At what age should they be able to climb/do steps

Ds is 17 months on the fourth.

He has been walking now for about 3 weeks.

If he falls over he can't stand up again and has to be either picked up back on to his feet or he finds something to pull himself up with.

He also can't do steps at all. Even a small little step in our kitchen. Even crawling on or off it.

Climbing is something else he can't do either. He is desperate to get on the chairs but he just can't do it.

I know it's a good thing safety wise but surely he should be able to do this by now?

Is he wearing shoes or slippers in the house? If he is, get them off. Bare feet really help them.

It doesn't sound worrying to me. He's only just learned to walk...some learn sooner and so by 17 or 18 months are more confident walkers....but your DS has only just learned so he's not there yet.

Hold his hand and help him practice up the kitchen step and down...make it into a game. Counting or saying a rhyme or song so he doesn't know he's "working".

My DS didn't walk til 17 months either and sounds a lot like yours. He learnt how to stand up from sitting about a month after starting to walk and only crawled after that (including up stairs!!) He was a bum shuffler rather than a crawler which I think was part of the delay.

Just had his 27mo check and his gross motor is still slightly behind normal (still can't jump) but nothing that worried the HV.

No shoes in the house. Totally bare foot. Only shoes outside.

I jinxed myself slightly. Within minutes of posting this, he has figured out the tiny step into the kitchen.

Still can't stand up from falling down though.

I'm not concerned but thank you for the reassurances
