normal, gangly 13 year old now.
